With hearts filled with delight and respect to our holy precious Guru Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche and our beloved Geshe Tenzin Zopa, LDC's Shabda is hereby re-launched bringing to you a variety of articles, Dharma advice from our masters, quotes, views of members old and new, useful information to strengthen Dharma practice and of course, lots of pictures. This edition of Shabda illustrates the flow of life ~ it welcomes the return of our present and cherished Resident Geshe Tenzin Zopa on 4 Jan 2009 and respectfully says goodbye to our previous geshe, the late Samlo Geshe Kelsang. Losang Dragpa Centre No, 1 Jln 17/21F, 46400 PJ Selangore, Malaysia E-mail: ldc2u@yahoo.com Tel: + 603-79683278 Web: www.fpmt-ldc.org

"Dearest siblings in our LDC Family, We are as varied and as colourful as a rainbow in terms of our wishes, hopes and views. But we share the same Guru and have the same goal in wanting lasting happiness and yes, enlightenment. Although we have not all met in person, reading your messages, observing you in activities, receving your endless flow of help and seeing your steadfast support says that you care deeply about this Centre and its work... and this makes us (in Exco) feel frightfully fortunate to have you as our dearest Dharma siblings! We are doing whatever we can to serve you and humbly offer this e-shabda (which will be issued bi-monthly via the LDC website) to keep you close to us always and well-informed about happenings, events, developments...please savour the Shabda. In the crazed-pace of our ordinary lives, we fill it with busy-ness and noise and simply forget to invite a Buddha for lunch! For those of us who have taken Refuge in the Triple Gem, there are refuge commitments and advice to think over and carry out. Here s a memory jogger ~ Every morning and evening, offer 3 prostrations to the Triple Gem When having food or drink mentally offer that to the Triple Gem first Have a mind of respect towards any image of the Buddha (sitting with one s feet pointing towards the Buddha/altar is an oops and a no-no) Respect all Sangha and avoid stepping over Sangha robes Avoid placing Dharma texts/pages on the bare ground, walking over them or carrying them together with things like one s shoes Have a compassionate attitude towards all beings Check one s own mind & senses to avoid negative action Rely on holy beings, listen well to the Dharma and do one s best to apply it 0

3 Young Buddhists Share Their Side of the Story Jane Thoo is a self driven, hard working professional who also has a soft spot for the homeless and destitute little old ladies and little orphans in need of help. She regularly offers her time and helps out at these homes when time permits! The journey begins with one small step but one giant leap in faith it all started with a friend inviting me to attend a Dharma talk by Ajahn Brahm in Singapore The Dharma talk was entitled "Opening The Door of Our Heart" That was my first exposure to Buddha's Teaching. I thought I would fall asleep in the session, BUT, I didn't instead that was the moment in life that got me started thinking, What is Buddhism? Am I being a true Buddhist by following my mother to the temple, or is it simply having vegetarian meals or participating in prayers during the religious events? Ajahn Brahm mentioned about the value of life, of mindfulness and the importance of being compassionate and it dawned on me that I just didn't know enough of Dharma. Although I only have very limited knowledge of Dharma, I try to apply Dharma knowledge in my work life. I used to be directionless, naïve, emotional and childish at the beginning of my work life and especially, possessing little confidence in whatever I did. With Dharma, I learned to maintain a positive state of mind and quickly build inner confidence and being in this constant state of positive mind has become the guiding principle of how I now live my life. Like any other sentient being, I too seek happiness and learning to practice Dharma has brought me much happiness and peace in my life. Thus far, Buddhism has helped me to think logically, to apply patience, being compassionate and most importantly, it has given me confidence to face all aspects of life. I will continue with my passion in learning the Buddha Dharma. With the right motivation, this will be the greatest path in seeking happiness in this life and future lives. I feel contented in being who I am today because I now have the Buddha Dharma. Jane Thoo 2

Peter Pan (yes, it's his real name, we checked J - Ed's note) is a 30 something year old project manager who is no longer an IT nerd but now a savvy practicing Buddhist who tries to juggle between the madness of samsara and enjoying the bliss of the path. 3 Young Buddhists Share Their Side of the Story Like many Malaysian Chinese, I was born into a typical family with a pretty much rojak kind of belief, a rich mixture of Taiosm, Confuciusnism, Buddhism or whatever. Unless we re born into a Christian family, we all have Agama: Buddha encrypted into our identity cards and will fill in our religion as Buddha into our application forms. Hence we call ourselves Buddhists without realizing what being a Buddhist is all about. Like many Buddhists, we grew up knowing Buddha as some divine person who lived thousands of years ago somewhere in India and preached about love, compassion and peace to all mankind. Some even grew up thinking that Buddha is some kind of a Supreme God, governing all the other Gods. We offer incense and pray to Buddha like we do to all other gods and deities, a practice deeply rooted in our Chinese culture in Malaysia. While growing up, I had many interesting exposures to the different religions. I was exposed to Islam in my primary school days and then Christianity in my early working adult days. I wasn t really lost or seeking for the purpose in life. I just happened to be there and followed along. In the end, I didn t turn out to be a Muslim or a Christian either despite my great respect for the goodness that they preached, which unfortunately are often misconstrued and caused some of the problems that we have in the world today. Then a few years ago, my best friend introduced me to Buddhism, the Theravadian tradition (I had no idea what the differences were in the various traditions). I was new to life in KL and kind of followed along when they had youth gatherings, charity events, Wesak day celebrations as well as the occasional study groups and dhamma talks. Nothing seemed to stick and I will always find excuses not to attend. Then a year ago I was sort of being pressured to sign up on Facebook by my university mates. Despite being an ex-it nerd, online chats and random friends-making are not the stuff for me. Then I came upon a fellow Buddhist on Facebook, in the Tibetan tradition who happens to be going to LDC and invited me to attend a puja. That was when I got hooked, but in a very pleasant and amazing way. My life completely changed and I made good dhamma friends from the center who gave me excellent dhamma advice through our weekly mamak sessions. Looking back, I began to realize how karma, the law of cause and effect, works in amazing ways to affect changes in my life. Nothing is coincidental. I have since attended 2 semesters of the Buddhist Foundation course (BFC) including Lam Rim and took 2 exams, under the guidance of our Venerable Tenzin Zopa. I passed both exams, though barely. Profound changes started to take place in my daily life even while I was undergoing the BFC courses. There were many occasions where I was able to take a step back to see how ego, attachment and anger were ruling my life. I began to take steps to remedy the problems I had in the past and also helped others to do the same. By helping others, it helped me to develop compassion and ultimately Bodhicitta, the wish to become a Buddha to help all sentient beings. It s a new journey with many humps along the way but I m definitely excited to find out what s coming up next. Peter Pan 3

3 Young Buddhists Share Their Side of the Story Kenny Ooi, otherwise known by his refuge name, Tenzin Nyingje, is a new member of LDC, 25, Malaysia. He shares with us his side of the story: My journey into the Path began when my dad read Shakyamuni Buddha and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva bed time stories to me when I was still a kid. As the years go by, my dad saw the interest in the Dharma grew in me and that is when he started to expose me to the real Dharma. As I went through college, I found the Hinayana path and learning the basics of Dharma on my own. Thirsting for more, as I started working, I found the Chinese Mahayana path and got to know more about the pure land of Amitabha Buddha. But I wasn t satisfied and I chance upon the Vajrayana path through a dharma friend at LDC. After attending some pujas, dharma classes and a personal consultation session with resident teacher of LDC, Geshe Tenzin Zopa, I knew that I have finally found the path that resonates with me. I have many times cried internally whenever I visited any Buddhist centres, temples and shrines as I always feel I have returned home whenever I am there. During the consultation with Geshe-la, I have expressed to him that I want to renounce the layman life but his advise was always to fully study the LAMRIM first and create the merits to renounce first. I am doing that now. How has Buddhism changed my life? Gradually, through daily prayers and practices, I have learnt to see things in life in a very different perspective. I used to see and want things that other people have. But after learning the Dharma, I have learnt that its all but emptiness and learnt to detached myself from it. Now, I see life in a much simpler way. Buddhism is not just a religion or philosophy, but a way of life. The Buddha had taught us many meaningful things as the Dharma is not like any other knowledge in that it helps define the true meaning of life and why we suffer so much. It s a way to look into ourselves and discover the very Buddha nature in us. I thank my dad for being my first guru in bringing me to Triple Gem and all my new found dharma brothers and sisters who brought me to this state of awakening. No words could ever expressed my gratitude. Sincerely, Thank You! Kenny Ooi 4

Tasting Tantra What is Tantra? What does it involve and how do I know if I am ready? These are often perplexing common questions that newcomers to tantra have to grapple with. Kieren Lim digs deep into the recesses of his failing memory to share with Shabda readers his first taste of tantra and how it impacts one s life. In January 2002 at a Kalachakra empowerment in Bodhgaya, India, Jhado Rinpoche commented that when we hear the word highest tantric yoga, immediately our eyes light up, we get very interested, because many people have the misconception of the highest yoga tantra with unrestrained behavior, such as drinking intoxicants and unrestrained physical relationships and so forth, claiming this to be highest yogic practices. This is entirely wrong. The highest yoga tantra is the most profound path in the sense that it has a system explaining the physical constituents, the energy winds, the channels, as well as the elements within them. One attempts to stop the gross winds and mind, one attempts to activate the extremely subtle wind and mind, and on the basis of that, one meditates on emptiness and the divine form of the deity and achieves the indivisible holy body and mind of the Buddha. I was like that too..eyes lighting up whenever I hear of a highest yoga tantra (HYT) initiation being conferred. I am sure some of you would have similar experiences. So, what does tantra entails? Is it about chasing after lamas for initiations and collecting deities as yidams? I wish I could tell you it is that way but as I soon discover in the aftermath of the initial euphoria of having received a deity initiation, taking the HYT initiation is a lifetime commitment that requires strong discipline, unwavering sense of faith/responsibility and strong devotion to your guru. My life changed in many little ways after taking HYT initiations. For one, there will be lesser late nights out engaging in samsaric social banter as you begin to realize there is a stack of sadhana (practices) commitments that may be waiting for you to complete before bedtime. I used to joke that new initiates should take a before and after picture.you ll definitely see the unflattering difference from not having the discipline to sleep early. I love to travel and how has taking HYT changed my traveling habits? Well, for one I now lug around a portable altar and my mandala set but I try to think of this as my merit making tool, so it isn t so bad when you transform the mind this way. But these examples are but just small outer adjustments that one makes in life and if you really think this is hardship, it s time to think of past practitioners who went through much more tougher conditions, even at the cost of their lives to practice diligently and accomplished great results. 5

T a s t i n g T a n t r a What are the factors to consider when deciding if one is ready to engage in HYT practices :- So, yes, there will be minor adjustments and some discomfort but which dharma practice brings realizations without joyous effort? More importantly, one should consider how tantra offers one the precious opportunity to gain enlightenment and help prepares one for future lives. Death presents itself as the best opportune moment to realize and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, leading to the state of Buddhahood in one lifetime if one practices tantra correctly. It is said that out of the 1,000 Buddhas who will descend to teach the dharma, only 3 Buddhas of this fortunate eon will teach tantra, thus if we miss this opportunity during Shakyamuni s time, we will have to wait for the last Buddha of this fortunate eon to receive tantra teachings/initiations. There is also no guarantee we ll have the perfect human rebirth during that time either. It is therefore very precious. However, rushing into tantra is dangerous without the pre-requisite practices and when one engages in it with improper motivation. Just as HYT is the quickest path to enlightenment, the consequences of breaking commitments, samaya and vows are not to be taken lightly as it is also the quickest one way ticket to the lower realms! OK, let s assume you already know the other pre-requisites (and if you don t, here they are again) :- 1. 2. A general understanding of the 3 Principle Aspects of the Path Renunciation, Bodhichitta and Emptiness Able to generate unfaltering faith and take refuge in the Triple Gem. 3. Familiar with the lam rim 4. 5. Generates altruistic bodhichitta motivation for taking the initiation Able to generate and stabilize strong guru devotion) Achieving Buddhahood requires one to take the path less traveled and while it may be strewn with difficulties and hardship, one only have to reflect on the preciousness of the perfect human rebirth, karma, impermanence and it doesn t seem all that impossible.it s all in the mind, all in the mind, as they say! Kieren Lim is a fumbling student still finding his way to Buddhahood. He can be reached in the emptiness of cyber space at kieren.lim@gmail.com 1. 2. 3. 4. Faith Having stable faith in the Guru and the Triple Gem. Train the mind to see the guru-deity as inseparable. It is good to read the 50 verses of Guru Devotion. Motivation One should generate the Mahayana motivation to benefit sentient beings by engaging in HYT practice as the quickest means to achieve Buddhahood. Commitment and Discipline Able and determined to put into practice the daily commitments and advises of the guru, not forsaking these even for one day or at the cost of one s life. Lam Rim A basic understanding of the lam rim with emphasis on renunciation, bodhichitta and emptiness are important. 5. Keeping Bodhisattva, Tantric & Samaya Vows Keeping these vows are the pre-requisites for gaining realizations, breaking them and not repairing/renewing these vows create causes to be born in the lower realms. 6. LESS SLEEP! Carrying out prayer commitments homework with some level of quality, takes time. 6

Children playing here have made mounds of sand as stupas in devotion to the Buddhas. All of them have become partakers of Enlightenment said the Buddha as recorded in the Saddarma- Pundarika Sutra. Stupas contribute to the spiritual well-being of the patron (one who supports its creation; one who causes the stupa to be present in any place), since by doing so, he creates a positive influence in the minds of others. The following story illustrates the wealth of merit to be gained through this practice. It tells of a man who once made a single stupa tsa-tsa (small clay stupa) with pure motivation. He became enlightened in one lifetime. A second man found this tsa-tsa in the rain and with the same pure motivation, attempted to protect the tsa-tsa by making a shelter for it out of his shoe. He too became enlightened within that lifetime. A third man upon seeing this tsa-tsa covered with an old shoe, with pure motivation, removed the shoe out of respect and he too gained enlightenment in that lifetime. Such is the power of veneration of this supreme holy object, with pure motivation Stupa = the symbol of the enlightened mind. And more. The shape of the stupa ( chorten in Tibetan; pagoda to the Chinese) resembles the body of the Buddha and evokes his presence in your home. The 3 main elements are the base, dome and the crowning parts. The base represents the Buddha s throne; the 4 steps represents his legs crossed in lotus position; the dome, his torso, the square his eyes and ears and the spire his crown. At a deeper level, the 4 steps speak of the perfect abandonments; the four legs of miracles; the 5 powers and the 4 close contemplations. The base symbolizes the 5 forces of faith, enthusiastic perseverance, mindfulness, concentration and wisdom. The dome is the vessel for the 7 essential conditions of enlightenment : mindfulness, wisdom, effort, joy, flexibility, concentration and equanimity. The harmika (upper part) symbolizes the 8-fold noble path; the 10 discs of the spire represent the 10 powers of the Buddha; at the top of the spire are the sun and the moon representing wisdom and method. The union of these two represented by the jewel ~ enlightenment ~ at the very top. To illustrate the comprehensiveness of the stupa as the ultimate symbol, it embraces the five elements as well. The solidity of the earth is The Story of the Stupa in Your Home represented by the base; the fluidity of water is represented by the round dome; the state of fire is symbolised by the spire; the wind element is represented by the moon and the element of space is represented by the sun. Although there may be variations amongst stupas of various traditions, the stupa is always seen as representing the path to enlightenment. Inviting a stupa to Your home and placing it on an altar or in a clean, high place and offering it respect with the remembrance of the Buddha s teachings, creates limitless causes for one s spiritual evolution and lasting happiness. He becomes rich and wealthy with an abundant treasury, who bows with folded palms at the stupa of the Buddha ~ Shiksa Samuchaya) - Extracted from The Stupa by B.Newbery and Iona Spens. 7

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso,67, from Samlo Khangtsen, Sera Je Monastery India, affectionately known as Genla to early LDC students, succumbed to cancer at his home at Sera Je Monastery in southern India on Saturday 8th November at 10.42pm local time. Genla had come to Kuala Lumpur in 1998 when Huei and Jun Mei two of our founder members went to India, with the blessings of Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche, to invite Genla to be our teacher. Genla stayed for 5 years in all and taught us the full detailed commentary of the graduated path to enlightenment called Lam Rim in Tibetan and many other important dharma texts. He was a very kind and humble lama who spent most of his time between teachings reading dharma and doing prayers. He really practiced what he taught us. Even our Guru Zopa had strong faith in him, and often rang up from overseas to request Genla to perform special prayers. Tribute & Farewell To LDC First Resident Teacher Samlo Geshe Kelsang A G r e a t T e a c h e r Genla in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Three other students from our centre and I left on Friday 24th November for Sera to see Genla as well as attend some teachings from Kyabje Chodan Rinpoche. I had the opportunity to sit with Genla each morning for a few minutes He was obviously in pain, also can hardly see, but his mind is totally clear and he spoke with his usual voice like when he was teaching us at LDC. I cried but he said it was really not necessary to cry, because this is samsara and that he was dying, I did not think that it would be that soon. His root guru Gyurme Tantric College Khensur Lobsang Tenzin Rinpoche, popularly well known by all in Sera as Gen Dhuptopla (the Tantric master) had just returned to Sera after a 6 month teaching tour in the USA. just a few days after my arrival. He had visited Genla, advising him to strongly practice Tong Len and Bodhicitta.. Genla had of course kept his samaya all his life and is continuingly doing so at this most difficult time, all day long doing all his varied commitments sometimes with the assistance of our 3rd Geshela Tenzin Deyang who is his son and student. So this is proof of real life dharma and not just Buddhist teachings. Genla s situation was sad for me, nevertheless inspiring for my dharma practice. I left Sera for home on Monday 3rd November, not thinking that it would be that soon for Genla s 8

demise to happen. In the meantime LDC supported Kasih Hospice s deployment of Siew Foong and Nurse Cheah to Sera on the 5th on a mercy mission to help manage Genla s pain which was getting worse. This was because it was difficult to get modern medication such as morphine to this remote countryside. By this time Genla was showing signs of dying. Dissolution of the earth water, fire and wind elements with their usual signs was easily observed. He finally stopped breathing on 8th November. Clinical death occurs when a person stops breathing but in Buddhist terms, death only occurs later when the consciousness leaves the body. Here Genla s body remained warm, he was in fact doing what is called the clear light meditation. This meditation can last for as long as 3 or more days. The subtle minds of white, red, and near black attainment and clear light visions must take place before the mind leaves the body. Genla s Guru ascertained Genla s mind left him on Tues 11th. Genla was so blessed that his root Guru came back in good time to do all the prayers including self initiations with Chodan Rinpoche and other high lamas before he passed away to preside over all the arrangements for the proceedings and final cremation. As a mark of devotion and gratitude, Mama Yap, Lian and myself left for Sera that very Tuesday evening, landing at Bangalore at midnight and continuing by road, finally reaching Sera 4.00am Wednesday morning, just before the cremation puja was about to begin at 6.00am. It was an experience not to be forgotten, witnessing the funeral proceedings of a high lama. Mama Yap and I as Exco also represented LDC. Tribute To LDC First Resident Teacher, Samlo Geshe Kelsang From the night Genla stopped breathing on 8th Nov dozens of monks do pujas both morning and night and offerings of 108 butter lamps were offered continuously watched over by monks on round the clock duty roster for 7 days. Gurus and high lamas do self initiations and special prayers. The house was abuzz with activities. Aspect of Vajrasattva When Genla left clear light meditation, his four sons /students faithful Jangchupla, Geshe Tenzin Deyang, Wesi Rinpoche and Deyang Rinpoche cleansed his body and dressed him as Vajrasattva in a sitting meditation posture. It was rare to witness such guru devotion. The cremation stupa was very quickly built with bricks cement and clay on the day Genla left clear light; It has a 4ft square fire Cremation Stupa Inside Stupa - Location for body Genla s body inside Stupa pit 3ft high and a 3-D elliptical stupa sitting on top with four holes and a funnel, total height about 8ft The Stupa was facing West. A hole sufficiently big enough to allow Genla s body to fit in was located on the East side. The whole proceedings were presided over by Genla s Guru and another Tantric College Khensur Rinpoche and high Geshes and many monks. Choden Rinpoche was informed but Rinpoche were giving oral transmissions at the monastery. Starting the Vajrasattva Fire Puja After ceremonial prayers were conducted in Genla s room, his body was brought downstairs to sit inside the cremation stupa located on the eastern side of the front garden of the house. The fire puja lasted some 4 hours, after which all the holes on the 4 sides were sealed with the pictures of the four guardian protectors. The fire stupa was kept for 7 days before it is broken open for Genla s Remains. The stupa remain very hot and burning even over the next day. The next day his Guru and few other high lams continue to do self 9

Tribute To LDC First Resident Teacher, Samlo Geshe Kelsang initiations. Dozens of eagles came, flew around/ circumnutated Genla s stupa. Jangchupla said this has never happened before all the years they lived in the house. All signs were auspicious. Not every Sangha is accorded this kind of cremation. Genla s Guru approved this way because Genla is considered a good Tantric practitioner. Of course Genla will never claim to be a high lama because of his humility. Stupa is sealed with Guardian Door Protectors for seven (7) days I hope and pray and ask you all to join me to pray for his quick return to us. Our Guru Zopa was kept continuously informed and he requested the monasteries and abbots to dedicate for Genla and for LDC to do a Nyung Nay retreat. Om Mani Padme Hum Quah Kean Yeang 23 November 2008 Quotes From Zopa Rinpoche "The mind of most of us ordinary beings is like a headstrong toddler. We can't just do everything the mind says and give it everything it says it wants--just as we can't with a toddler. That would lead to a very ill-mannered child indeed! It is a very dangerous to do everything the mind says." Dozens of eagles came to circumnutate. Daily prayers and pujas will continue by the khangtsen monks over the 49 days. It was a most memorable experience for us, although sad yet inspiring. Genla s demise is a great loss not only for LDC, Sera Monastery but also a great loss to Buddhism particularly Tibetan Buddhism and to sentient beings. For me it is personal loss as he has taught and benefited me so much. The only way I can repay his kindness is to listen to his parting advice for me just before he died, and that is to practice and practice for the sake of others and keep samaya pure. "Whether you work in a Dharma center, at home, or anywhere else, your attitude should be that you are there for other beings to make use of. When you don't have this attitude you should be the master and other beings your servants, your work become a problem. When you have this attitude, your work becomes a pleasure--even though it is the same. When you change your attitude so that beings are the master and you are the servant, the problem is stopped, and there is only enjoyment. Then no matter how hard the work is, and even if you don't succeed in it, you enjoy it." "Real peace and happiness has to come from the heart, from within. So therefore, to eliminate wars and destroying each other, to eliminate famine, disease and earthquakes, and to eliminate all other disasters an unfavourable experiences, all this can be stopped by having loving kindness toward each other. From having a good heart with loving kindness, negative action cannot arise." 10
