The Lord s Prayer Deliverance Memory Verse of the Week: Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing FIRM in the faith. 1 Peter 5:8-9 Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil Matthew 4 Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted Matthew 26 Jesus prayed in preparation of His trial Father, do not (only) bring us into temptation, rather, (even more) deliver us from the evil one James 1:13-15 - When tempted, no one should say, GOD is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but everyone is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Temptation is a PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL matter---we need to apply healthy, physical boundaries and also allow Jesus to heal the deeper wounds and identity questions. What are Satan s tactics? Satan s GOAL is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10) and he accomplishes this through lies, doubt, false promises, temptation, shame, and separation (Genesis 2-3) What do we do when we face temptation? 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 Temptations are limited and God provides a WAY out. Colossians 2:14-15 - We hope and trust in Jesus VICTORY on the cross Ephesians 6:11-18 - The spiritual battle continues on, so we ready ourselves for war Belt of TRUTH- Focus on Jesus as Truth and His truths Breastplate of RIGHTEOUSNESS standing before God FEET fitted, Readiness, Gospel of peace - Prepared SHIELD of faith - Extinguish flaming arrows HELMET of salvation Protect our minds SWORD of the Spirit Know the word of God! PRAY in the Spirit - On all occasions! 1 John 1:8-2:2 - REPENT and receive grace when you fall Main Point: TEMPTATION is a reality and we are trusting God to lead us through it and deliver us from the evil one. We prepare for the spiritual battle by putting on the armor of God and resting in the victory that Jesus has won on the cross.
Group Breakout Armor of God Spend some time drawing a soldier wearing the armor of God. Make sure that you include all 6 pieces referenced in Scripture and keep in mind a Roman soldier. Once you are done drawing, write out and label each piece and explain in your own words what the 6 pieces mean. (Feel free to use your notes for the 6, but please use your own words!!!)
Group Breakout Get To Know Ya- What were your high and low points of the past week? Experiential Activity See above---students have their own pages to draw the armor of God. Help keep them focused and encourage them while drawing. Try to let each of them come up with unique explanations for the various pieces of armor. Application 1) Have each person show and explain their drawing of the armor of God. 2) What does it mean to put on the armor of God each day and how can we do this? 3) Which piece do you need most right now? 4) What temptations do you struggle with? Be honest---there is no temptation you have that is not shared by someone in this room or at your table! 5) How can you approach those temptations with practical physical solutions and also with deeper spiritual solutions? 6) What do you believe about evil? What have you been taught? 7) How active do you think Satan & demons are in the world? 8) What questions do you have about Satan & evil? 9) Have everyone pray! Pray against temptations, whether spoken or unspoken, pray against the evil one, and pray that God s Kingdom advances through you!
Family Time Family Time is meant to be an opportunity to get the family talking about spiritual things. Multiple studies show that parents and grandparents are the #1 faith role models in a child s life. We know life is busy, but we want to give you opportunities to grow together. A great time to do this is in the car, while eating a meal, or simply anytime you can enjoy together. 1) We talked about the unholy trinity (Satan, our sin, and the world) contributing to temptation--- explain how each of the 3 contributes a) Satan b) Our sin Weekly Memory Verse: Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith. 1 Peter 5:8-9 c) The World 2) Read James 1:13-15---Have each person respond with what this passage is saying Parent(s) Confirmand Sibling(s)/Other
3) How can we fight against all 3 forces that tempt us or can we? (See 1 Cor. 10:12-13) 4) Ask your parents what they believe about Satan, demons, and spiritual warfare and talk about the idea of being in a battle now. What can we do? (See Ephesians 6:11-18) For Further Study (An optional section for families that want to go deeper) Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and their subsequent fall, has radically altered the course of humanity. Our lives today and the struggles we face are a result of what took place then. Have each person, individually, read through Genesis 2-3. Then, discuss what stands out to each person. What tactics did Satan use? Why did Adam and Eve fall into temptation? What does this mean for our lives today? Brainstorm ways that you each person can combat temptation and then close in prayer. Pray against the evil one and that God would provide ways out of tempting circumstances! Your Name: (please print your name so we can read it) Parent Signature:
