MARQUETTE ASSEMBLY #1197 October 2017 Faithful Friar: Father Daniel Schuster Countless times we were taught as young students that catholic means universal. Never did I imagine that these words would take on such life and meaning as they have in these past few years. As each of us encounters just how vast the world is, and just how incredible it is that the universal church reaches to the ends of the earth, it is quite humbling. Like the character Job in the Bible, one can say, Behold, I am insignificant (Job 40:4). I share this thought with you as I travel to Rome in early October for the transitional diaconate ordination of seminarian Greg Parent. Seeing the churches and visiting a foreign culture reminds me of the universality of the church. There are Masses in Italian, English, Latin, Polish, Spanish, and countless other languages at St. Peter's Basilica at the Holy See. My language is not the norm. I share this thought with you as we assist the victims of hurricanes in their recovery and rebuilding efforts. Helping people we have never met, in the name of Jesus, reminds me of the universality of the Church. My needs are not always the most important. I share this thought with you as I work with our young people. As priest I still struggle to find the words of counsel that will help them hear the voice of Jesus in this busy world. Some of the decisions they make cause deep wounds. I do not have all the answers, but Jesus the healer is available to them through prayer. Jesus Christ is the universal savior, and sometimes we forget this simple fact! Pope Francis, in all of the many sound bites we receive, calls us to get beyond our own preoccupation with the self. He calls us as Shepherd to be more universal, because this leads to 1 P age
encounters with Jesus, which leads us to salvation. As Catholic Knights, we are on a mission to be universal, to serve the universal Church, and share the universal Savior. God Bless you all!
