~ The Divine Service ~ Rite I, The Bugenhagen Order THE SERVICE OF PREPARATION The first part of our service prepares our hearts to come before God. We do so through confession, and more importantly, we receive absolution, the complete forgiveness of all our sins. Opening Prayer O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ's sake. Amen Hymn 341, Awake, My Heart, with Gladness, verses 1-3 Confession of Sin Let us confess our sins to God and pray: We poor sinners confess to You, O God, not only that we have been conceived and born in sin, but also that throughout life we have often and in many ways offended You, our Lord and Maker, in thought, word, and deed, so that You could with perfect justice reject and condemn us for all eternity. Therefore we come before You with sorrow of heart, in dread and terror of Your holy justice and of everlasting death. Our sins are a grievous foe, which we should hate in every way as long as we live. O merciful God, You still grant us in this hour to be reminded of Your fatherly goodness. According to the promise of Your Word we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, and implore You, dearest Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your only-begotten Son, our brother, who was delivered up for our trespasses, and raised again for our justification: Forgive us all our sins through faith, which the Holy Spirit increases in our hearts to full assurance
We therefore pray You, O Lord, through Your servant, to declare to us the forgiveness of all our sins. We poor sinners are willing to forgive all who have offended against us. We earnestly desire to grow in true godliness. Help us, O God, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen Absolution Hear the holy and comforting Word of our Lord: Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Lift up Your hearts! By the authority of God and of my holy office I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
THE SERVICE OF THE WORD After being absolved of our sins, we enter the service proper. To show this physically, Pastor enters the chancel. God now comes to us through means of His Word. Gloria in Excelsis Deo Glory be to God in the highest. Salutation The Lord be with you.
Prayer for the day Let us pray: The pastor leads the congregation in prayer Old Testament Reading Job 19:25-27 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me! Psalm 81, selected verses Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob / Raise a song; sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp. For it is a statute for Israel / a rule of the God of 'Jacob. He made it a decree in Joseph when He went out over the land of Egypt / I hear a language I had not known: I relieved your shoulder of the burden / your hands were freed from the basket. In distress you called, and I de livered you / I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Hear, O my people, while I ad monish you / O Israel, if you would but listen to Me! There shall be no strange god in your midst / you shall not bow down to a foreign god I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt / Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son / and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now / and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. Epistle Reading 1 John 5:4-10 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He who came by water and blood Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that He has borne concerning His Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning His Son. Holy Gospel John 20:19-31 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you. And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld. Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see in His hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side, I will never believe. Eight days later, His disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them
and said, Peace be with you. Then He said to Thomas, Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in My side. Do not disbelieve, but believe. Thomas answered Him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name. Gospel Response Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father;
And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. Amen.
