True Spirituality Prayer for illumination: Please join me in prayer Introduction: This series is called Crazy in Corinth. The church in Corinth had some issues. One of them was divisiveness. They were divided over their leaders... 1 Corinthians 1:11 12 (ESV) 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, I follow Paul, or I follow Apollos, or I follow Cephas, or I follow Christ. They were divided in courts of law. 1 Corinthians 6:1 (ESV) 1 When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? They were divided about what they could eat and drink (chapter 8). They were divided during the lord s supper (chapter 11). 1 Corinthians 11:20 22 (ESV) 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord s supper that you eat. 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. This brings us to chapters 12-14 and Paul s next topic. The Corinthians Christians were also divided about what it meant to be spiritual. Some of the Corinthian Christians saw themselves as members of an exclusive club. How did one become a part of this exclusive club? By speaking in tongues. According to this elite group, varsity Christians spoke in tongues and JV Christians did not. They clearly thought they were better than everyone else. Paul was not pleased, even more importantly God was not pleased!!! This problem was so serious that Paul took three chapters to address it. Before he can specifically address the abuse of tongues in chapter 14 he lays down some theological foundations in chapters 12-13. This morning we will look at 12:1-11. In 1 Cor. 12:1-11, Paul answers one simple question. What does it mean to be truly spiritual? He gives three answers-

A truly spiritual person does three things. They- Test spiritual gifts Celebrate spiritual gifts Receive spiritual gifts First, a spiritual person tests spiritual gifts How do we test the authenticity of a spiritual gift? The Jesus test! 1 Corinthians 12:1 2 (ESV) 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Corinth was well known for its many pagan temples. Some of the Corinthian Christians came out of paganism. Some of them probably even visited the famous oracle at Delphi. Practitioners of the paganism popular in Corinth experienced demonic trances, ecstatic speech, prophetic oracles, pronounced curses, and spoke with the dead. The supernatural was normal. We get a glimpse of what this may have looked like in the book of Acts. Luke writes, Acts 16:16 18 (ESV) 16 As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and us, crying out, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation. 18 And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour. We see something similar in the OT when we read about King Saul s encounter with the witch of Endor. Illustration: A few years ago, I was in a room with someone who used to be involved in the occult and prostitution. She had been experiences significant demonic oppression. While a few of us prayed for her, she broke out in demonic tongues. How do I know it was demonic, you had to have been there just a few seconds later a deep male voice came out of her and said to me, I hate you and I m going to kill you. We kept praying and 30 minutes later she was totally restored to her right mind. Not all spiritual experiences are from God. How do we know which ones are? This brings us to verse 3. This is the Jesus test 1 Corinthians 12:3 (ESV) 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. Is someone is truly empowered by the Holy Spirit there is something they won t say and something they will say.

They will not say, Jesus is accursed. But they will say, Jesus is lord. Of course, anyone can say, Jesus is lord. But to say this, mean it, and live it, is the sign of being led and empowered by the Holy Spirit. To say Jesus is lord is to say that the crucified Christ has risen and now he reigns over the cosmos. He has no rivals. He is king of kings and lord of lords can you say that and mean it this morning? Application: Here is the principal If someone is truly spiritual, if they are truly empowered by the Holy Spirit they will honor and exalt Jesus Christ with their attitudes, actions, and words. 4:19) When the holy spirit invades our hearts at conversion he begins to form Christ in us (Gal. In other words, the burning desire of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Jesus. John 16:13 14 (ESV) 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Packer describes the Holy Spirit as the Shy member of the trinity he also argues that the Holy Spirit is primarily involved in a spotlight ministry. He is always pointing the spotlight on Jesus. Here is the test If the spirit is truly at work in someone Jesus Christ will be honored Illustration: The first great awakening refers to a mighty work of God in the first half of the 18 th century in this country. It was ignited by the preaching of George Whitfield, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Theodore Frelyinhouse, Gilbert Tennet and many others The Holy Spirit worked in powerful and profound ways. Thousands throughout the colonies were converted. But it was not all good. Pastor James Davenport caused quite a stir when he preached all kinds of crazy things happened and he attributed them to the HS. To resist these things, according to Davenport, was to quench the HS. One critic describing one of Davenport s meetings said that all order disappeared, some praying, some exhorting, some singing, some screaming, some crying, some laughing, and some scolding It was the most amazing confusion that ever was heard. (Marsden, 232) Others fell over, others moaned and groaned for hours, others did even stranger things. But was it authentic?

Jonathan Edwards was a contemporary of Davenport. He wrote a book to help Christians think through this question what is from the Holy Spirit and what is not from the Holy Spirit. Here is the title- THE DISTINGUISHING MARKS OF A WORK OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD, APPLIED TO THAT UNCOMMON OPERATION THAT HAS LATELY APPEARED ON THE MINDS OF THE PEOPLE OF NEW ENGLAND: WITH A PARTICULAR CONSIDERATION OF THE EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES WITH WHICH THIS WORK IS ATTENDED Edwards said, Tears, trembling, groans, loud outcries, agonies of body, or the failing of bodily strength, and ravishing visions did not prove anything. (Marsden, 234) The real signs of the spirits work were, love for Jesus, renouncing of worldly lusts and ambitions, a love of scripture, a spirit of truth, and true Christian love. (Marsden, 235) There are similar phenomena happening today. The cover story of CT a few months had this title, Is this real or is this revival? Inside one of the most popular and controversial charismatic churches today. The church is called Bethel and it is in Redding California. The author opens the article with these words, I have seen a man dance holding a translucent scarf, the fabric billowing around his spinning form like a garment made of stars. I have prayed for strangers healing from high-blood pressure and unspecified neurological disorders. I have wept with salt-faced abandon as four women prayed over me; I have walked through a fire tunnel ; I have seen a woman bob in Hasidic fashion over the Bible app on her smartphone. (Martyn Wendell Jones from CT) Speaking in tongues is not a sign of true spirituality Prophetic utterances Teaching to thousands Giving away millions Healing the sick. The mark of true spirituality is not giftedness but Christ centeredness Some of you cessationists may be thinking, Yeah that is right we don t need those crazy sign gifts. They don t prove anything. They just divide. Is this how Paul responds to the Corinthians? No! He corrects the abuses and then encourages the practice of the gifts. It does not matter how many gifts you have or what specific gift you have. If you are not increasingly centering your life on Jesus Christ and his mission and priorities you are not spiritual in a Biblical sense. This is the test. First, testing spiritual gifts. It is not enough to test spiritual gifts; this brings us to our second point Second, a spiritual person celebrates spiritual gifts Why should we celebrate spiritual gifts? They reflect the triune God!

1 Corinthians 12:4 6 (ESV) 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. Paul roots his discussion of spirituality in theology, specifically the theology of the trinity. Unfortunately, many of us think, I know I need to believe in the trinity to be saved, but I don t see how it is relevant for my life at all. This was not Paul s perspective. Paul did not think of the trinity as simply a doctrine to be believed, he also thought of it as a doctrine to be applied. In verses 4-6 Paul specifically applies the trinity to our discussion of spiritual gifts. Lets look at verses 4-6 again. Notice carefully what Paul writes starting in verse 4 there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit there are varieties of service, but the same lord there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God Paul mentions the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God. Whenever God is mentioned in the context of the Spirit and the Lord it means God the Father. God is the Father, Jesus is the Lord, and the Spirit is the Holy Spirit. God exists as three persons in one God. In the trinity, we see beautiful unity and diversity. One god (unity) in three persons (diversity). The church of Jesus Christ has the privilege of reflecting the same unity and diversity. How? There is one church but many gifts. All the gifts are equally important and valued. Just like the father, son, and holy spirit are equal in value. God gives one church many gifts to reflect the unity, diversity, and beauty of the trinity. The diversity of gifts flows from the nature of God himself. This is worthy of celebration. To celebrate the diversity of gifts Paul lists some of them in verses 8-10. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, (the word of wisdom and word of knowledge may be supernatural revelatory gifts or they may be non revelatory gifts). 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, (again this may be a supernatural gift of faith linked with the gift of miracles below or it could be something else). to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, (the gift of healing is just what it sounds like, God gives some people the gift to heal others, are others always healed? No) 10 to another the working of miracles, (broader than the gift of healing but similar) to another prophecy, (according to chapter 14 these are spontaneous spirit inspired words that must be tested). to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, (probably refers to the ability to judge prophecies as mentioned in chapter 14:12,14,29, 32 or could be the ability to judge between the Holy spirit and demonic counterfeit).

to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (could be private prayer languages or this could be known languages, more on this in chapter 14). I m tempted to stop at this point and analyze each gift. But, I won t. Paul is merely using this list of gifts to illustrate his point. There is a glorious unity and diversity in the body of Christ which reflects the trinity. Therefore, this list is not exhaustive or unique among the other gift lists in the NT. One god in three persons. One church with many gifts. Unity and diversity, diversity and unity. Application: This gets to the very heart of the Corinthian problem. The Corinthians are elevating tongues above the other gifts. What does this say about the trinity??? That Jesus is more important than the father or the spirit? We don t want to say that. That is dangerous. All the gifts are important. All the gifts are needed. All the gifts are given by one god to reflect the unity and diversity of the trinity. This means that we must use our gifts to promote unity and diversity in the body of Christ this is what a truly spiritual person does. A truly spiritual person Tests spiritual gifts Celebrates spiritual gifts Third, receives spiritual gifts Who specifically receives spiritual gifts? Every Christian! 1 Corinthians 12:7 (ESV) 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. In other words, each and every Christian is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Or even more simply put, every Christian receives a spiritual gift. This is a tremendous privilege. Under the Old Covenant only certain saints received spiritual gifts under the new covenant every member of the new covenant receives a spiritual gift. This was alluded to last week when I mentioned the quotation of Joel 2 in Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost. Application: If every Christian has a gift that every Christian is a minister Ministry is not only for the professional paid pastors. Every member of the new covenant has been given a gift to minister to others.

It is not the job of the pastor to do the ministry. It is his job to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:11). What gifts do you have and how are you using them to serve others? Ministry is about people. Who are you currently serving? Whose life are you currently speaking into? Is there anyone that you are helping grow in Godliness? Are you serving on a ministry team? How do I discover my spiritual gift? I don t place a lot of value in spiritual gift tests. Instead you should ask where are the needs great and the workers few (set up team, coffee, home group leaders, nursery workers, care for the poor, the single moms, serving at the UGM ladies shelter, etc ) Someone who has the spirit of Christ will want to be like Christ which means they will want to serve no matter what it costs by serving you will find out what you are good at and more importantly what others think you are good at. So jump in and serve. Who receives spiritual gifts? Every Christian! How does God decide what gifts we will receive? His sovereign will! 1 Corinthians 12:11 (ESV) 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. Paul repeats the overall emphasis unity and diversity but then he ends by pointing to God s providence. God does as he wills God gives gifts to whomever he wants according to his divine wisdom. He knows what we need and he knows what the church needs. Since God knows what is best we can rejoice in the gift God has given us. Have you ever wanted someone else s gift? I wish I could sing and play guitar or piano like so and so on Sunday morning!!! I wish I could lead home group like so and so!!! I wish I could give money like so and so!!! I wish I had the gift of prophecy or healing like so and so? Illustration: I recently read the biography of Martyn Lloyd Jones and the biography of George Whitfield. Both men were incredibly gifted preachers. A famous British actor said that he envied the way George Whitfield could say the word, Mesopotamia. He could make people weep by simply saying this word. When he was in his early 20s in the 18 th century everywhere he went there was never enough room to accommodate the massive crowds.

In one part of the biography I grew weary of reading, he went to this small town and 10,000 people showed up, in the next town 8,000 people showed up, and in the following town 12,000 people showed up. Great story about the man behind his plow hears about Whitfield and drops everything and then sees the massive cloud of dust off in the distance. Wherever he went in the colonies or in the UK everyone, literally everyone, for miles around dropped whatever they were doing and got to Whitfield s location as fast as humanly possible. He was the most well-known figure in the colonies until the American revolution. He preached on the Boston commons with Ben Franklin present to 30,000 people without a microphone. It was the largest crowd of people up to that point to assemble anywhere in the colonies. He often preached five and six times a day for months on end. Lloyd Jones was arguably the greatest preacher of the 20 th century. He had similar results. I have often thought, Lord why didn t you give me that kind of gifting? Answer God is sovereign. God has given all of us specific gifts for specific reasons and we should rejoice that he has given us anything. Are you being a good steward of God s gifts What does a truly spiritual person do? It has nothing to do with speaking in tongues. A truly spiritual person Tests spiritual gifts Celebrates spiritual gifts Receives spiritual gifts Conclusion: God gives us spiritual gifts not to prove how spiritual we are. God gives us spiritual gifts because he is gracious. The word for gift in our passage is the word charismata from which we get the word charismatic but more importantly the word charismata comes from the word charis which is the word for grace. What is grace? Grace is a gift (a free gift) we don t deserve. The greatest gift we don t deserve and cannot earn is Jesus himself. Romans 6:23 (ESV) 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Have you received this gift? Or are you still trying to earn it? (paying for a birthday present) God offers you Jesus freely?

Why would I want to receive this gift??? With Jesus comes forgiveness of sins, fellowship with God, joy eternal, and everlasting life. lets pray
