SAVE THESE DATES: Summer Camp: June 9-15 Annual Waldameer Picnic: June 16 VBS: July 22-26 (at St. John s) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Fifty days after Easter comes Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus disciples and moved them out in mission and ministry. This year, Pentecost comes on May 19th, and the day itself should be a festive celebration, with eight young people and over a dozen adults preparing to be confirmed or received. Please join us for the Bishop s visit, the confirmation service, and the reception following. We will hear how the Spirit was moving through the church two thousand years ago at our Pentecost service, but we are also trying to follow where the Spirit is leading us at St. John s today. A couple of new things are currently being sparked. First, a group of people are gathering to explore community needs for preschool, children s day care, and/or adult day care, and what St. John s might do to help meet those needs. If you are interested, contact me. Second, the vestry has voted to begin the Natural Church Development process here at St. John s. NCD helps churches figure out how to become healthier churches so they can grow and more effectively carry out their mission. Analogous to a person s checkup, NCD has a survey that looks at where the largest barriers to church health and growth might be. Then a team from the parish identifies a few ways to work on them, like a doctor might prescribe some exercises or medication. Now that St. John s has identified our purpose, principles and strategic directions, the NCD process can Parish summer office hours begin on Tuesday, May 28th 9am-noon (closed for lunch) 1-4pm Would you like to know what is happening at St. John s each week? We are sending weekly email updates called This Week at St. John s. This email will include Sunday s schedule of acolytes and servers, as well as the date and time of events in the week following. If you did not receive an email from us, but would like to, please email us at stjohns@stjohnssharon.org and tell us to add you to the weekly list. The updates will arrive to your inbox on each Thursday. Name: Email Address: 1 St. John s Episcopal Church Sharon, Pennsylvania 724.347.4501 Phone stjohns@stjohnssharon.org www.stjohnssharon.org 10

First Holy Communion 2013 help us carry them out. Some of you may be familiar with NCD s Three Colors of Ministry, which is one of the exercises that may be prescribed depending on a parish s particular needs. As we begin the NCD process in the coming weeks, more information will follow, or feel free to contact me with questions or interest. We have also been asked to host the Diocesan convention in November of 2014. While we will need many hands next fall, at this point we need one or two people to work with the Diocese on setting up some of the logistics. If you are interested, please let me know. Given the success during Lent, the Healing Team is going to begin offering Soaking Prayer on a regular basis. Please join us at the services to receive this ministry of God s love for yourself, and contact Deacon Randy if you are interested in praying for others. Finally, on another note, some of you are aware that there are fewer candidates on the ballot for City Council in Sharon than there are open seats. After prayer and conversations with the Bishop and Vestry, as well as some civic leaders, I have decided to run as a write-in candidate in the May primary. I believe this opportunity could be of benefit both to our city and to St. John s. Please pray for all our communities in the Shenango Valley and for the ministry of St. John s and our members to this area s revitalization and renewal. From Our Music Director The 2012-2013 season for the St. John s Adult Choir will come to a close on Trinity Sunday, May 26. A hearty thank you goes to members of the choir, who volunteer their time and talent week after week for the music ministry of our parish: Laura Jackson, Beth Krivak, Jane Trambley, Lily Trambley, Alice Williams, Kate Huff, Marge Johnson, Dorothy O Stafy, Laura Peretic, Lois Tamplin, Kevin Peretic, Bob King, Bob Kidd While the choir is off during the summer, we would like to organize special music provided by members of St. John s and perhaps by some visitors. If you are interested in providing special music during the 10 a.m. service, either as a singer or instrumentalist, please come talk with me or email me at frank@stjohnssharon.org. The Children s Choir will sing their final Sunday Eucharist on May 19 - Pentecost Sunday - joining forces with the Adult Choir in singing a setting of I m Going to Sing When the Spirit Says Sing by Ronald E. Anderson. The St. John s Children s Choir will wrap-up rehearsals on May 23rd. We had a fun and productive year thanks to the hard work of the children and the generosity of many parents and parishioners who provided dinner before each of our rehearsals. Thank you to all those who brought a meal you are much appreciated! We will be having our first annual Choir Dinner at the end of May. Members of the Adult Choir, Children s Choir and their families, as well as any volunteers who provided a Children s Choir dinner are invited to attend. This will be a time to celebrate and give God praise for another year of hard work and successful music making by the choirs. The date and time of this event are TBA. Soli Deo gloria, Frank Dodd From Our Youth & Family Minister It s that time again, when Sunday school and the school year are wrapping up. This year we had lot of great things going on; 7 kids took first communion, and we have 8 kids that are going to be confirmed this May, and another 4 that are graduating and going on to the next thing in their life. Now, even though the last day of Sunday School is May 19th, that does not mean that it is the end until next year. We have lots of things going on this summer; Youth Sunday is June 2nd, Camp June 9-15, VBS this year at St. John s is July 22-26 and there are many more things that will surely follow. This is also the time to start thinking about next year; what your plans are and in what ways you are going to be a part of St. John s. Youth Group Schedule for May/June May: Olympic fun center activity with SVYN TBA June 23rd: 4pm In-house meeting St. John s Other Events for May/June May 19th: last day of Sunday School June 9-15: Camp July 22-26: VBS St. John s June 2013 Newsletter: The deadline to submit articles for the June 2013, newsletter is Monday, May 20th. Camp Scholarships Church Camp is right around the corner. This year it will be June 9-15, and the cost for each child is $325. This may seem like a lot but it is actually a relatively low price for a week of camp. All year our Sunday School children work hard showing up each week for Sunday School to get a scholarship to camp and of course every year we do many fundraisers for some of this money though we are not able to raise all of it and are always looking for more ways to cover the opportunity for these great kids to meet and interact with other kids and have a great and wonderful camping experience. If you would like to help make these great memories please contact Father Adam, Tina, or Diana. Thanks. ECS is In Need of the Following Items: Pasta (all kinds), Pasta Sauce, Canned Soup, Canned Fruit, Canned Peas, Canned Green Beans, Pork & Beans You can place your donations in our collection cans which are located in the Narthex and in the parish house hallway by the stairs. Thanks for helping us to feed others. Many thanks to Emily Tice for $3.49 for Church Periodical Club and other folks for $20.07. Doddy Crawford for C.P.C. Treasurer s Report I m pleased to report that our pledge income is now in line with our budget for this time of year and our expenses are also in alignment. As part of Vestry I m excited to hear some new ideas for mission and ministries that St. John s can develop. Our parish is very blessed to have faithful contributors and as our ministries grow, so will the need grow for our spiritual and financial gifts. Please continue to pray for our church and I give thanks for your continued support of our parish and your gifts.
