We brought 16 students and four chaperones for about a five day formational experience of Faith, Community and Witness. The pilgrimage was funded generously by donors. The students themselves wrote essays to qualify for the trip. This year s essay focused on the role of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Pro-Life cause. The students wrote a six page essay each. We arrived in Washington DC on Wednesday and settled into our residence. Our first stop was the largest church in the United States, the beautiful Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This was the church we took up a collection for some months back to help finish the mosaics on the inside center Trinity Dome. I will tell you that it is beautiful. Half our students were new this year and to watch them be moved by this Church s majesty was moving in itself. We toured the church and made our way to the crypt where we offered a Divine Mercy chaplet before the Blessed Sacrament entrusting the trip to Jesus. Each night when we returned to our residence we would have supper and gather for faith sharing and night prayer. The students were fantastic. Thursday was a formation day in preparation for the March. We began by making our way to the new Planned Parenthood megaplex. A darkly disturbing place. We took time to pray a Mercy chaplet in front and stayed to give silent witness to the many workers, escorts and individuals sadly taken in by the veils of this company. We were respectful, kind, somber. We then toured the Jewish Holocaust Museum drawing the parallels of the common disregard for the beauty of human life and the dignity of every person. Friday was the March itself. We began at the Mass for Life joining thousands of students and hundreds of priests and bishops for confession and Eucharist. We then proceeded to the National Mall and joined hundreds of thousands in a peaceful, prayerful grace-filled March to the Supreme Court. The joy of the marchers was woven with the saddening images of the unborn and the consoling voices of women and men who have emerged healed from their abortions through Rachel s Vineyard and the organization Silent No More. The March is always a life changing experience. Following the March we regrouped at a local Catholic church for coffee and hot chocolate, joining hundreds of others. Saturday was a day to enjoy one another and we toured the new Bible Museum. It was built by the Hobby Lobby founders. What a place. We then headed over to the monuments, prayed for our veterans, and walked up to the Lincoln Memorial. We watched the sun set off the back taking in the warmest temperatures of the week in the upper 50 s. We were treated at the end of the day to a sky of orange and pink. It was vivid. We returned home for Mass, like every day, and shared the graces of God that we received on the trip. There is much hope for the young. Truly disciples on the Way as Bishop would say. Continue to pray for our young people and thank you for your support of one of the most impactful trips of the school year. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

FEBRUARY 3 & 4, 2018 PAGE 3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed...he told them, Let us go to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come. MARK 1:35, 38 SAVE THE DATE: In today s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God. Welcome!
