Nncy Leigh DeMoss reminisces... How well I remember receiving tht cll from Dennis Riney, which long story short culminted two yers lter in the lunch of Revive Our Herts. Dennis (founder of FmilyLife) hd no wy of knowing tht his cll hd been preceded by God s tht the Lord hd been birthing in my hert burden to believe Him for movement of revivl nd reformtion in the herts nd homes of Christin women. From the outset, I hd relized tht embrcing this clling would require swimming upstrem. The thought of lunching out into the deep with dily rdio progrm ws even more dunting. The Lord grciously shepherded my hert through the initil point of surrender nd then lengthy process of seeking to know His will on the mtter. It s probbly good thing the Lord didn t show me how drsticlly my life would chnge once the decision ws mde to proceed. In one fell swoop, I ws tossed into tempest of hrder work, longer hours, tighter dedlines, nd greter chllenges thn I hd ever fced in my life. But the grce of God hs been so rel ech step of the wy. Not only hve I grown personlly in mny different relms, but we re being given the privilege of procliming Christ nd speking truth into the lives of women in wy tht is despertely needed in our dy. As result, lives nd homes re being snctified, God is being glorified, nd His Kingdom is being furthered in this world. Wht gret privilege! She greed to shre some excerpts with us to give us glimpse of how the Lord led her in tht journey, s well s how He birthed the burden for this ministry in her hert. To get some context, we go bck four yers before the rdio ministry begn... September 15, 1997 My spirit is exercised within me s I hve been reding bout the historicl development of seculr nd religious feminism. I m ngry t the powerful lies tht hve been foisted on whole genertion of women, t the pervsiveness of feminist thinking in our culture, nd t the extent to which Christin women hve bought into the whole philosophy. Wht cn be done to turn the tide? Wht does God wnt me to do? A hndful of women hve succeeded by their writings nd influence in cpturing the herts of n entire genertion with their godless philosophies. Wht could God do with hndful of women who were determined to reclim surrendered ground? Grnt me courge to fce whtever tsk You plce upon me. My You be glorified nd Your wys exlted through my life. September 17, 1997 One mn of you shll chse thousnd: for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, s He promised you. (Joshu 23:10 nkjv) This word gives fith to my hert, s I hve been contemplting the possibility tht God might wnt me to become more engged in confronting the influence of feminism by promoting biblicl view of womnhood. I hve felt tht to do so would be to spend the rest of my life in the lions den nd to tke on bttle tht there is no hope of winning the enemy hs done such msterful nd thorough job of deception nd devsttion. But I m reminded of numerous situtions in which God plced His children in position where they were hopelessly outnumbered tht He might show them tht the bttle is the Lord s. If this is bttle of His choosing for me, then He will fight for me, He will conquer the unconquerble, He will cuse the wlls of Jericho to fll, He will defet the enemy, no mtter how numerous or deeply entrenched they my be. I don t hve in myself the bility, the courge, or the drive to tckle this mtter in the wy it needs to be done. But I cn t help but wondering, wht if this issue were crucil to bringing our genertion bck to God nd His Word? Wht if this is necessry prt of turning mny to righteousness in preprtion for visittion of God from on high? O Fther, I sk tht You would gurd my hert; protect/keep me from the evil one; gurd my mind. Help me to understnd Your hert, Your wys, nd Your Word. April 16, 1998 Sing, O brren one, who did not ber; brek forth into singing nd cry loud, you who hve not been in lbor! (Isih 54:1 3) The Holy Spirit quickened this pssge to my hert this morning. Are You wnting to mke me more fruitful? Are there steps I m to tke to enlrge the plce of [my] tent in preprtion for the blessing to come? Are You plnning to give me spiritul offspring? I envision countless women being set free from sin, self, pride, rebellion, nd bitterness relesed to love God with ll their herts, to love their husbnds nd children, to populte our spiritully desolte communities. December 2, 1999 This undertking would require: fith (lots of it!) dependence discipline God His clling, enbling, undergirding lunching out into the deep persevernce/endurnce scrifice I must know You re the One clling. And then, You must give me grce to sy, Yes, Lord. Send me nywhere, Lord; only go with me. Ly ny burden on me; only sustin me. And sever every tie, but the tie tht binds me to Thy service nd Thy hert. (Dvid Livingstone) Two dys go, I met with the FmilyLife tem in Little Rock to discuss the possibility of lunching rdio progrm for women. This thought hs been simmering in my hert for the pst couple yers, nd I sense the Lord is now pressing me to give it more serious considertion. Yesterdy I felt prompted to begin twenty-one-dy fst, s the Lord enbles, to seek Him on this mtter. My mind nd hert re flooded with multitude of thoughts s I contemplte this chllenge. I feel bit like Moses t the burning bush, telling God ll the resons I m not qulified to fulfill His cll nd fervently hoping He will rise up someone else for the tsk! Interestingly, like Moses, when I ws hlf the ge I m now, I hd ll kinds of spirtions nd self-confidence. But now, when it my be God s timing to thrust me out, I m filled with reservtions nd reticent to step out. Jnury 1, 2000 At your word I will let down the nets... [Peter] nd ll who were with him were stonished t the ctch of fish tht they hd tken. (Luke 5:5, 9) Fith in nd obedience to His Word pved the wy for the mircle. Futility nd fruitlessness gve wy to bundnce. As He is wont to do, Jesus didn t just give n verge (or bove verge) ctch. He demonstrted His gret power by providing n bundnt, overflowing ctch. Much fruit is the result of biding in Him of wlking in fith nd obedience. I don t wnt to settle for smll, predictble outcomes tht re merely equl to time nd effort expended. If nd 4 5

April 16, 2000 I will continue to wit on the Lord to confirm His leding through the Scripture, through godly counsel, nd through the unfolding of circumstnces. (Pslm 25:4-5 niv) For the first time tody (fter months of pryer nd witing on the Lord), I sense tht He is giving me the freedom to pursue developing rdio ministry. There hs been relesed within me this morning flood of ides in reltion to formt, pproch, etc., s well s pece nd confidence tht He cn enble me to do wht hs seemed like virtully impossible tsk (nd it is, prt from Him). He is giving fith nd cler-cut burden to rech women in this wy. Grnt, I pry You, much fruit for Your glory lone nd for the ske of Your gret kingdom. Acts 18:24 28 hs been my first biblicl light on the mtter. Among other things tht spoke to me in tht pssge, is Apollos mission sttement : [He] helped them much which hd believed through grce (v. 27 kjv). I long to come longside women who hve believed nd help them in their wlk with God. I hve no illusions bout this being esy or pin-free. To the contrry, I expect to be chllenged nd stretched beyond nything I hve experienced in ministry to this point. My 13, 2000 6 7 One mn of you shll chse thousnd, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, s He promised you. Therefore tke creful heed to yourselves, tht you love the Lord your God. (Joshu 23:10 11 nkjv) Lord, I wnt to live in the relm of the supernturl to wlk nd wge wr by fith. I m one very smll, wek, foolish, struggling, limited, wvering womn. But You re gret God. Nothing is too difficult for You. Fill me with Your Spirit nd use me for Your purposes nd glory. My prt is to love You, cleve to You, obey You, listen to You, follow You, nd be wholly vilble to You. Your prt is to fight nd win the bttles. My I not limit You by unbelief or by hert tht turns side from following You. My 20, 2000 As Judges 6 begins, we see Gideon s ferful mn s he hd good reson to be (vv. 11, 27). God delt with Gideon s fers by reveling Himself to be present, powerful God more powerful thn the Midinites. As
Gideon experienced the power of God, his fers grdully subsided. His trust ws trnsferred from humn strength, resources, nd options to divine ones. Before deling with the mtter of the Midinites, God directed Gideon to del with the root issue, which ws the idoltry of the Isrelites. Gideon ws to ter down the ltr of Bl tht his fther hd erected nd the grove tht ws by it. In their plce, he ws to build n ltr to the Lord nd offer scrifice to Jehovh on the ltr. God ws declring His sovereignty over ll other gods. He ws setting Himself forth s the supreme, living God, to whom His people owed their loylty, llegince, nd worship. I see here description of wht I sense to be God s clling in my own life, to throw down the ltrs of flse gods tht Christin women in our genertion hve erected flse, deceptive thinking; temporl vlues; immorl wys; self-centered living; etc. nd to build in their plce n ltr to the Lord, to declre His wys nd His right to rule over our lives. God s commission cnnot be ignored: Do not I send you? I probbly don t wrestle with fer s much s I do with feelings of indequcy, compring myself to more hevyweight contributors, nd wnting to sty bck on the threshing floor rther thn lunching out into the demnds of more public ministry. However, God s commission cnnot be ignored: Do not I send you? (v. 14). His promise is sufficient: I will be with you (v. 16). And His provision will be there s needed: the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon (v. 34). My 27, 2000 Dy twenty-nine of forty-dy fst. Am seeking the Lord for direction in reltion to mjor ministry decisions, including the possibility of lunching rdio progrm for women. My hert is t rest in Him; yet I feel pressed to inquire of Him. I hve so mny questions nd unknowns. (Yet ll is known to Him.) I know my highest/supreme/unchnging clling is to wlk with God, to love Him with ll my hert, nd to be conformed to the imge of His Son. Beyond tht, I need direction in reltion to the good works He hs prepred beforehnd tht I should wlk in them. Through the process of these pst months, God hs worked in my hert to mke me willing to be used in this wy (no smll chievement!) nd to instill fith in my hert tht He cn do this through me, in spite of my still-strong sense of indequcy nd inbility. As I hve pryed so mny times over the yers, I continue to pry: Led me, O Lord, in your righteousness... mke your wy stright before me. Send out your light nd your truth; let them led me. (Pslm 5:8; 43:3) I drove down to the lke tonight to red, pry, wtch the sunset, etc. Through ll of my Christin life, I hve known His clling: to lunch out into the deep; to wlk by fith; to mke His wonders, His beuty, His glories known, to the fullest extent possible to the ends of the erth. 8 9
As best s I cn her the Shepherd s voice, I feel I need to move in this direction to develop demos nd hve them evluted by spiritully discerning Christin leders nd rdio industry leders to give God the opportunity to show tht He is or is not in this. June 2000 Nncy plced cll to Bob Lepine of FmilyLife Tody, to tell him tht God hd confirmed in her hert tht she ws to proceed with the lunch of rdio ministry! She lter wrote in letter: As soon s I hung up the phone tht dy, with ter-filled eyes nd quivering voice I sng ll four stnzs of Lening on the Everlsting Arms. Over the next six months, the Lord forged prtnership between three ntionl ministries Life Action Ministries, FmilyLife Tody, nd Bck to the Bible tht linked herts nd hnds to begin this new ministry. As the leders of these ministries sought the Lord together on their knees, it ws decided tht Revive Our Herts would become the successor progrm to Elisbeth Elliot s Gtewy To Joy when she retired from rdio in the fll of 2001. Jnury 2001 Nncy recorded the first rdio progrms with thirty women in smll clssroom t Summit Church, in Little Rock. September 2, 2001 On the eve of the officil lunch of Revive Our Herts, I wnt to offer scrifice of prise to You, O Lord. Words cnnot express the gretness of Your grce nd mercy to me through this pst yer. I stnd in we of Your providentil hnd nd ll You hve done to bring this ministry to fruition. Wht wonder it hs been to see You t work, orchestrting ll the pieces in wy we never could hve done. Your provision hs been so fithful throughout this lunch phse. Dy fter dy ll I hve needed, Your hnd hs provided. Yet You hve kept me in plce of utter dependence. This clling is so fr beyond my nturl gifts nd bilities. My eyes re on You, O Lord. I wnt to be fithful servnt nd stewrd of wht You hve entrusted to me. You re ble help me to trust, to sty in the yoke with You, to rest in You, nd to serve You with gldness of hert nd in the fullness of Your Spirit. I consecrte myself fresh to You, O Lord. I m Your servnt set prt from the womb for You. All I sk is tht You would fulfill Your holy, eternl purposes in nd through my life. My my life bring You plesure. Set me free from bondge to the expecttions, prise, nd censure of men. My I live only for Your pprovl. My eyes re on You, O Lord. I wnt to be fithful servnt nd stewrd of wht You hve entrusted to me. I pry for wisdom nd supernturl enbling sufficient for this tsk. I sk for protection from every wepon the dversry forms ginst me. Gurd my hert. Keep it pure. Gurd my mind nd emotions. Sustin me by Your Word, Your grce, nd Your sweet Spirit. Fill me with Your Spirit. I pry for the mrk of Your presence for Your nointing on our feeble efforts. O Lord, would You be plesed to multiply the seeds we hve sown nd produce gret hrvest of revivl nd righteousness in the lives of women. How I pry for movement of Your Spirit tht cnnot be explined in terms of humn effort. Would You turn Your fce towrd 10 11
us, cuse it to shine upon us, nd turn the herts of women towrd Yourself. My You be mgnified through this ministry. Forbid tht I should tke ny credit or ccept ny glory for wht You do. My I wlk in humility nd contrite spirit before You. O God, from my youth you hve tught me, nd I still proclim your wondrous deeds. So even to old ge nd gry hirs, O God, do not forske me, until I proclim your might to nother genertion, your power to ll those to come. (Pslm 71:17 18) In Nncy s words: On September 3, 2001, Revive Our Herts went on the ir for the first time. For me, it ws the beginning of new seson of life nd ministry, one filled with opportunities for fith nd fruitfulness. As we celebrte our tenth nniversry, my hert is full of grtitude to the Lord for His incredible grce. His promises, presence, protection, nd provision hve been unfiling. I lso wnt to express hertfelt thnks for the fithful pryers, support, nd encourgement of so mny der friends nd ministry prtners. As we look to this next seson of ministry, my pryer nd tht of our tem is tht His strength would continue to be mgnified through our wekness nd tht His gret Nme nd sving grce my be mde known nd worshiped through our lives! A Converstion with Nncy on Revive Our Herts Tenth Anniversry As Revive Our Herts celebrtes ten yers on the ir, Nncy responds to severl questions regrding how this ministry hs impcted her life, some of the chllenges nd struggles she fces, how she finds encourgement in the midst of those chllenges, the vision God hs put on her hert for the future of ROH, nd how cring friends cn support her nd the ministry in pryer. How hs your life chnged since strting ROH rdio ten yers go? For strters, I hve much greter confidence in the Lord nd in His enbling, sustining grce nd power. At the sme time, I hve constnt, conscious sense tht I cn t mke it prt from Him (tht s good thing!). I hve seen more of my weknesses nd experienced more of His strength... more of my sinfulness nd more of His grce. I ve lerned lot (nd m still lerning!) bout relinquishing control nd letting the Lord nd others mnge things. As result of seeing Him come through on my behlf nd the ministry s behlf gin nd gin nd gin (we cll them Red Se moments ), I hve even more reson to trust Him nd less reson to doubt Him or to pnic or be nxious in the midst of storms. Not tht I never doubt or pnic I do! But my hert is stedied s I remember His fithfulness over these pst ten yers. 12 13
How do you decide wht to tech on ROH? I usully select topics or Scripture pssges bsed on either wht the Lord is teching me nd how He is working in my own life or n issue I sense needs to be ddressed s I listen to other women shre their struggles/burdens or red letters nd emils from our listeners. How do you go bout developing new series? Some of the richest series for me hve been birthed out of chnge I hve mde in my personl devotionl life. For mny yers I mde prctice of reding consecutively through the Bible t lest once or twice yer. This pproch hs been of gret blessing nd benefit to me I love getting pnormic view of the Scripture nd seeing how ech portion interreltes with other prts. However, in recent yers, I hve felt the need to slow down the pce t times nd meditte more deeply on smller portions of Scripture. So I hve spent months t time poring over nd pondering individul pssges such s Pslm 23, 2 Peter 1, the book of Hbkkuk, the Lord s Pryer, etc. I get immersed in the pssge, reding it over nd over nd over gin, memorizing it, meditting on ech word, phrse, nd verse (not only in my quiet time, but often throughout the dy), cross-referencing to other portions of Scripture, journling, sking the Lord to work tht portion of His Word into the wrp nd woof of my life. Once my mind, hert, nd life re sturted with one of these pssges, I usully end up developing rdio series bsed on the overflow of where I hve been living. After spending extended time doing personl medittion, I will pull out other commentries to shed dditionl light on the subject. Wht re the gretest chllenges you ve fced since strting ROH rdio? Mintining quiet hert nd personl intimcy with the Lord in the midst of the demnds of my dily schedule. Mnging my time effectively round His priorities nd gend. Fr too often, I look bck t the end of dy nd relize I ws busy ll dy with urgent demnds, but did not ccomplish the importnt things tht most needed to be done. There re lwys more opportunities, requests, nd demnds thn cn be humnly fulfilled. I hve to keep reminding myself of wht I hve sid to others mny times over the yers: There is time in every twenty-four-hour dy to do everything tht is on God s gend for my life this dy. Tht mens I need to be pryerful, tuned, nd sensitive to the Spirit, so I cn know wht is on His to-do list for my dy. I seek to be responsive to the work of the Spirit in my life. I struggle with the relity tht in so mny res of my life I know I m not consistently living up to the biblicl stndrd to which I m clling others. To be honest, sometimes I don t even wnt to live up to tht stndrd I get wery t times of lwys being spiritully vigilnt nd constntly wging wr ginst my flesh, the world, nd the devil. But in my hert I relly do wnt to be like Christ nd to glorify God. So I seek to be responsive to the conviction nd the work of the Spirit in my life nd to wlk in the light confessing nd repenting of sin s He revels it, receiving His forgiveness, nd pressing on by His grce. 14 15
There hve been significnt chnges in the Christin rdio industry in the pst ten yers (reflective of drift in the evngelicl world s whole). Though there re exceptions, it seems tht the industry s whole hs become more mrket-driven thn messge-driven i.e., mny decisions re being mde bsed on the question, Wht do people wnt to her?, rther thn questions like: Wht do people need to her? Wht is the messge tht needs to be communicted to this genertion? I hve to be sure I m willing to tke counter-culturl positions s the Lord leds. I hve to wrestle with these pressures in my own teching. I know tht certin topics re gurnteed to generte greter response (nd finncil contributions!). But I hve to be sure I m willing to tech on unpopulr subjects or tke counter-culturl positions s the Lord leds, even if tht mens we py price in terms of udience response. Wht re some of the gretest personl bttles or tempttions you fce? Allowing busyness to crowd out intimcy with the Lord. When I feel overwhelmed by dedlines (writing book, prepring for rdio recording sessions, etc.), I esily give in to discourgement nd doubt. I hve to consciously counsel my hert ccording to His Word nd choose to look t those chllenges from His perspective nd embrce them s necessry prt of the process of snctifiction in my life nd mens through which He cn be glorified. Lck of self-control in my use of time, physicl disciplines (diet nd exercise), my tongue, etc. I hve been studying this whole topic nd sking the Lord to develop this fruit of the Spirit in my life. Somedy I hope to be ble to tech on this subject on ROH nd hve life messge to bck it up! Wht re some of the things God uses to encourge you? I m mzed t how the Lord will sometimes prompt someone to cll or send me note of encourgement just when He knows I need it most. Hering bout people who pry fithfully for me nd for the ministry of ROH. My hert is infused with fresh fith nd grce when someone sys, I d like to pry for you nd does it right then nd there whether in person or on the phone. Hering testimonies of herts tht hve been revived nd lives tht hve been chnged s result of the ministry. Relxed mels (or phone converstions or wlks) shred with close friends who know me well, cre for my soul, know how to sk the right questions, nd don t think of me s public person! Sometimes wht encourges me most is just getting out of myself nd reching out to someone God puts in my pth who needs listening er, cring hert, or helping hnd. Listening to the preching/teching of the Word whether t church, online, through CDs, or t con ferences I m ble to ttend occsionlly. I sit nd listen with hungry, needy hert nd m never disppointed Christ-centered preching fills my cup nd fns the flme of my devotion for Him. Reding biogrphies of godly men nd women nd clssic devotionl books is lso gretly encourging. 16 17
I hve lerned to encourge myself in the Lord by meditting on specific promises from His Word nd ffirming tht they re true, regrdless of wht I my feel t the moment. How would you like people to pry for ROH? Pry tht the Holy Spirit will supernturlly noint our efforts nd work powerfully in the herts of women to receive nd respond to the truth of God s Word. Pry tht doors will remin open to proclim the truth of His Word through the irwves nd through other mens of communiction. Pry for wisdom s we think strtegiclly bout technologicl chnges tking plce nd determine how to best utilize vilble technologies to communicte the messge of revivl nd biblicl womnhood. Ask the Lord to show us how to rech younger women with this messge. Ask God to rise up like-minded women nd men to serve with us in this mission both s volunteers nd in full-time cpcity. Pry tht the Lord will rise up mny dditionl finncil prtners to support the outreches of ROH on regulr bsis. Pry tht some will be prompted nd enbled to underwrite ministry projects nd needs on lrger scle. How do you wnt people to pry for you? Thnk you for sking! Plese pry in reltion to the specific chllenges, bttles, nd tempttions mentioned bove. Ask the Lord to give me understnding into His Word nd to help me proclim the truth in wy tht is fithful nd plesing to Him. Pry I will serve the Lord with gldness. Pry I will wlk by fith nd will choose to believe His truth, rther thn being driven by my emotions or my circumstnces. Pry every prt of my life will be consistent with wht I proclim to others. Pry for fresh oil for divine nointing of the Spirit on my life nd ministry. Pry tht I will be filled with His Spirit, will mnifest the fruit of the Spirit, nd will wlk nd serve in the power of the Spirit. Ask the Lord to help me proclim the truth in wy tht is fithful nd plesing to Him. Pry for spiritul protection in the bttle, for endurnce in the rce. I wnt to run well for His glory ll the wy to the finish line. Where do you wnt to see the ministry ten yers from now? In the next ten yers, we wnt to expnd our vrious brodcsting, event-bsed, Internet, nd publishing outreches to see the following tke plce: A grssroots movement of Christin women who reflect the beuty of Christ, re filled with the Spirit, nd re committed to live out the implictions of the gospel in their homes, churches, workplces, nd communities. Women of purity, humility, love, fith, nd wisdom. 18 19
A widespred movement of women who re prying fervently individully nd corportely for genuine revivl in the church. Thousnds of locl church women s ministries structured, equipped, nd resourced to nurture nd trin godly women using biblicl models nd principles. A more intentionl, developed Titus 2 component to the ministry motivting, mobilizing, nd resourcing women to tech wht is good (Titus 2:3) to their children nd younger women. An integrted effort of bibliclly-grounded femle uthors nd spekers to shpe nd influence the lives nd thinking of Christin women. A more ctive presence in other lnguges, countries, nd cultures, including the bility to offer our resources to mny more women who do not spek or red English. We prticulrly hope to see fullorbed ministry to Spnish-speking women, both in the United Sttes nd throughout Ltin Americ.
