Week of June 6, 2010 Lessons for the Leader Does God care for you or the preschoolers in your ministry? How does God show He cares? Read Genesis 6:9-10. Who was righteous and blameless among his peers? Can the same be said about you? Read Ephesians 1:4. Who is called to be holy and blameless before God? Read Genesis 6:14-22. Notice all the details given to Noah. What would have happened if Noah had decided to build the ark his way and not according to God's details? A catastrophe involving his family and all of the animals could have occurred. What happens when we do not heed God's details for our lives? Noah was spared because he chose to follow God's directions. Read Genesis 7:1,13-19. Have you ever been in a flood or seen flooded areas on TV? The loss is often devastating. Imagine everything destroyed except for the ark and its contents. Read Genesis 8:1-3,13-20. How long exactly were Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark? Over one year! It took only 40 days of rain to fill the earth but many months for the water to recede and the land to dry. Does this sound like a lesson in patience and obeying God's command? Have you ever been stuck somewhere and your patience runs short? How is your patience with preschoolers? What did Noah do after leaving the ark? Noah built an altar. God had kept His promise not to hurt Noah. Noah worshiped God. Have you worshiped God today? Are you ready to lead preschoolers in worship? Read Genesis 9:12-16. What kind of sign did God give Noah? God made another covenant with Noah. What was this covenant? Remember each time you look at a rainbow that God cares for and helps people. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Large Group Only Format: Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. Cut apart the pictures. Give each child a picture. Ensure at least two copies of each picture are used. Instruct: "Make the sound of the animal on your picture. Listen to other children and see if you can hear someone making the same sound as you. When you find that person, stand side by side until everyone finds his matching animal." Collect the pictures, redistribute, and repeat the activity. Collect the pictures and conclude: "Our Bible story today will help us learn more about how God takes care of animals and people." Raise your hand if you can name a way the item shows God helps us." Invite one child at a time to select and present an item. Guide the children to comment. For example, God gives us food to eat, houses to live in, and clothes to wear. Pray, thanking God for helping us. 8 Explore the Bible (5 minutes) Print Genesis from "Bible Books" (CD). Display and read aloud title. Lead the children to spell aloud the title. Guide the children to open their Bibles to Genesis 6 9. Encourage the adults to assist the children. Help the children locate key names, numbers and words in the passage: 6, 2 and two, 40, Noah, ark, animals, wood, rain, and bow. Say: "Our Bible story is found in Genesis 6 9." 9aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Lead children to briskly rub their palms together, making the sound of rain. Exclaim: "That sounds like rain! That reminds me of a Bible story. Put your hands in your lap as we listen to our story." God Cared for Noah Based on Genesis 6:9-10,14-22; 7:1,13-19; 8:1-3,13-20; 9:12-16 Noah loved God. Noah chose to do what God wanted him to do. Noah had a wife and three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth (JAY feth). God Cared for Noah

God told Noah to build a large ark. An ark is like a really huge boat. God told Noah exactly how to build the ark. God gave Noah the size and shape. Noah was to use a certain type of wood. The ark was to have rooms inside with three levels of decks. Noah was to cover the inside and outside with sticky tar, which would keep the water out. Noah was to add a roof and one door. God told Noah He would send rain to cover the earth. God made a covenant with Noah. A covenant is 'a promise.' God promised Noah that He would not to hurt him or his family. God told Noah to take two of every living creature in the ark with his family. Noah did what God wanted him to do. Noah, his family, and all the animals went inside the ark. God closed the door to the ark. For the next 40 days it rained. Water covered all of the earth. Noah, his family, and the animals were safe. God caused a wind to blow that helped dry up the water. Noah stayed on the ark until the earth was dry. God then told Noah to come out of the ark. After Noah, his family, and the animals came out of the ark, Noah built an altar and worshiped God. God had kept His promise to Noah. As a sign, God said He would place a bow (rainbow) in the clouds to help Him remember the covenant He made with Noah. The covenant was God's promise not to cover the entire earth with water again. God kept His promise. 10aReview the Bible Story (4 minutes) Print "Teaching Picture 1 Noah" (CD). Teacher Tip Invite the children to make an animal sound if the statement is true or hammer in the air if it is false. State: "The Bible says that God put a bow in the clouds. We call that bow a rainbow. Let's look at a picture of our Bible story." Choose a child to display the teaching picture. Explain: "I will say a statement about the story. You will decide if the statement is true or false. Stand if the statement is true. Remain seated if the statement is false. Read the statements, guiding children to choose true or false. Encourage the children to change the false statements into true statements. True or False Statements Noah was a man who built a zoo. (false) God spoke to Noah and told him to build an ark. (true) Noah covered the ark with sticky tar. (true) Noah used his hunting skills to gather all the animals onto the ark, and then he closed the door. (false) Rain began to fall. It rained for 40 days. (true) Noah lived the rest of his life on the ark with his family and the animals. (false) God put a rainbow in the sky as a promise that He would never flood the earth again. (true) God cares for people and helps them. (true) 11aUse Worship Guides (7 minutes) Worship Guides, crayons Distribute Worship Guides and crayons. Encourage preschoolers to color the rainbow using the color code. Call attention to the ark picture on the Worship Guide. Instruct the children to point to the words as you read each ark fact. Instruct the children to draw lines to match the animals that are alike on the Worship Guide. 12 Sing "God's Perfect Plan" (DVD, 2 minutes) 13aPresent the Offering and Pray (2 minutes) 14aMake Application (3 minutes) State: "God cares and provides for people. Let's name a few ways that God shows His love for us." Lead the children to name ways, such as: gives us families, our church, food to eat, clothes to wear, the Bible, and so on. 15aGo to Application Activities or Wrap-Up Week of June 6, 2010

Wrap-Up (Large Group Only Format) 16 Sing "Whoa!" (DVD), 2 minutes) 17 Review (5 minutes) Container of items from step 7, "Animals" pictures from step 2 Display some of the items from the box. Inquire: "Did Noah have these items on the ark? What did Noah take on the ark?" (family, animals, food) Ask: "Who is the One that helps everyone?" (God) State: " 'God helps us.' Psalm 91:15. Let's say that verse together." Lead the children to say the verse. Distribute animal pictures. Direct the children to find others with matching pictures and stand together. Groups may be two or more children. Size is not a factor. Remark: "Let's think of some ways God shows His love to us. Talk with your partners (or groups) and be ready to tell us a way God shows love to us when I call on the pairs (or groups)." Encourage the children to respond. Help any pair (or group) having difficultly naming a way. Conclude: "God helps us in a variety of ways. God cares for people and helps them." 18 Introduce and Sing "Thank You, God" (DVD, 3 minutes) Say: "We have another fun song to learn. Let's watch the song first and then we will stand and sing it together." Play the video. Lead children in singing with the video. 19 Dismiss Children to Parents Wrap-Up (Application Activities Format) 16aSing "Whoa!" (God) Instruct: "Get into groups of three (or other numbers)." Assist the children. Continue: "Within your group, come up with two ways God shows us love. I will call on each group to tell us its choices." Allow a couple of minutes for the children to choose their responses. Call on the groups to respond. Conclude: "God helps us in a variety of ways. God cares for people and helps them." 19a Introduce and Sing "Thank You, God" (DVD, 3 minutes) Say: "We have another fun song to learn. Application Activities Select from the following choices. Each choice is designed for 20 minutes of small group time. Bible, crayons or markers, construction paper, cotton swabs or craft sticks, glue or wide masking tape, tempera paint in small containers, scissors, paper cut into 1-inch squares Print "Psalm 91:15" (CD). Teacher Tip Provide various colors of paint. Invite the kids to dip cotton swabs into the paint and make "dot" animals or people. Bible, large box, crayons, glue, animal or nature magazines, stuffed animals, bathrobes and squares of cloth, glue sticks, box cutter (adult use only) Print "Allergy Alert" (CD), list stuffed animals, and post. Cut out a door on one side of the box. Teacher Tip Create groups of children to do different tasks. Direct 1 group to cut out animal pictures or draw animals on the outside of the ark while some play on the inside, then switch playing positions so everyone has a turn inside the ark. Worship Through Arts and Crafts Make Arks Place the Bible verse and Bible in view of the children. Teach: "Noah obeyed God and built the ark so that his family and the animals would be safe. God sent rain for 40 days until the water covered the earth. The ark floated on the water. God took care of Noah, his family, and the animals. 'God helps us.' Psalm 91:15. Let s make small arks." Choose a way to make the arks. d Cotton Swabs: Kids draw water on the paper, then dip the swabs into glue and arrange them on their papers to create ark shapes. d Craft Sticks: Place a long piece of masking tape in front of each child (sticky side up; fold edges under to stick to table). Place a 1-inch paper square in the center of the tape. Invite the children to lay the same number of craft sticks on the tape on both sides of the paper square. Lift the edges of the tape off the table and overlap the ends on top of each other to form a circle. Crease the paper square to make a "v" shape (creased square makes the point of the "v"). Attach tape across both ends of the craft sticks to complete the ark. Distribute supplies to each preschooler. Ask: "How did Noah obey God? How did God help take care of Noah?" Conclude: "God helped Noah, his family, and the animals. 'God helps us.' Psalm 91:15. Who can name a way God shows His love for us?" Offer suggestions, such as: gives us families, the Bible, churches, friends, food to eat, and clothes to wear. Pray, thanking God for helping us. Worship Through Dramatic Play Play Inside a Pretend Ark Display a Bible and today s Bible verse. Call attention to the box. Explain: "In today s Bible story, Noah, his family, and many animals lived inside the ark for many days. They had food and were safe and dry, because God helped them. God helps us, too." Invite the kids to dress up using the robes and cloth squares (head scarves). Direct the children to decorate the ark: animals can be drawn on the walls (inside and out), pictures of animals can be cut out from the magazines and glued to the sides, wood planks can be drawn, or black for sticky tar can be drawn. Guide the children to play as you talk about ways God loves and takes care of us. Offer suggestions, such as: gives us families, the Bible, churches, friends, food to eat, and clothes to wear. Conclude: "God helped Noah, his family, and the animals. 'God helps us.' Psalm 91:15." Pray, thanking God for helping us. Week of June 6, 2010

Bible, 2 paper bags, masking tape, scissors Print 2 copies of "Animals" (CD), cut apart, and place into separate bags. Tape 2 START lines on the floor. Tape 2 lines about 10 feet away from the START lines. Place the bags beside the START lines. Magnifying glasses, small containers of water, paintbrushes, pieces of wood (sticks from local trees, lumber remnants, blocks), masking tape Teacher Tips Look for wood pieces with growth rings and/ or knots. Provide safety goggles, nails, and hammers for kids to nail into wood pieces. Provide pieces of petrified wood. Provide books with pictures of trees and/or wood pieces. Worship Through Games Run Animal Relays Place children into two teams. Line the teams up behind the starting lines. Explain: "God took care of Noah, his family, and all the animals on the ark. Today we will run animal relays." Instruct: "Everyone on the teams will take turns pulling pictures from the bags at your starting lines. You will pretend to walk like that animal or make the animal sound to the other line and return to your team. High-five the next person in line to signal it is that person s turn. Go to the end of the line and sit down. The game ends when all teammates are sitting down." Assist the kids with playing out animal movements or making the sounds. Direct kids to choose partners. Put the pictures back in the bags and place at the other lines (not START). Instruct: "This time, partners will run to the bags. One person will pull a picture from the bag. The other child must make the animal sound or walk like the animal. Partners will return to the team and high-five the next set of partners." Run the relay again, allowing partners to switch actions. Conclude: "God helped Noah, his family, and the animals. 'God helps us.' Psalm 91:15. Who can name a way God shows His love for us?" Offer suggestions, such as: gives us families, the Bible, churches, friends, food to eat, and clothes to wear. Pray, thanking God for helping us. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Examine Wood Teach: "Noah obeyed God and built the ark exactly the way he had been instructed by God. If he had not followed God s plan, the ark would not have floated on the water. God helped Noah by telling him how to build an ark that would float on the water. The ark that Noah built kept his family and the animals safe and dry. Let s examine some wood pieces." Invite the children to use the magnifying glasses to look at the wood pieces. State as the children work: "We are not sure what kind of wood was used on the ark. Some Bibles say gofer wood while others say other types of wood. We do know God told Noah to build an ark and Noah did." Encourage the children to paint the wood pieces with the water and use the magnifying glasses to see any changes. Highlight any growth rings or knots on the wood pieces. Lead the children to help clean the area. Conclude: "God helped Noah, his family, and the animals. 'God helps us.' Psalm 91:15. What are some ways God shows love to us?" Offer suggestions, such as: gives us families, the Bible, churches, friends, food to eat, and clothes to wear. Pray, thanking God for helping us.
