Dear friends, We invite you to join us on our 10-day Reformation Tour in 2017 the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation as we walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther and other reformers and witness sites important to religious history. How exciting it will be to see Wittenberg where Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church, sparking the reformation! Visit Luther s birthplace and the house where he died, both located in the town of Eisleben. We will visit Erfurt where Luther went to school and see the Augustinian monastery where he became a monk. You will be able to visit the medieval Wartburg Castle, set on a mountaintop overlooking the city, where Luther lived in disguise and translated the New Testament into the German language. In the city of Zurich, we will visit key reformation sites including the Grossmunster, where Ulrich Zwingli preached during the early Swiss Reform movement; the Auld Stadt (old city); and the Guild Hall and Museum, which has displays and art from the Swiss Reformation. While in Zurich we will also visit sites important to the beginning of the Anabaptist Movement. We will visit Geneva, where John Calvin and John Knox carried on the work of reform. While in Geneva we will visit sites in the old town area, including St. Peter s Cathedral where Calvin preached, as well as other places in this beautiful city. Our tour also includes visiting numerous interesting sites while in historic Berlin, including Charlottenburg Castle, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the Reichstag Building, the Brandenburg Gate, remains of the Berlin Wall, and much more. We will visit the beautiful Swiss town of Lucerne and enjoy breathtaking scenery. Please take a look at the details in this brochure. In former Eastern Berlin, see the Brandenburg Gate at the end of beautiful Unter Den Linden Boulevard, Gendarmen Markt, the Berlin Cathedral, Alexanderplatz, the Nikolai Quarter, and the remains of the Berlin Wall. THU, MAY 11: BERLIN/WITTENBERG/ EISLEBEN/ERFURT Depart today for Wittenberg, the city where Luther s activities reached a high point. As a professor of philosophy and theology at Wittenberg University, he made his public appearance by nailing his 95 Theses against the misuse of the indulgence system to the door of the Castle Church, sparking the Reformation movement. Visit the Castle Church and see the Luther Monument in the marketplace and Luther s grave. Make a brief visit to Lutherhalle, his dwelling in the Augusteum which is now a museum of Reformation history. Drive to Eisleben. Visit Luther s birthplace, and see the house where he died in 1546 and 15th century St. Peter and Paul s Church where he was baptized. Continue south to Erfurt in the heart of Thuringia. the same day. (B) FRI, MAY 12: ERFURT/ EISENACH/RHINE VALLEY Visit the Augustiner Church and the Augustinian Monastery before driving to Eisenbach, a refuge for Luther during the stormy days before the Reformation. Visit Wartburg Castle, set on a mountaintop overlooking the city and one of the best- preserved German medieval fortresses. Continue to the Rhine Valley for the night. (B,D) SAT, MAY 13: RHINE VALLEY/ZURICH This morning drive south through the Black Forest region of Germany to Switzerland. Continue to Zurich for the night. (B) SUN, MAY 14: ZURICH Enjoy a tour of the key Reformation sites in the city. Visit Swingli s Church, the Grossmünster and admire the world famous Chagall stained glass windows. You ll have a stroll through the historic Auld Stadt (old city) and enjoy the Swiss heritage. Tour the Guild Hall and Museum, which has some interesting displays and art from the Swiss Reformation. View the Fraumunster, Zurich s famous Catholic Cathedral. Afternoon at leisure. (B,D) MON, MAY 15: ZURICH/LUCERNE/ GENEVA Depart Zurich and drive to nearby Lucerne to visit this charming town. After a visit, continue through beautiful scenery to Geneva. (B)
TUE, MAY 16: GENEVA It was here in Geneva that John Calvin and John Knox brought Christ s teachings to eager listeners. Our full-day tour will start at the waterfront, famous for its Flower Clock and English Gardens, and continue to the old town area, where we ll tour Cathedrale St. Pierre (St. Peter s Cathedral). This is where John Calvin preached and stoked the fires of the Reformation in Geneva, winning thousands to the Lord. You can see Calvin s chair (though you can t sit in it!). It s only 157 steps up to the top of the north Tower, where the view is worth the effort. Under the Cathedral are the ruins of Roman sanctuary, a 4th century basilica, and a 6th century church.
