The name Jehovah-Shammah is found in the last verse of the Book of Ezekiel. ---- and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there (Ezekiel 48:35) Ezekiel began his prophecies at a time when Israel was at her lowest point of her history. They were taken away into captivity by Babylon as a result of their idolatry and God is about to withdraw His presence not only from the temple, but from the city of Jerusalem
Before we can fully appreciate Ezekiel's revelation of the name Jehovah Shammah, it is important to understand why the Lord was NOT there!... God redeemed Israel as a Nation, to make Israel His own I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine (Lev 20:26) God want His presence to be in the midst of Israel just as it was in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve before they sinned (Genesis 3)
So the Lord spoke to Moses their leader 8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them --- 22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. (Exodus 25:8 & 22) God always want to be with His people to fellowship with them.
After Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, the proximity of man s contact with God changed. After the fall, the closest the Israelites came to God dwelling with them was his presence in the tabernacle and the temple. In addition to the proximity changing, the nature of our contact also changed. Instead of walking intimately, hand in hand with our Lord who was just there, now he could only be approached through the priests. Only the High priest could enter the holy of holies and that was only on one special day. No one could touch the Ark of the Covenant or dare to approach the place where God dwelt
Four hundred years after Israel took possession of the promised land, King Solomon build a House for the presence of God in Jerusalem as instructed by David his father. When the Temple was completed, God took residence there. His presence was affirmed by filling the Temple with His Glory. (1Kings 8:10-11; 2 Chronicles 7:1-2) And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the LORD. God was There
The presence of God Himself came in and filled up the Temple in a cloud The Shekinah the feeling and visible presence of God God wanted to be with His people, to instruct and direct them. To protect them, comfort them and meet their needs Both tabernacle and Temple were the place of His abode and His visible manifestation in Israel But the relationship was to be broken because of Israel repeated whoredom after other Gods. Jehovah is holy God that cannot abide in the presence of sin (Habakkuk 1:13)
Ezekiel chapters 8-11 reveals how the presence of God, departed from His Temple, because of the sins taking place. Ezekiel 8:1-16 God brought Ezekiel to the Temple in a vision to witness what the nation and their leaders are doing in secret, thinking God did not know. Ezekiel witnesses the idolatry taking place in secret how the nation s leaders worshipped abominations in the Temple. God will not do anything without showing it to His prophets (Amos 3:7) God asks Ezekiel, Have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness (Ezekiel 8:5,12,15,17).
God promised to deal with wayward Israel Therefore I will deal with them in anger; I will not look on them with pity or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them. (Ezekiel 8:18) God calls His angelic Guards to slay the idolaters in the city (Ezekiel 9). This action is later fulfilled when the armies of Babylon destroy the city and slay its inhabitants in 586 B.C. Then the glory of the LORD departed from over the threshold of the temple and stopped above the cherubim Ezekiel 10:18
Sensing the impending judgement of God, Ezekiel cried to the Lord Then I fell facedown and cried out in a loud voice, Alas, Sovereign Lord! Will you completely destroy the remnant of Israel? (Ezekiel 11:13b) After the Lord had addressed Ezekiel's fear with a promise that all the remnant of Israel would be brought to a complete end with the prophetic promises of future restoration physically and spiritually (Ezekiel 11:17-20). Then the glory of the Lord lifted from the midst of the city of Jerusalem and stood upon the mountain which was on the east (Ezekiel 11:22-23)
In Ezekiel 43:1-7 Ezekiel saw in a vision the His glory of the Lord returning to the temple and the Lord promised in verse 7 I will live among Israel for ever As the "capstone" to this great promise for a future and a hope God gives us this great name Jehovah Shammah! In Ezekiel 48:35 and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.
The people loved Jerusalem and the temple. And they were full of sorrow when the temple was destroyed and they were in Babylonians captivity (Ps 137: 1-6) Ezekiel prophesy brought this people great consolation and hope for the restoration of their land and temple. When the children of Israel returned to their home land from captivity a new temple called the temple of Zerubbabel was built.
The old men cried when they saw the new temple because it was not comparable with grandness of Solomon s temple. To them the grandness of the temple determines the Presence of there But God said in Haggai 2:7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. The desire of all nations is pointing to the Messiah. Malachi 3:1 the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in:
That very prophecy came true when the exiles returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the walls. God s presence returned to the temple in the form of a tiny baby brought to the temple to be offered back to God by his parents, Joseph and Mary (Luke 2:22-38). In Luke 2:32, Simeon filled with the Holy ghost called baby Jesus A light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Israel
The Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means God is with us ) (Isaiah 7:14 NLT). Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us. (Matthew 1:23)
This prophesy has been fulfilled in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ - John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth Jesus Christ is the Lord of Glory (1 Cor 2:8) The fullness of God the father dwells in Christ Colossians 1:19 He is God in human flesh He is the brightness of God s glory and the express image of His person Hebrews 1:3
1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NLT) Don t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself Believers are the Temple of God, the dwelling place of His glory.
Because we are the temple of God, the dwelling place of His glory we are to; 1. Let our light shine before men in such a way that they may see the glory through our good works (Matthew 5:16) 2 Corinthians 6:16-18; 2Corinthians 7:1
While this application was to be given to a city, God is teaching us all the time that He is with us no matter what As a believer, we are the temple of the Most High God. No mater what we are going through, The LORD is There with us. In good and hard times? The LORD is there. In the raging storm, The LORD is there. When we are lonely and scared, The LORD is There. When faced with a mountain that seems impossible for us to climb, The LORD is There. When surrounded by people that are abusing us in some manner, either physically, emotionally, or spiritually, The LORD is There
