The First Sunday of Advent November 30, 2014 11:15am

Welcome to Trinity Church. Please add your voice and heart to the worship: sing the hymns and pray the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together.

The Entrance Rite Prelude Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 645 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Rector s Welcome Introit Promesse de Dieu, Op. 438, No. 1 Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) Laude sterilitis quœ non paris: decantalaudem, et hinni quœ non pariebas: quoniam multi filii desertæ magis quam ejus quœ habet virum, dixit Dominus. Dilata locum tentoria tui, tuorum extende, ne parcas. Sing, O barren one who did not bear; burst into song and shout, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate woman will be more than the children of her that is married, says the Lord. Enlarge the site of your tent and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left, and your descendants will possess the nations and will settle the desolate towns. Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; do not be discouraged, for you will not suffer disgrace; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the disgrace of your widowhood you will remember no more. For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. Isaiah 54:1-5 Advent Litany standing Peter Hallock (1924-2014) God the Son, Redeemer of the world, Have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of the faithful, Have mercy on us. Holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity, One God, Have mercy on us. First organ interlude We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. 1

We have not loved you with all our heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven. Forgive us, O Lord. We have squandered the resources of your creation and been insensitive to the needs of generations yet to come. Forgive us, O Lord. Forgive what we have been, amend what we are, direct what we shall be, that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways. Forgive us, O Lord. Second organ interlude Help us to prepare your way, opening our hearts to the transforming grace of your word. Lead us in the way of John the Baptist, that our hearts may be open to receive the gift of the One who is to come. Prepare us, O Lord. Let us hear again the message of Gabriel and ponder anew the miracle of life. Prepare us, O Lord. Fill us, O Lord, with the desire to observe this holy season, so that we might come to the birth of your Son in joy and expectation. Prepare us, O Lord. Third organ interlude Your will is justice and respect for the dignity of all people. Your will is empowering love, giving us courage to bear the burdens of life. Remind us, O Lord. Your will is peace, comfort to the troubled conscience and hope for new beginnings. Remind us, O Lord. Fourth organ interlude 2

In all our life, O Lord, enliven our hopes, inspire our dreams, that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways. Keep us expectant, O Lord, to see new possibilities for life and ministry through the eyes of your Son. Lord, hear our prayer. Empower us to reach out in love to the forsaken, the destitute and the oppressed. Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for direction in our community of faith, for the ministry of laity and clergy, and all in authority in the nations of the world. Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for all humanity, for peace, for good-will among nations and for your spirit of love in our hearts. Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for all who are ill and those in trouble and adversity. Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for those who have died and all who are the vessels of God s grace in every generation. Lord, hear our prayer. Fifth organ interlude Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. The Celebrant prays a prayer based on the theme of the day. 3

The Word of God The Lesson seated Isaiah 64:1-9 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18 Sung by the Choir. Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock; * shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim. In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, * stir up your strength and come to help us. Restore us, O God of hosts; * show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. O LORD God of hosts, * how long will you be angered despite the prayers of your people? You have fed them with the bread of tears; * you have given them bowls of tears to drink. You have made us the derision of our neighbors, * and our enemies laugh us to scorn. Restore us, O God of hosts; * show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, * the son of man you have made so strong for yourself. And so will we never turn away from you; * give us life, that we may call upon your Name. Restore us, O LORD God of hosts; * show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. M. Haskel, based on Orthodox Chant Epistle 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Nicene Creed Said by all, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People are transferred to the Advent Litany on this day. The Peace standing Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The People offer a greeting of peace to one another. Announcements seated 5

Come, quickly come, and let thy glory shine, gilding our darksome heaven with rays Divine. Thy saints with holy lustre round thee move, as stars about thy throne, set in the height of God s ordaining counsel, as thy sight gives measured grace to each, thy power to prove. Let thy bright beams disperse the gloom of sin, our nature all shall feel eternal day In fellowship with thee, transforming day to souls erewhile unclean, now pure within. Amen. H.R. Bramley (1833-1917) The Holy Communion In the Holy Communion we experience the Real Presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and all adults and children who desire to receive Him are encouraged to come forward. Anthem The First Song of Isaiah Julian Wachner Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust in him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, and he will be my Savior. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation. And on that day you shall say, give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name; make his deeds known among the peoples; see that they remember that his Name is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, and this is known in all the world.
