This week boys and girls, we continue with part 3 in our lesson entitle, At Capernaum of our study book Desire of Ages! Mark 1:25 (KJV) And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. Mark 1:26 (KJV) And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. Mark 1:27 (KJV) And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine [is] this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mark 1:28 (KJV) And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee. Luke 4:36 (KJV) And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word [is] this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. Luke 4:37(KJV) And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. Romans 6:13 (KJV) Neither yield ye your members [as] instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members [as] instruments of righteousness unto God. Let s continue in our book Desire of Ages, Chapter #26, page 255-256 All was now confusion and alarm. The attention of the people was diverted from Christ, and His words were unheeded. This was Satan's purpose in leading his victim to the synagogue. But Jesus rebuked the demon, saying, "Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not." {DA 255.3} The mind of this wretched sufferer had been darkened by Satan, but in the Saviour's presence a ray of light had pierced the gloom. He was roused to long for freedom from Satan's control; but the demon resisted the power of Christ. When the man tried to appeal to Jesus for help, the evil spirit put words into his mouth, and he cried out in an agony of fear. The demoniac partially comprehended that he was in the presence of One who could set him free; but when he tried to come within reach of that mighty hand, another's will held him, another's words found utterance through him. The conflict between the power of Satan and his own desire for freedom was terrible. {DA 255.4} Question: What was Satan s purpose in leading his victim to the synagogue? And, what happen when the man tried to appeal to Jesus for help? Answer: To cause confusion and alarm, diverted the attention of the people from Christ, and His words were unheeded. And, the evil spirit put words into his mouth, and he cried out in an agony of fear. He who had conquered Satan in the wilderness of temptation was again brought face to face with His enemy. The demon exerted all his power to retain control of his victim. To lose ground here would be to give Jesus a victory. It seemed that the tortured man must lose his life in the struggle with the foe that had been the ruin of his manhood. But the Saviour spoke with authority, and set the captive free. The man who had been possessed stood before the wondering people happy in the freedom of self-possession. Even the demon had testified to the divine power of the Saviour. {DA 256.1} The man praised God for his deliverance. The eye that had so lately glared with the fire of insanity, now beamed with intelligence, and overflowed with grateful tears. The people were dumb with amazement. As soon as they recovered speech they exclaimed, one to another, "What thing is this? What new doctrine [is] this? For with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mark 1:27, margin. {DA 256.2} Question: How did the Saviour speak to the tortured man to set him free? And, what was the condition of the man after being delivered? Answer: With authority, the man who had been possessed stood before the wondering people happy in the freedom of self-possession. And, the man praised God for his deliverance. The eye that had so lately glared with the fire of insanity, now beamed with intelligence, and overflowed with grateful tears. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#123 (4.18.15) Page 2

Song: Let s learn a scripture song together dear ones, from the book of Hebrew! Hebrew 7:25 (KJV) Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. The secret cause of the affliction that had made this man a fearful spectacle to his friends and a burden to himself was in his own life. He had been fascinated by the pleasures of sin, and had thought to make life a grand carnival. He did not dream of becoming a terror to the world and the reproach of his family. He thought his time could be spent in innocent folly. But once in the downward path, his feet rapidly descended. Intemperance and frivolity perverted the noble attributes of his nature, and Satan took absolute control of him. {DA 256.3} Question: What was the secret cause of this man s affliction which caused him to become a fearful spectacle? And, what two evils perverted the noble attributes of his nature? Answer: It was in his own life; he had been fascinated by the pleasures of sin, and had thought to make life a grand carnival. And, intemperance and frivolity and control by them Satan took absolute control of him. Song: Let s learn another scripture song together dear ones, from the book of Psalms! Psalms 119:9-16 (KJV) Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed [thereto] according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed [art] thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as [much as] in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#123 (4.18.15) Page 3

Remorse came too late. When he would have sacrificed wealth and pleasure to regain his lost manhood, he had become helpless in the grasp of the evil one. He had placed himself on the enemy's ground, and Satan had taken possession of all his faculties. The tempter had allured him with many charming presentations; but when once the wretched man was in his power, the fiend became relentless in his cruelty, and terrible in his angry visitations. So it will be with all who yield to evil; the fascinating pleasure of their early career ends in the darkness of despair or the madness of a ruined soul. {DA 256.4} Question: Why did his remorse came too late? And, where did that place him after? Answer: When he would have sacrificed wealth and pleasure to regain his lost manhood, he had become helpless in the grasp of the evil one. And, He had placed himself on the enemy's ground, and Satan had taken possession of all his faculties. The same evil spirit that tempted Christ in the wilderness, and that possessed the maniac of Capernaum, controlled the unbelieving Jews. But with them he assumed an air of piety, seeking to deceive them as to their motives in rejecting the Saviour. Their condition was more hopeless than that of the demoniac, for they felt no need of Christ and were therefore held fast under the power of Satan. {DA 256.5} Question: Did the same evil spirit that tempted Christ in the wilderness, possess the maniac of Capernaum? And, whose condition was more hopeless than that of the demoniac? Answer: Yes! They controlled the unbelieving Jews as well. And, the Jews, for they felt no need of Christ and were therefore held fast under the power of Satan. Song: Let s learn a our last scripture song together dear ones, from the book of Psalms! Psalms 143:9-11 (KJV) Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me. Teach me to do thy will; for thou [art] my God: thy spirit [is] good; lead me into the land of uprightness. Quicken me, O LORD, for thy name's sake: for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#123 (4.18.15) Page 4

Gather the little ones together! It s Story Time! Our book selection this Sabbath is entitle, Sons and Daughters of God Chapter 2- The Law of God is Perfect Narrated by our dear Brother Graves! The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. Psalm 19:7. {SD 39.1} The laws which God gave His ancient people were wiser, better, and more humane than those of the most civilized nations of the earth. The laws of the nations bear marks of the infirmities and passions of the unrenewed heart; but God's law bears the stamp of the divine. {SD 39.2} Says the psalmist, "The law of the Lord is perfect." How wonderful in its simplicity, its comprehensiveness and perfection, is the law of Jehovah! It is so brief that we can easily commit every precept to memory, and yet so far-reaching as to express the whole will of God, and to take cognizance not only of the outward actions, but of the thoughts and intents, the desires and emotions, of the heart. Human laws can not do this. They can deal with the outward actions only. A man may be a transgressor, and yet conceal his misdeeds from human eyes; he may be a criminal,--a thief, a murderer, or an adulterer,-- but so long as he is not discovered, the law can not condemn him as guilty.... {SD 39.3} The law of God is simple, and easily understood. If the children of men would, to the best of their ability, obey this law, they would gain strength of mind and power of discernment to comprehend still more of God's purposes and plans. And this advancement would be continued, not only during the present life, but during eternal ages; for however far he may advance in the knowledge of God's wisdom and power, there is always an infinity beyond. {SD 39.4} Since "the law of the Lord is perfect," every variation from it must be evil. {SD 39.5} Obedience was the only condition upon which ancient Israel was to receive the fulfilment of the promises that made them the highly favored people of God; and obedience to that law will bring as great blessings to individuals and nations now as it would have brought to the Hebrews. {SD 39.6} Next Week We will continue with part 4 of our lesson entitle, At Capernaum in our study book Desire of Ages Closing Prayer request one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer.
