10th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 5TH JUNE 2016 PSALTER WK 2 "Young man, I tell you to get up!" THE WORD THIS WEEK These Sundays of Ordinary Time will not appear every year, since the great solemnities of Pentecost, Trinity and Corpus Christi will displace them. So it can be a bit of an abrupt jump back into the pattern of readings for this season not readings chosen to celebrate a particular feast or mystery, but the Sunday by Sunday continuous reading of the Gospel and Apostolic Letters. So this Sunday we drop back into Saint Luke s Gospel with the dramatic story of the raising of the widow s son in the town of Nain. A theme that can unite the scriptures today is found in the psalm: For me you have changed my mourning into dancing. Our faith is that the death and resurrection of Jesus has changed death forever just as both Jesus and Elijah changed it in the stories read today. Christians will mourn the death of loved ones, just as Jesus himself wept over his friend Lazarus: but Christian mourning, while acknowledging grief, will also contain - in Jesus - the hope of dancing, the hope of life, the hope of resurrection, as revealed in the stories we hear today. Evangelisation is making Jesus known and loved and moving people towards a personal relationship with him as a disciple. During Lent a group of 12 people met each week to discuss a book by Sherry Weddell called Forming Intentional Disciples. The fruit of those prayerful discussions has been a plan which looks like this: From Pentecost to Summer time Deliver Alpha courses in our parish Review all our Catechetical courses to emphasise evangelisation first prior to catechesis relationship with Christ before trying to give the teaching of the Church. Maintain the focus on Discipleship through small groups; homilies and the language we use in our parish a gathering of Disciples. Follow up Deliver Alpha to a wider audience throughout Gorton Called and Gifted Weekends to help people discern their own calling. Life in the Spirit to help deepen personal relationships with God Increase in retreats; activities and groups that people can join to gain a stronger sense of belonging and support in Faith. CHURCH CLEANING At St. Francis Tuesday 7 th June at 1.30 pm All Welcome If another time is more suitable please see Mary Brennan/Winnie Byrne after Mass on Saturday 5

A Message from Fr. Derek McCartney Dear Parishioners, I'm Fr Derek, and I'm delighted to be joining you as your new parish priest. At present, I'm at St Mary's in Clayton-le-Moors near Accrington, but before that I was at St Anne's and St Brigid's in East Manchester, and so I know a little bit about the joys and challenges of ministry in your area. I can see from the parish website that there is a lot going on in the parish and I'm looking to working with you to strengthen the parish community and developing the links with the wider community, building on all the good work that you've done with Fr Andrew. A few details about me: born 1966 in N Ireland, ordained priest 1998 in London, first parish St Philippe Maroua Cameroun 1999, incardinated into the Diocese of Salford 2015. I love being a priest and as well as that my two big interests are cooking and walking. I especially like hot spicy food and my greatest walking achievement has been to complete the Camino in Spain in 2009, 500 miles in five weeks. I look forward to meeting you all in early June. God bless. Fr. D CLEANING In preparation for the arrival of Fr. Derek, we thought it would be a good idea to give the Church and outside space a good tidy and clean. If you are available on Wednesday 8th June at 10 am please come along and lend a helping hand (even if it s just for half an hour). If you have any queries please contact Frank Galvin/Ann Todd. Many hands make light work!! COMMUNITY CAFE The Cafe will be closed until 14th June 2016. New Opening Hours: Tuesday 9.15 am 12.30 pm Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9.15 am 1.30 pm COFFEE MORNING 5TH JUNE 2016 Jumble Sale Raffle Tombola All Welcome Tables available 5.00 Book in Cafe or call 0775 4487660 THURSDAY CLUB There will be no Thursday Club for the next two weeks 2nd & 9th June AFTER SCHOOL CLUB During the half term break there will be no after school club. 6

LORD GIVE US STRENGTH AND WISDOM AS A FAMILY AS WE WORK TO ENRICH OUR PARISH LIFE PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY BEGINNING DECEMBER 8 TH 2015 Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. ORDINATION TO SACRED PRIESTHOOD OF MICHAEL DEAS AND RICHARD HOWARD Saturday 16th July 12noon at Salford Cathedral followed by a buffet.
