Revelation Part 4 Lesson 6 Review: What do you remember about Babylon from our study in Revelation last week? 14:8 Its fall is announced. 16:19 At the 7 th bowl, Babylon is given God s wrath. 17:5 Babylon the great Mother of harlots / prostitutes and of abominations of the earth Babylon is a literal city, but also an economic and religious center. It s a city of riches and demonic influence. 17:16 The beast and ten kings burn the city. 18:21 Babylon, thrown down with violence, will not be found any longer. We will be using chart on page 69: What Major Old Testament Passages Teach About Babylon DAY ONE NOTE: In Genesis 9:7 God commanded Noah and his sons, when they came out of the ark, to populate / increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it. What do we learn in Genesis 10-11 about Babel (Babylon)? Who founded the city of Babel (Babylon)? Genesis 10 8 Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD 10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel in the land of Shinar. Why did they build a city and a tower? What did they hope to do? Genesis 11 1 Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. 2 It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to one another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly. And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 4 They said, Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth. ßacting out of pride, with power, for protection What does the Lord say about the people? What do He do to them? 5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 The LORD said, Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another s speech. 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. 1

What do you learn from Isaiah 13 and 14 about the future of Babylon? (page 263) Isaiah wrote 739-681 BC before the Babylon captivity Isaiah 13 Read: bottom of page 63 and top of page 64 to learn the timing of Isaiah s writing. NOTE: Isaiah 13 is an oracle (a burden) about Babylon, about executing God s anger. Isaiah prophesied before the Babylonians began coming against Judah and Jerusalem. V1-5: Who is the Lord bringing against Babylon? V2-3 For what purpose? V3, 5 V6-16: We will discuss the day of the Lord next week. What do these verses say about the land (v 9) and the people? V17-22: What do these verses say will happen to Babylon? 17 Behold, I am going to stir up the Medes against them, Who will not value silver or take pleasure in gold. 18 And their bows will mow down the young men, They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb, Nor will their eye pity children. 19 And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. 20 It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation; Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there, Nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there. 21 But desert creatures will lie down there, And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches also will live there, and shaggy goats will frolic there. 22 Hyenas will howl in their fortified towers And jackals in their luxurious palaces. Her fateful time also will soon come And her days will not be prolonged. Verse 17 The Medes destroyed Babylon in 539 B.C. ; this destruction of Babylon by the Medes might picture what will happen at the end. Isaiah 14 V1-3: What is said about Israel? 1 When the LORD will have compassion on Jacob and again choose Israel, and settle them in their own land, then strangers will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob. 2 The peoples will take them along and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them as an inheritance in the land of the LORD as male servants and female servants; and they will take their captors captive and will rule over their oppressors. 3 And it will be in the day when the LORD gives you rest from your pain and turmoil and harsh service in which you have been enslaved, Could this refer to the resettlement under Cyrus? Or the Lord bringing Israel back to their land at the time of the 1,000 year reign? OR BOTH V4-23: What is said in Israel s taunt against the future king of Babylon? Again could this taunt be for the men who ruled Babylon during the time of the Old Testament or the future king of Babylon or maybe even the beast from Revelation? 2

DAY TWO page 64 (627-574 BC) Jeremiah prophesied shortly before /during Jerusalem s fall to Babylon; about 50 yrs after Isaiah. What does the Bible teach about Babylon and its future? Jeremiah 50 What do we learn about Babylon in the opening verses? 1 The word which the LORD spoke concerning Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, through Jeremiah the prophet: 2 Declare and proclaim among the nations. Proclaim it and lift up a standard. Do not conceal it but say, Babylon has been captured, Bel has been put to shame, Marduk has been shattered; Her images have been put to shame, her idols have been shattered. 3 For a nation has come up against her out of the north; it will make her land an object of horror, and there will be no inhabitant in it. Both man and beast have wandered off, they have gone away! NOTE the contrast between the outcome of Israel and that of Babylon, throughout this chapter Verses 4-7 talk about Israel What will be their relationship with the Lord? V5 they will ask for the way to Zion, turning their faces in its direction: they will come that they may join themselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten. Who is bringing Babylon down? How? 9 For behold, I am going to arouse and bring up against Babylon A horde of great nations from the land of the north, And they will draw up their battle lines against her; From there she will be taken captive. Their arrows will be like an expert warrior Who does not return empty-handed. 10 a Chaldea will become plunder; All who plunder her will have enough, declares the LORD. 11 Because you are glad, because you are jubilant, O you who pillage My heritage, Because you skip about like a threshing heifer And neigh like stallions, 12 Your mother will be greatly ashamed, She who gave you birth will be humiliated. Behold, she will be the least of the nations, A wilderness, a parched land and a desert. Why was Babylon being judged? 13 Because of the indignation of the LORD she will not be inhabited, But she will be completely desolate; Everyone who passes by Babylon will be horrified And will hiss because of all her wounds. 14 Draw up your battle lines against Babylon on every side, All you who bend the bow; Shoot at her, do not be sparing with your arrows, 3

For she has sinned against the LORD. 15 Raise your battle cry against her on every side! She has given herself up, her pillars have fallen, Her walls have been torn down. For this is the vengeance of the LORD: Take vengeance on her; How treated? As she has done to others, so do to her. REV 18:6 Verses 17-20 What had Babylon and the king of Assyria done to Israel? V17 scattered driven them away first who devoured him was the king of Assyria and this last one who has broken his bones is Nebuchadnezzar What will the Lord do to Babylon and to Israel? V18 I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land V19 And I will bring Israel back to his pasture and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan V21-27=What more do we learn about the punish the Lord will bring on Babylon? V21 slay and utterly destroy them V23 Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations V24 I set a snare you were caught while you were not aware you have been found seized WHY? V23 Because you have engaged in conflict with the Lord V29-32=What more do we learn in these verses about how Babylon is to be treated? WHY? 29 Summon many against Babylon, All those who bend the bow: Encamp against her on every side, Let there be no escape. Repay her according to her work; REV 18:6-7 According to all that she has done, so do to her; WHY? For she has become arrogant against the LORD, Against the Holy One of Israel. 30 Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, And all her men of war will be silenced in that day, declares the LORD. 31 Behold, I am against you, O arrogant one, Declares the Lord GOD of hosts, For your day has come, The time when I will punish you. 32 The arrogant one will stumble and fall With no one to raise him up; And I will set fire to his cities REV 18:8 And it will devour all his environs. V33-38=What is the contrast between Babylon and Israel? Verses 39-40=What is said about the final out come of Babylon? 39 Therefore the desert creatures will live there along with the jackals; The ostriches also will live in it, And it will never again be inhabited Or dwelt in from generation to generation. 4

40 As when God overthrew Sodom And Gomorrah with its neighbors, declares the LORD, No man will live there, Nor will any son of man reside in it. REV 18:21-23 Verses 44-46=What do we learn about the plan and purpose of the Lord? REV 17:17 DAY THREE Jeremiah 51 Verses 1-4=What is the Lord going to bring against Babylon? Verses 5-10 V5=What does the Lord not do to Israel? V6=What is Israel told to do? REV 18:4 Why?... the LORD s time of vengeance REV 18:20 V7=How has the LORD used Babylon? REV 17:4 Verses 11-14=What more is said about the LORD s purpose? Verses 15-23 V15-16=God as creator V17-18=worthlessness of idols V19-23=Jacob Verses 24-26=Why is the Lord against Babylon? V24 for all their evil that they have done in Zion REV 18:6-7 V26 You will be desolate forever REV 18:21 Verses 27-32=Who is the LORD bringing against Babylon? WHY? V27 Summon against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni and Ashkenaz V28 Consecrate the nations against her, the kings of the Medes WHY V29 for the purpose of the LOR3/6/17 against Babylon stand Verses 33-44 V34-35=inhabitant of Zion complaint against Babylon V36-40=the LORD will exact full vengeance V41-44=result of punishment Verses 45-51 V45=What does My people need to do? REV 18:4 V49=Why is Babylon to fall? REV 18:24, 19:2 Verses 52-58 52-56=Destroyer is coming against Babylon WHY V56 for the LORD is a God of recompense, He will fully repay REV 18:20 5

V58=What will happen to the walls and gates of Babylon? REV 17:16, 18:8-18 Verses 59-64=Calamity on Babylon V59=what is the timing of Jeremiah s writing? V61-63=What was he to do with the scroll? V64-why? DAY FIVE Zechariah 5 What was the time and setting of Zechariah s prophecy? POST-EXCILIC Many from Judah left Babylon to return to their own land and rebuild. The Medes and Persians were the dominant world power. Israel began work rebuilding the temple. What do you learn from this prophecy? Zechariah had two visions. Flying scroll Woman in ephah, approximately 1 bushel The scroll was the curse over the whole earth, curse for sin. The woman, Wickedness, sat inside a bushel basket. She was taken to the land of Shinar where a temple was to be built for her. Babel was in the land of Shinar, Genesis 10:10. When it s prepared, she ll be on a pedestal there. REV 17:3-5, 18:7 What are your conclusions about Babylon its past, present and future? What has that to do with us? 6
