STUDIES IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN LESSON 17 - JOHN CHAPTER 16 ASSIGNMENT READ John chapter 16. MEMORIZE John 16:33. These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. KEY WORDS The key words in this chapter are: trouble, joy, prayer, Holy Spirit. OUTLINE OF JOHN CHAPTER 16 A. Jesus warns of trouble, John 16:1-4. 1. Trouble from the people of the world. 2. Trouble from people who think they work for God. B. Jesus will leave the disciples and send the Holy Spirit, John 16:1-15. 1. Jesus would leave. 2. The Holy Spirit. 3. The Holy Spirit and His work in the world. 4. The Holy Spirit and His work in the believers. 5. The Holy Spirit honors Jesus. C. Jesus comforts the believers, John 16:16-28. D. Jesus overcomes the world, John 16:29-33. 1. The disciples believed. 2. Jesus warned the disciples. 3. Jesus overcame the world. LOOKING AT JOHN CHAPTER 16 A. Jesus warns of trouble, John 16:1-4. Jesus said, 1. Trouble from the people of the world. 1

These things have I spoken unto you. John 16:1. What did Jesus speak about in John 15:19? The people of the world the Christians. Why do the people of the world hate the Christians? 1) John 15:19 - the Christians are the. 2) John 15:21 - the people of the world do. This is what Jesus talked about. Why did Jesus talk about this? John 16:1 - So the Christians should be. What does it mean to be offended?. We help someone. We take Joe home so he will not get drunk. Then his friends come and say to us, If you take our friend away from us again, we'll beat you up. We wanted to help Joe but his friends were angry at us. How do we feel? Are our feelings hurt? If our feelings are hurt, we are offended. Jesus told his followers they should not be offended when the people of the world would hate them. In other words, we should not get angry when people hate us or are mean to us. 2. Trouble from people who think they work for God. In verse 2 we see another group of people who will be mean to the followers of Jesus. These people think they work for God. What will these people do? John 16:2 1) 2) (Synagogue is a name for the Jewish church.) The Jews thought it a great honor to belong to a synagogue. Only real bad 2

people were supposed to be put out of the synagogue. If anyone was put out of the synagogue, he was alone. He had no friends. No one wanted to have anything to do with such a person. What did the Pharisees say they would do with those who followed Jesus? John 9:22. What did the Pharisees do with the blind man Jesus healed? John 9:35 They synagogue. him out. They put him out of the The Pharisees thought they were working for God. Most of the disciples of Jesus ended up being killed. John was the only one not killed. He died as a prisoner on an island near Italy. What did Saul do? Acts 8:1-3. Who said Saul could take the Christians prisoners? Acts 9:14 the. Saul thought he was working for God. Ever since Jesus went back to His Father, Christians have had hard times. Some of the Christians were thrown to the lions. The lions would eat them alive. Others were tied to posts and burned. Many suffered in other ways, Hebrews 11:36-38. A few years ago some Christians who lived in South America were burned in their church. The people who hated them set the church on fire and would not let them get out. Even today some governments make it hard for many who love the Lord Jesus Christ. We are living in a country where people cannot do these things to us. We should be thankful for a government which protects us. Even though the people of the world cannot hurt us, they still do not like us. They do not want to be around us. They make fun of us. They tease us. They make it hard for us. The Christian religion was the largest religion in our country. Yet there are many people in this religion who have never trusted Christ as their Savior. Many times these people fight against the true 3

Christians. Why will the people of the world make it hard for Christians? John 16:3 Because they have nor Jesus. B. Jesus will leave the disciples and send the Holy Spirit, John 16:5-15. 1. Jesus would leave this world. Jesus was with the disciples for three years. Jesus led the disciples. He taught them. He helped them with their problems. But now my way to Me. (John 16:5). Yet, no one asked, Where are You going? Why did Jesus say this? Peter had asked, Lord, where are You going? John 13:36 (N.L.T.) Thomas also had said, Lord, we do not know where You are going. John 14:5 (N.L.T.) The disciples were like little children when they asked these questions. When we get ready to go some place, our children often ask, Where are you going? The children do not care where we are going. All they care is that we are leaving them. The disciples were not thinking about Jesus going back to His Father. They were thinking about Jesus leaving them. There was in their hearts, John 16:6. Jesus said it was better that He should go back to His Father. He would send the Holy Spirit. As a man Jesus could be only in one place at one time. The Holy Spirit could be everywhere. The Holy Spirit would be in the disciples. FATHER JESUS HOLY SPIRIT 4

2. The Holy Spirit. We have talked about the Holy Spirit in Lessons 15 and 16. The Holy Spirit is a person. Verse 8 says, when He is come. Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit as we would speak about a person. The Holy Spirit is God. He works with God the Father and God the Son. They are together and they work together yet they are one God. We call them the Godhead. They are also called a trinity. The trinity is like an egg. The egg is one egg, but the egg has three parts. These parts are the shell, the white and the yolk. Every person has a body, soul and spirit. But he is one person Jesus said, When I go to God the Father, the Holy Spirit will come to you. THE FATHER Jesus Holy Spirit disciples 3. The Holy Spirit and His work in the world, John 16:8-11. The Holy Spirit makes the world see sin, righteousness and judgment. 1) The Holy Spirit will make the world see sin. The Holy Spirit shows the people of the world their sin. What is their sin? John 16:9 That they do Jesus. in The Holy Spirit shows every person his sin. 5

a) Some people turn from their sin. They turn to God. They believe Jesus. They believe Jesus died for them. b) Some people do not turn from their sin. Even though the Holy Spirit shows them their sin, they keep on sinning. Usually these people become bitter. Their hearts become hard like stones. 2) The Holy Spirit shows the world righteousness. Righteousness is to be without sin in our lives. While Jesus Christ was on earth, the people could see the righteousness of God in Him, John 1:14,18. God showed His righteousness by punishing sin. He allowed His Son to take our punishment. God allowed sinful men to kill His Son. God raised Jesus from the dead to show the world that He was righteous, Acts 5:30,31. When we see how righteous Jesus Christ is, we can see how sinful the world is. Today the Holy Spirit tells the world about Jesus Christ, John 15:26. 3) The Holy Spirit shows the world judgment. The Holy Spirit shows the people of the world that there really is a judgment. The devil is the leader of sin, Ezekiel 28:15, John 8:44. He is called the prince of this world. When Jesus died on the cross He destroyed the power of the devil, Hebrews 2:14,15. Jesus judged the devil. Jesus took his power. Will his followers also be judged? Revelation 20:10-15. The Holy Spirit shows the people of the world the coming judgment. They should have fear of it. 4. The Holy Spirit and His work in the believers, John 16:12-15. 1) The Holy Spirit teaches the believers, John 16:12-15. God knows how hard it is for us to learn about Himself. We learn to know God little by little because He is so great. 6

Jesus knew that His disciples found it hard to learn. He knew that they would not understand why He had to die. That is why He said, I still have many things to say to you. You are not strong enough to understand them now. John 16:12 (N.L.T.) The disciples saw Jesus after the resurrection. Then they understood why He had died. Jesus died so they could have a new life. Now the disciples needed someone to teach them how to live this new life. The Holy Spirit would teach them, John 14:26. 2) The Holy Spirit leads the believers in all the truth. Many things in the world look to be true but are not. The Holy Spirit shows believers the. (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit leads the believers in all the truth. 3) The Holy Spirit shows the believers the things to come. The Holy Spirit showed the disciples the things to come. The Holy Spirit does the same for all believers. 5. The Holy Spirit honors Jesus, John 16:14,15. The Holy Spirit does not honor Himself. He Jesus. Jesus Holy Spirit believers What the Holy Spirit hears of Jesus He tells to the believers Jesus has all that God the Father has. What the Holy Spirit receives from Jesus He gives to the believers 7

The Holy Spirit makes known to us the message of Jesus like a telephone line carries a message from one phone to another phone. HOLY SPIRIT hears what Jesus says...........and.......... tells believers HOLY SPIRIT tells Jesus..................................... the prayers He hears from the believers ( Romans 8:16) C. Jesus comforts the believers, John 16:16-28. Jesus said, A little while, and ye shall not see me...... and again, a little while, ye shall see me. The disciples did not understand these words. They talked among themselves. Jesus knew they did not understand. He explained these words to them. A little while and ye shall not see me. He spoke of His death. What would the disciples do? 8

John 16:20 Ye shall and. They thought Jesus would be the great leader. They loved Him. When Jesus would die, they would see Him. He could not be their great leader. They would cry and have sorrow. What would the world do? John 16:20 They would. Those who hated Jesus would be glad. They would think they got rid of Jesus. They would think He was dead for good. A little while, ye shall see me. Jesus talked about the resurrection. The disciples would see Him again. What would happen to their sorrow? John 16:20 It would Would anyone be able to take this joy from them? John 16:22 Jesus said it was something like when a child is born. The woman has sorrow just before a child is born. But when the child is born the woman forgets the sorrow. Then she has because a baby is born. The disciples would forget their sorrow when they would see Jesus again. Did this happen?. What does John 20:20 say? Then were. Prayer. Jesus was going to the. The disciples could not ask for help in the same way they used to ask for help. When a child lives with his parents he asks them for help. Often he says, Dad help 9

me. Dad, show me how to do this. Dad, I need a new pair of shoes, can you buy me another pair? Mother, I am hungry. When the child grows up he may leave home. Can he ask his parents to help him the same way he used to ask for help? How could he ask for help?. He could write a letter. He could phone his parents and ask for help. When Jesus lived with His disciples they asked Him to help them. When Jesus would go to His Father, the disciples would have to ask in another way. Jesus told them how they could ask for help. How were they to ask? John 16:23,26. disciples ask name of Jesus in Father They were to ask the in the of. Why would the Father answer their prayer? John 16:27. Because the Father came from. them and because the disciples believed Does God love you today?. Do you believe Jesus came from God?. Will God answer your prayers too?. What do you get when God answers your prayers?. 10

John 16:28 Jesus came Father from to the the Father the world to the from world and He is going D. Jesus overcomes the world, John 16:29-33. 1. The disciples believed, John 16:29-33. Jesus often spoke to the people in parables (picture stories). Many times He explained these parables to the disciples. Yet they did not understand many things. Now Jesus spoke to them without parables, (John 16:29). Now the disciples were sure that 1) Jesus all things (verse 30). 2) Jesus did not need to ask people to tell Him things. He knew them. What did the disciples believe? (John 16:30) that from. 2. Jesus warned the disciples, John 16:31,32. Jesus asked them, Do. John 16:31. At this time the disciples believed. Would they believe a few hours later? Jesus 11

did not want the disciples to stop believing. That is why He told them what they would do. What would the disciples do? John 16:32 1) They would be, every man alone. 2) They would Jesus alone. Would Jesus be all alone? John 16:32. Who would be with Him? John 16:32. 3. Jesus overcame the world, John 16:33. Jesus wanted the disciples to know what would happen. Jesus wanted them to know so they would keep on believing in Him. Jesus wanted the disciples to know so they would have peace. When we do not know what is going to happen, we are afraid. We do not have peace. Did Jesus promise the disciples an easy life? John 16:33. He said they would have tribulation in the world. This means they would have much trouble. Were the disciples to be afraid?. They were to have. Were the disciples to be sad?. They were to be of cheer. This means they were to take hope. Why could the disciples have peace? Why could the disciples take hope? JESUS OVERCAME THE WORLD. When Jesus died on the cross, He DESTROYED the power of the devil, Hebrews 2:14,15. Jesus is STRONGER than the devil. Jesus has DEFEATED the devil. Jesus has OVERCOME the devil and the world. IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER Let us see what we remember about the Holy Spirit in Lessons 15,16, and 17.
