All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name by Lyn Robbins Names are important. If you have a good name, if you have done important and special things, if you are great, then the mention of your name brings immediate comment and praise. We all know name droppers, and to tell the truth we all have been known to drop names once in a while. When people find out that you were friends in your hometown with that singer who has become a star, you stick your chest out and recall the good times you had together. When Phantom of the Opera comes to town, you proudly tell that you were in school with the actor now playing the Phantom s understudy. Or last weekend, when you were reading the sports page and saw the story about the latest pitching performance of a certain high school standout, you were likely to tell someone sitting around you how well you knew him. Some of us have had the honor to know composers whose pieces we sing in choirs or congregations. From now on, whenever many of us sing a piece or a hymn written by somebody we knew well or barely met once, we will whisper to the person in front of us or elbow the person next to us and point to the composer s name on the page and say, I knew him... He was my friend. There is another name. In fact, there is no other name but one. I wonder how often we, when the conversation turns to things spiritual, are quick to point to the name of Jesus and say, I know Him... He s my friend. We, who are quick to drop names, often may never really hail the power of the name of the almighty creator of the universe. While the angels themselves fall prostrate before Him, we, who are saved by His grace, are shy about His name. We are the chosen seed. We are ransomed from the fall. Why should we wait until we get to heaven, in that yonder, sacred time, to fall at His feet and join the everlasting song? Hail that name. If we can proudly point out that we know the name of a good athlete or a great composer, surely we can ascribe all majesty to the Lord of all. Let us all hail the power of Jesus name. See you Sunday, singing God s song, Parke
