6 PAGE 6 Unless a Grain of Wheat Dies As we approach Holy Week, the readings this Sunday invite us to recognise that, in his self-giving love for his Father and for us, Jesus longs to draw us closer to himself. It is only through Jesus submission to an undeserved death that we now have the benefit of faith and salvation. The first reading speaks of God s love that heals and forgives our sinfulness, so that we can know Him through the power of His Spirit dwelling in our hearts. The second reading reminds us that the way of Jesus is one of love and obedience. The gospel highlights for us the kind of death Jesus was to die. John tells us that Jesus soul was troubled as his fateful hour approached in which he was to give all, like a wheat grain which falls on the ground and dies. We are therefore called to express our gratitude by following Jesus all the time in our daily lives even unto death. If Jesus invites us to share this fate with him wherever I am, my servant will be there too he also helps us to trust in his Father, as we face the ordeals of our personal lives. I suppose his prayer is heard through the sufferings or challenges we encounter in the destructiveness and darkness of our world. In the words of the letter to the Hebrews, through his suffering and death, Jesus is made perfect or as John puts it in the gospel, he is glorified. This means that having emptied himself to become one with us, the humanity he shares with us is now filled with divine greatness and the grain which falls to the ground yields a rich harvest, transforming the whole of creation. Therefore, the outcome is certain and beyond all humanity s imagining. It is the inauguration of the new covenant written in our hearts, foretold by Jeremiah, and sealed with the Saviour s blood. The Crucified One will become a source of eternal salvation for all who become his followers. Having been lifted up from the earth, he will draw all of us to himself so that we may share in his new existence. May we pray for the grace to see Jesus more clearly, love Him more dearly and follow Him more closely so that we can merit a share in the generosity of our God which is everlasting happiness.
