SUMMER 2011 INSIDE THIS ISSUE New Autism book p.2 Letter from a family p.4 Notas de Amistad p.3 Church Partners p.4...and more! Maria Pacheco and Shirley Reitsma have been friends for many years and for the last ten years have attended the Friends Meeting Friends Friendship Group in Smithers/ Telkwa, BC. In December of 2009 the Friendship Group passed a collection bucket around at their meeting to buy items from the Christmas gift catalog of CRWRC (Christian Reformed World Relief Committee). They were able to provide mosquito nets, fish, goats, water filters, and a calf to help people in countries in Africa, as well as Honduras, Bangladesh, and Cambodia. This experience inspired Maria to think about ways she could save throughout the year in order to give to others. She came up with the idea that every time she used the treadmill at Shirley s home, she would save one Sharing God s Love with People who have Intellectual Disabilities FRIENDS EXERCISE THEIR GENEROSITY Maria and Shirley with the treadmill that helped inspire giving dollar to give at the end of the year to a worthy cause. In 2010, Maria managed to save $266.00 to help people in poverty and to provide Bibles for children who do not have them. The Friendship Group held another collection in December 2010, which amounted to an additional $320.00 to donate to CRWRC s Christmas gift campaign. The group gives the credit to God for willing and generous hearts. The more than 40 members of the Smithers/Telkwa Friendship Group report that in addition to giving, they enjoy singing, reading and learning from the Bible, playing games, sharing personal stories, asking for prayer, snack time, and doing crafts. Their favorite special events include a Christmas evening, picnics in the park, wiener roasts, games in the gym, and bowling. Group co-director Tina Veenstra adds, Everyone eagerly looks forward to each meeting and regularly attends. We have 7 local church denominations represented in our group and also members who do not belong to a church. Everyone is welcome and belongs at Friendship. Together we share the love of Jesus with each other. SUMMER 2011 1

Notas DE AMISTAD FRIENDSHIP FAMILY Ministry of Fragile Force II am happy to share that one of the first Amistad groups, named The Fragile Force Ministry, located in Guatemala City, is celebrating its tenth anniversary!!! This group was founded in February 2001 with 5 young people with Fragile-X syndrome, directed by Thelma Cajas. Fragile Force also contains a smaller group of young people, which they call Josué in honor of one of its founders, who is in the Lord's presence since 2002. This group develops different educational programs, including the Amistad Program, and other productive activities. I give thanks to God because: Luís Arturo Arias Echevarrieta Luis Alberto Díaz José Miguel Del Vecchio Andrew Brian Cajas Marco Daniel Cajas had the courage to be the founders of the ministry of Fragile Force, and now continue with more courage to blaze a trail in different areas. Dear friends, We have a 45 year-old son with Prader-Willi Syndrome. He was baptized in the Christian Reformed Church in Calgary. We are still so grateful and amazed for all the love, prayers, and support we received from our congregation. He was the first member of the Friendship group, having received three years of private instruction. This group has grown and increased to about 30, each having a Friendship volunteer. The Lord s Blessings are great and wonderful. Praise the Lord! With blessings and hope, The Dunnewold family Calgary, AB What s in a name Looking for a name for your ministry? S h a r i n g G o d s Love w i t h P e o p l FROM THE DIRECTOR A DIFFERENT WAY TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP! Building relationships is a key part of Friendship groups everywhere. Teaching, mentoring, and just hanging out together are some of the best things that happen during Friendship time. But there are other ways to expand relationships, even across international borders. The very first Ministerio Amistad program began at Jaguey Grande CRC in Cuba almost fifteen years ago. At that time, my congregation in Grand Rapids purchased the Amistad materials for them. We also collected money to purchase markers, construction paper, glue and other basic craft materials. These materials all went into a missionary s suitcase I suspect she flew to Mexico and then to Cuba with more craft materials than clothes in her suitcase! When she returned, she brought back some lovely handmade rhythm sticks, which we still use. Through Amistad, Jaguey Grande has continued to minister with seven deaf men. These men are now an integral part of that congregation. They take the offering on Sunday, and a man with cerebral palsy signs to them. Recently another couple from my congregation, Derk and Nancy Oostendorp, visited the church in Cuba. Before their trip they came to our Friendship program with pictures of Jaguey Grande. Because we don t speak Spanish and the Amistad program doesn t speak English, we needed to send something that would communicate with these seven men who do not speak at all. We decided to send them the banner created from the Expressing Faith in Jesus program by our friends who were baptized last June. We all This is the banner we sent to Cuba signed the back of the canvas banner and rolled it up to fit in the Oostendorp s suitcase. When Derk and Nancy came back from Cuba they brought greetings from the church and maracas for us. In Janaury, Derk returned to Cuba with Christmas cards we made for our friends at Jaguey Grande, and when he returned he brought us a silk banner they had created for us. Their church board sent a letter to our church board formalizing our relationship and letting us know how important this relationship is to them. We will soon do the same. Has your group ever considered expanding internationally? There are a number of Amistad groups that would be thrilled to befriend a group in the US or Canada we d love to introduce you! It s one more way to build Friendship. SUMMER 2011 5

For more Denim and Daisy Friendship Dinner This Friendship fundraiser promises to be a fun filled extravaganza evening. Our location? Beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Our hosts? Stonechurch Vineyards (owned by the family of long time Friend, Jessica Hunse). Nestled in the heart of Niagara s wine country, the evening will include a tour of the vineyard, a delicious meal, and an inspirational program. The setting alone will give you goosebumps! The intent of the dinner is to raise funds to grow Friendship Ministries Canada by at least eight new groups in the next year. With these funds, we will enable staff to attend conferences, to travel for speaking engagements, and to invest time to help large current groups split into two groups. Christian stewards are entrusted with wealth and resources as gifts in God s world, and charged to manage them in His best interests.
