Romans 6:15-19
For us to be victorious over sin, we have to remember that we are dead to sin, alive to God, and we no longer have to let sin reign in our lives. Romans 5:20 where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.
Romans 6:1-2 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Romans 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Romans 5:20 Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more. Romans 6:2 How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Romans 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
There were still those people who would try to pervert the message of grace. Does not being under the law give us any incentive to sin? Galatians 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
Romans 5:20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, Paul makes the point that obeying the law won t get us to heaven. But, he never completely dismisses the law.
Romans 7:12 So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 1 Timothy 1:8 But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, The fact that Jesus completely obeyed the law shows us that it s right to obey God s law.
Matthew 5:17-18 17 Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Romans 6:15-19 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.
Grace does not equal freedom to sin. None of us are completely free. You are the slave of the one you obey. We are all either slaves to sin or righteousness. For a slave, obedience isn t optional.
All of humanity is a slave 16 either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness. We choose who we are enslaved to. We all start out enslaved to sin. However, through the power of God, we are able to break free of that slavery.
When we do that we become a slave of another. We become a slave of righteousness. Romans 6:17-18 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
We should always give God all the praise for our salvation. Ephesians 2:4-5 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
John 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. Helkuō (draw) literally means to drag. How God s sovereignty and our obedience work together is one of the great mysteries of the Bible.
They work together, even though we will never be able to reconcile how they do. They work together in such a way that our salvation begins with God s sovereignty and He deserves all the credit for our salvation. God uses us to share the gospel message with others.
2 Timothy 2:10 For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.
We are bound to either sin or God. Obedience to sin leads to death. Obedience to God leads to righteousness and eternal life. We will all serve, or be enslaved to, somebody.
Romans 6:19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.
If you are a slave to sin, God wants to free you from your slavery and give you life in Christ. If you are a slave to righteousness, God wants you to live a life of obedience to your master.
