From the Director Shiawassee Chapter #3271 Publication 11 H.O.G. LOG Twenty- seven Chapter members didn't hesitate to ride to Washington D.C. to watch Flagman (Mike Bowen) run the final mile of his 58,282 mile trek that began 31 years ago. Flagman decided to run one mile in tribute to each fallen comrade in the Vietnam War. His mission began in 1982 when he attended the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Dedication. It ended at the Wall on Friday, September 20 th 2013. We all thank you Flagman for your dedication to the Vietnam Veterans, other Veterans, and to your next goal to run one mile in honor of every person killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks of 2001. On the "Red Apple Color Tour" in September, 38 members hopped on their Harleys to ride on some very nice country roads. Good weather made it a fun weekend for all of us. We stopped for lunch at Cheryl s Landing near Cadillac, then headed to Old Mission Lighthouse. The day ended in Traverse City at the Country Inn & Suites with a party in the courtyard. On the ride back Sunday morning we stopped for lunch at Cranker s Coney Island in Big Rapids. We also stopped at Anderson & Girls Orchards before heading for home. A special thanks and a hug goes to Doc & Monica Ritchie for hosting this event. The Thanksgiving Potluck is coming upon the 10 th. Elections will take place on this day for Director, Secretary, Activities Officer (*For 1 year to finish Steve Hall's term*), Assistant Activities 2 (Randy Kings spot), Editor, Photographer, Assistant Photographer (*For 1 year to finish Connie Cauchi's term*), AMA, Bereavement and Chaplain. If you are interested in one of these positions, contact our Secretary, Pam Long. The election for Head Road Captain will be held by the Road Captains at their November 4 th meeting. The election for Assistant LOH position was held by LOH members at their October 22 nd meeting. Looking ahead is our Chapter Christmas Party on December 14 th at the Candlelight Banquet Center. Tickets will be available from Dee Cotie, Steve Daniels and me. Tickets will also be available at Shiawassee Sports Center and at Chapter events. Continued on page 6 Random thoughts: Whatever other people think of you is none of your business. NOVEMBER 2013 Shiawassee Sports Center Ron Flore & Ken Galazin Sponsoring Dealer 11901 N Beyer Rd, P.O. Box 589 Birch Run MI 48415 Phone: 989-624-4400 2013 MILLION MILE CHAPTER CHALLENGE Unfortunately It s November and most of us will be parking our Harleys for the Winter.. Remember to check your odometer before you cover the bike for the season. Just turn in your miles to John Korff or Randy King before November 30th so you will qualify for your patch and rocker. Remember that both the rider and passenger on any bike will receive patches and/or 2013 rockers but only the actual miles each bike has traveled will count toward the Challenge. If all you were able to do this season was ride around the block that s fine: please report. Remember every mile counts. We will need every mile to make our goal again this year. It is really easy to turn in your miles. If you participated last year we probably already have your starting mileage. If we don t you just turn in your current odometer reading with your best estimate of how many miles you rode this year. When you park your Harley for the season just give John or Randy a simple note, call, or e-mail with your mileage info. The Deadline to turn in mileage is November 30th. So remember whether you ride a little or ride a lot every mile counts! Membership Renewal Time Membership renewal time is here. Yearly memberships run from December 1st through November 30th. Dues are $20.00 per year. Membership renewal forms can be obtained from Edith Cargill and at Shiawassee Sports Center. You can also fill them out or download them from the Chapter Website. There is also a form included in this Newsletter. A form will also be included in the December Newsletter. Don t forget that your National Membership needs to be current as well. Thank you very much for renewing in a timely manner. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Contact: Dee Cotie at 810-922-7571 Or bereavement@shiahog.com CONCERNING THE LOSS OF A FAMILY MEMBER Out of respect for the privacy of a Shiawassee HOG Chapter member that has suffered a family loss please allow that member or another immediate family member to inform the Bereavement Officer of the family s wishes. Dee will then have the correct information to distribute to the Chapter. Although we would all feel terrible for any oversight it would even be worse to post information a grieving family wanted to keep private. RULES OF THE ROAD For your safety and that of your fellow riders, your participation in Shiawassee Chapter riding events should be alcohol and drug free. Ride Safe & Have Fun! NEWSLETTER ADVERTISING Chapter members are welcome to place business card size ads in the H.O.G. LOG on a space available basis. The cost is $20.00 for three insertions. This is a great way to inform other members about your business as well as defray some of the Newsletter s cost. Please contact the Editor at editor@shiahog.com or by phone for more information. Guest Release Form A signed guest release form is required for all non-members and all minors under the age of 18 attending a Shiawassee Michigan Chapter riding event. In the case of a minor, only a parent or legal guardian may sign. The Activities Officers and Road Captains make these forms available at each event. Please plan ahead if you are bringing a minor and you are not the parent. You can acquire a minor s release form in advance from an Activities Officer, Road Captain or from our website www.shiahog.com (forms tab) and bring the signed form with you. H.O.G BUCKS After attending 6 Chapter events you receive your name tag. Wearing your name tag will let other members learn your name and get to know you. Another benefit is you will receive a H.O.G. Buck for wearing your name tag to Chapter events. From your Safety Officer It has been brought to my attention that some members have been having an alcoholic beverage while attending our rides. So this is a reminder that the policy of our Chapter and HOG is that rides are alcohol and drug free until the end. Remember this is our policy and has nothing to do with the law. Thank you for your cooperation, ride safe and have fun. Curt S. Chaplain s Message Thought---Our Lord has given each of us talents to be used for the Kingdom of God. Are we faithful to use what the Lord has given us? If not, why? Our Lord is faithful to use us according to His calling and gifting if we will allow Him to. We are held accountable to use what He has given us. Chaplain Rick 2

Please make sure that our Membership Officer Edie Cargill has your current e-mail address so you can keep up to date. People in our Chapter Don & Larry In 2008 Don Simon and Larry Battin took a trip along the East Coast. They traveled from Maine to the Florida Keys with a couple of friends. While there, they discussed their next trip for the coming year. Don said "The 4 Corners". Larry said we might as well do the 48 states. Their adventure didn't end there. In 2009 Don and Larry tied for 7th place in the USA & the World in Harley Davidson s ABC s of Touring. They accumulated 125 points that included: the Michigan Tour, Great Lakes Tour, 80 Chapter events, 48 states, 9 Provinces in Canada, the 4 Corners, Key West, West Quoddy Head Point Maine, Cape Flattery, Borderfield State Park, The Passport Tour, Leather Jacket Tour, Our Mystery Ride, the Gypsy Ride, Sturgess and Daytona Bike Week. Don put 40,000 miles on his bike, while Larry had 36,400 all in 1 year! They did this on their own, they were not dealership subsidized. It's amazing what you can come up with when you are in the Florida Keys, under a cabana drinking Martinis and planning another road trip! AH, the Life of a Bachelor! Your Historian Dale Parish 4
