SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The Savior we have waited for is coming. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The rugged land shall be made a plain; the rough country, a broad valley (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11). Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading Conduct yourselves in holiness, hastening the coming of the day of God (2 Peter 3:8-14). Gospel I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:1-8). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. THIS SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT calls us to prepare for the coming of the Lord. This is the time to ask God for His help to make our lives more centered on His teachings. The candle for the Second Sunday of Advent is the Bethlehem Candle or the Candle of Faith. It reminds us of the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem and helps us to remain faithful that Jesus is coming and to prepare for His birth. You may want to meditate on these verses: "As it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight! Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be levelled, winding ways be straightened and rough roads made smooth and all humanity will see the salvation of God." (Luke 3:4-6) TODAY S - SECOND COLLECTION RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT This Second Collection benefits the Religious Retirement Community Fund. May God bless you for your generosity. ST. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE FEAST DAY DECEMBER 12 th This is the story of the extraordinary encounter between the Queen of Heaven, and typically enough, one of her little ones. On December 9, 1531, just about ten years after the Spaniards had first brought their faith to Mexico, an Indian man named Juan Diego, a recent convert to Christianity, was making his way along the hill of Tepeyac, just outside the city of Tenochtitlan, which would later evolve into Mexico City. He was heading to morning mass when he heard a burst of birdsong and turned to see where it was coming from. What he saw took his breath away, for, standing before him, was a woman closed in celestial light. The Lady announced herself as the Mother of the Most High God, and she had a request for Juan Diego. Would you ask the Bishop to construct a temple here in my honor? Being a simple man, Juan Diego obeyed. He was ushered into the presence of Bishop Juan Zumàrraga, a Franciscan friar and a good man, the builder of the first hospital and university in the Americas, and a protector of the native population. Bishop Zumàrraga listened patiently to Juan Diego s story, but, understandably enough, he asked Juan Diego for a confirming sign from the Heavenly Lady. On December 12, Juan Diego went once again to Tepeyac and found the Virgin there. She invited him to remove his tilma, the simple coarse poncho-like garment he was wearing, and then, with her help, he gathered up a bunch of roses that were, despite the lateness of the year, in full bloom. This, she said, would be a sign for the Bishop. Juan Diego hurried with his bundle to the Bishop s office, but he was made to wait. It was said that over zealous aides of Zumàrraga s tried, without success, to find out what the Indian was carrying in his tilma. Finally, Juan Diego was brought into the Bishop s presence. He opened his cloak and the roses spilled out. Then, to Juan Diego s amazement, the Bishop and his assistants were kneeling, for, on the inside of the tilma was something extraordinary, an image of the woman clothed in light. On the spot, Zumàrraga vowed to build the temple the Lady had asked for, and it still stands near the hill of Tepeyac. (please, continue) One might be tempted to dismiss this as a charming story from a simpler, more credulous time, but the best contradiction to this kind of skepticism is the tilma itself, which is still displayed in the massive Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Careful studies have shown that the tilma is indeed from the Sixteenth Century and woven from cactus fibers. This juxtaposition is itself puzzling, since that kind of garment, under the best of conditions, usually lasts for at most twenty or twenty-five years. And then there is the image, the strange and beautiful image, which has beguiled millions for the past five hundred years. Scientific analysis has revealed that no known pigmentation was involved and that no underdrawing is discernible. Therefore, just how those colors were transferred onto the tilma is mysterious. What no one, even the most stubborn skeptic, can dispute is that within ten years of the apparition to Juan Diego almost the entire Mexican nation nine million people converted to Christianity. And the image continues to beguile, fascinate, and beckon. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most visited religious site in the Christian world, surpassing Lourdes, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and St. Peter s itself. SHARING GOD S LOVE THIS WEEKEND DECEMBER 9-10 Our Annual Sharing God s Love at Christmas Gift Collection is this weekend. The Tabernacle Candle was donated by The D Andrea Family in Loving Memory of Daniel and Rosemary D Andrea FEAST OF ST. LUCIA DECEMBER 13 St. Lucia was a virgin martyr during the earliest centuries of Christianity under its worse persecution at the hands of the Roman Empire, therefore making her one of the most glorious saints in Heaven. Lucia means light, a fitting name for a young woman who was known to visibly glow and radiate in her love for Jesus Christ. There are many beautiful traditions associating this saint with the meaning of her name, the story of her life, and her glorious position in Heaven. Her Feast Day is celebrated with candles, torches, and even bonfires. Tradition holds that St. Lucia would wear a wreath of candles on her head so she could see better, her arms full of supplies, as she served the poor Christians hiding from persecution in the dark underground catacombs. In some Catholic cultures (especially in Italy and Scandinavia) it s common to have a Mass procession on St. Lucia s Feast Day with young girls carrying candles, and the lead girl dressed in a white gown for purity, often with a red sash as a sign of martyrdom, wearing a wreath of lingonberry branches which are evergreen and symbolize new life in winter, and lit candles. In some homes, the oldest daughter will wake early, dress in white with a wreath of lit candles and bring special St. Lucia s Day Buns, a sweet treat dotted with raisins, to her family for breakfast. Why not bring a little of St. Lucia s light into your Advent season? LADIES GUILD CHRISTMAS SOCIAL THIS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12 th, 7:00 PM LOWER PARISH HOUSE ST.
