Prairie View Christian Prep School Pastor Bill Wenstrom Teacher: Class: The 10 Problem Solving Devices Lesson 4 God wants your life to reflect the incredible inner peace that our Lord expressed under the extreme pressures of the Incarnation. When Jesus became flesh for you and I. He had to overcome every slander, persecution, stress and test that the world and the devil launched at Him. He pioneered a spiritual life now available to you and I, the Church Age believer. You can glorify God by learning and using His system. You know it would just be ridiculous for us to learn Bible doctrine and then not apply it when we need it most. You learn doctrine to use!! We are going to learn 10 problem-solving devices that will help you in you spiritual growth and help you to make decisions in your life so you can "run for the prize". 1. REBOUND: 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins He is faithful to forgive us our sin, and cleanse us for all unrighteousness. Rebound is essential to enjoying the spiritual life that God has given to each one of us at the moment of salvation. We cannot enjoy this spiritual

life unless we understand the principle of acknowledging our sins to God the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus. So Rebound by way of definition is the function of the believer s royal priesthood whereby he acknowledges any known sin to God the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is an emergency procedure for the believer to utilize when he falls into sin. Sinning is inevitable since we all still possess an old sin nature and volition. Sometimes we choose to sin. But we needed become discouraged because sin or become obsessed with not sinning, but rather we should rebound, forget those sins and keep moving on by applying the Word of God, thinking doctrine rather than about sin or committing any act of sin. Rebound is the only means to recover the filling of the Spirit. The filling of the Spirit is the mental state of the believer who has is not conscious of any known sin and is applying the Word of God to his thought process. We cannot access the spiritual life that God has given us at the moment of salvation. This spiritual life is eternal life that transcends time and circumstances. We share the life of Christ as believers. We are in union with Christ. The problem is that most believers do not experience that which is true of them positionally. We are rich, yet many times we don t live as though we are. We are kings, but many times we live our lives like paupers. This need not be the case. God wants to have a relationship with each one of us. We lose our fellowship with God when we sin, but we can regain it through rebound. Rebound is the 1 st problem-solving device that God has provided for every believer in union with Christ. So it is absolutely essential that we understand that without Rebound we can never have fellowship with God in time and we will be under His discipline for failing to deploy this problemsolving device. King David, a man after God s own heart, understood the principle of Rebound. David was under intensive discipline from the Lord because he fail to Rebound for a period of about 18 months. He almost died the sin unto death like his predecessor King Saul. The Lord brought in the prophet Nathan to bring to David s conscience the fact that he had sinned by raping Bathsheba, getting her pregnant, getting Uriah her husband drunk so that he would go into his wife, get her pregnant and thus cover up the fact that he had got her pregnant. Not only that but then David had Uriah, Bathsheba s husband put to death on the battle field. Nathan had to give a little story of the little ewe lamb in order to get David to come to his senses. Fortunately, for David he heeded the warning. Ps 32:1-5, "{A Psalm of David. A Maskil.} How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit! When I kept silent {about my sin} my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away {as} with the fever heat of summer. Selah. I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"; and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah." 2

David was under intensive discipline because he would not acknowledge his sins. This passage teaches that David s physical body was affected. There are 3 categories of Divine Discipline for the believer when he consistently stays out of fellowship with God: (1) Warning (Rev. 3:20; James 5:9) (2) Intense (Ps. 38:1; 2 Th. 2:11). (3) Dying (Jer. 9:16; 44:12; Phlp. 3:18-19; Re. 3:16; 1 Co. 10:13-14; Ps. 118:17-18; 1 Jo. 5:16). God disciplines us because we are His children. Discipline is never designed to hurt the believer but rather to get him to acknowledge his sin in order to regain fellowship with God. So by utilizing Rebound the believer avoids the discipline of God. There is no emotion involved with Rebound. There is no such thing as crying tears of repentance. So Rebound protects us from receiving discipline from God. Discipline from God is never designed to hurt us but rather to drive us to acknowledge our sins to the Father in Jesus name so that we can enjoy fellowship with God. 2. THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: The filling of the Spirit is unique to the church age. It is the mental state of the believer who does not have any unacknowledged sins in the stream of consciousness and is applying the Word to his thought process. It is not an emotion. It is one of the seven salvation ministries of the Holy Spirit. At the moment of salvation every believer is filled with the Spirit, but he loses it through committing personal sin. It is recovered by acknowledging any known sin to the Father in the name or, the person of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Jn. 1:9). Every believer in the church age is commanded to permit the Holy Spirit to control and influence his soul (Eph. 5:18). The filling of the Spirit takes place in the soul of the believer when he allows God the Holy Spirit to control and influence his soul. It is a dynamic whereas the indwelling of the Spirit is static meaning it never changes, it is eternal. The filling of the Spirit is the operational power of God the Holy Spirit, which empowers the believer to execute the will of God the Father. The filling of the Spirit enables the believer to be conformed to the image of the Lord Jesus Christ meaning to become like Him experientially in His death and resurrection. It enables the believer to become like Jesus Christ in thought, word and action or in other words, it gives the believer the ability to acquire the character of the Lord Jesus Christ. consciousness and is applying the Word to his thought process. It is not an emotion. It is one of the seven salvation ministries of the Holy Spirit. It enables the believer to become like Jesus Christ in thought, word and action or in other words, it gives the believer the ability to acquire the character of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Spirit performs the actions of personality: (1) Teaches (Jo. 14:26; 16:13-15). (2) Testifies or bears witness (Jo. 15:26). (3) Guides and Leads (R. 8:14). (4) Performs miracles (Acts 8:39). (5) Convinces (Jo. 16:7-8). (6) Restrains (Ge. 6:3; 2 Th. 2:6-7). (7) Commands (Acts 8:29). (8) Intercedes in prayer (R. 8:26). (9) He receives ascriptions of personality. (10) He can be obeyed (Acts 16:6-7). (11) He can be lied to (Acts 5:3). (12) He can be resisted (Acts 7:51). (13) He can be blasphemed (Mt. 12:31). (14) He can be be grieved (Eph. 4:30). (15) He can be insulted (He. 10:29). God the Holy Spirit has the same divine attributes as both God the Father and God the Son: (1) Sovereignty (1 Cor. 12:11) (2) Righteousness (Spirit: Psa. 51:11) (3) Justice (Neh. 9:20a; John 16:8-11) (4) Love (Rom. 5:5; 15:30) (5) Eternal life (Heb. 9:14) (6) Omnipotence (Rom. 15:13) (7) Omniscience (Isa. 11:2) (8) Omnipresence (Psa. 139:7) (9) Immutability (John 14:16; 1 John 5:7) (10) Veracity (John 14:17; 1 John 5:7). His deity is demonstrated by His Works: (1) Creation (Ge. 1:2; Ps. 104:30). (2) Inspiration of Scripture (2 Ti. 3:16; 2 P. 1:21). (3) Regeneration, illumination and sanctification (Jo. 3:5-8; Tit. 3:5; R. 8:11; Eph. 3:16-19). (4). The most familiar is 1 John 1:9. Rebound is essential to being filled with the Spirit. Rebound restores the Filling of the Spirit. There is no Filling of the 4

Spirit without Rebound. Rebound + the Filling of the Spirit = Spirituality (winner). Sin - Rebound = Carnality (loser) Rebound is a problem-solving device for the sins of the believer and is a descriptive term. It is a technique. Rebound is simply admitting your sins to God the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 1:9). God designs it so that the believer can bounce back from sin. 3. THE FAITH REST DRILL: By faith the believer applies doctrine logically while resting in God's promises. The Believer must first have a relaxed mental attitude. Then he can concentrate on the doctrines that pertain to his needs, restoring his divine-view point thinking. Then he can reach a doctrinal conclusion and take control of the situation. Since concentration on doctrine requires a relaxed mental attitude, the believer's mental attitude becomes a prime target of satanic opposition against the power of God's Word. People are all different and so their circumstances will be too. Some will have problems of arrogance, jealousy, bitterness, depression, or anger. But the most potent enemy of all is fear. Fear is a mental attitude sin that shuts down thought and makes doctrinal application impossible. If you're in a state of panic you can't think clearly. The difference between a brave man and a coward is that the brave man thinks under pressure and the coward does not. You can conquer fear with promises: 1. First, claim a Biblical promise 2. Then, apply a Doctrinal Rationale 3. Finally, reach Doctrinal conclusions take control of the situation Everyone is susceptible to fear, even mature believers. When fear catches you off-guard, you must quickly recover your mental poise, your ability to think and apply the doctrine in your soul. 5

Rebound is the first requirement and remember fear is a sin. Claim a promise "God works all things together for good." You need a solid rock on which to anchor your mental attitude. Apply a Doctrinal Rationale A. Foreknowledge God thought about you in eternity B. Predestination God designed a plan for you in eternity past C. Election God chose you for the privileged part of His plan D. Justification God could bless you now because you possess His righteousness E. Glorification God can bless you forever in heaven A rationale is a "reasoned exposition of principles, an explanation or statement of reason, a set of reasoned rules or directions." Reach a Doctrinal Conclusion "If God is for us, who can be against us? Rom. 8:31 "If God gave us His Son, He will also give us all things." Rom. 8:32 The Christian way of life demands thought! 4. GRACE ORIENTATION: Arrogance creates problems and humility solves problems. When you grasp God's grace policy and how little you deserve the inconceivable bounty He provides, your soul is humbled within. We have to learn humility the attitude for teachablity and problem solving. Grace is all that God is free to do for mankind on the basis or the work of Jesus Christ. It is a resource that can never be earned or deserved, but only received as a gift. We are saved by grace through faith, we grow in the Christian life by grace through faith. No one can work his way to God or earn God's approval through human effort. Paul, the former Pharisee who had been found "blameless" by the strictest standard of righteousness that had ever been 6

devised (Phil. 3:4-7), knew about trying to work his way to God. He understood how the legalistic mind sets itself against grace, refusing to accept the fact that in man there dwells no good thing (Rom. 7:18). Hebrews 6:1-2 tells us that human good is referred to as "dead works." At every moment we have two choices: we can trust in ourselves relying on our intellect and our strength and our goodness or we can take a realistic look at ourselves and see that our only hope is to trust in God and rely on the riches of His grace. #5 DOCTRINAL ORIENTATION: How can you concentrate on your obligations and enjoy a relaxed mental attitude when problems intrude on every aspect of your life? We need to think with the "mind of Christ" and apply that thinking to your circumstances. When you filled with doctrinal norms and standards, you rely on the Lord, make good decisions from a position of strength, and use the problem solving devices of spiritual maturity. Most of the pain in our lives is self-induced. The main reason we make stupid decisions and reject what God offers, only to jump on what Satan offers is that we lack discernment. The enemy is a master of illusion; he knows how to make evil look good and good look evil. Romans 12:21 tells us "Do not be overcome by evil" The prophet Isaiah issued an even harsher injunction to the people of his day: "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and clever in their own sight!" (Isa. 5:20-21) Good habits are just as easy to establish as bad habits. They come the same way; they come through repetition of decisions. 7

Bad practice leads to bad habits. Bad habits lead to bad character. The mature Christians have practiced making good decisions; they have established a pattern of personal self-discipline. Every day they work with the Word, every day they function in the energy of the Spirit. Every day they strive for higher achievement in the spiritual realm. So, they have the ability to judge between good and evil. Real knowledge is to have epignosis, experiential knowledge. "Discernment" is from aesthesis, a word that means "insight, perception, skillful application." It was originally used of common sense and the ability to make distinctions. The beginning of discernment is the practical application of the Word of God to life and the ability to make common-sense distinctions in life. #6 A PERSONAL SENSE OF DESTINY Do you recognize your personal potential in the plan of God? Do you have a sense of your spiritual destiny? With confidence born from a ripening spiritual maturity you can learn to live in the light of an eternally secure future. Adversity fades, and personal self-esteem blooms from a limitless relationship with the Lord. In Hebrews 12, he compares the Christian life to a race and Christians to athletes who, if they want to experience the ecstasy of victory, will have to endure the agony of training for and running the race. God has set before every Christian a race to run, a personal destiny in His plan. No one fulfills his destiny accidentally; it takes discipline, endurance, and focus on the goal to win the race. The author of Hebrews exhorts each of us to lay aside the sin that entangles us literally, the sin that so easily ensnares us. 8

Everyone's different. No two people are exactly alike physically, no two have the same personality, and no two people have the same sin nature. So, every believer has his own enemies. God does not hold us accountable for how someone else runs his race. He does hold us accountable for how we run our own. Our responsibility is to understand ourselves, to recognize the things that hinder or entangle us and to set them aside so that they do no keep us from finishing our race (Eph. 4:22-23). We must have endurance, we must press on. #7 PERSONAL LOVE FOR GOD THE FATHER: When you understand God's perfect essence and orient to His grace and Word, you become motivated by an attitude of admiration and reverence toward Him. You learn to conform to His precedent of virtue and integrity. This motivational virtue based on absolute confidence in the divine ability to care for you supports and sustains momentum for problem solving and courage in the face of adversity. Deut. 6:5, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your power. No one loves God by being ordered to love Him, but God never issues a mandate without supplying the means of compliance. Through spiritual momentum from the perception and application of Bible doctrine, we obey the divine mandate to love God. #8 IMPERSONAL LOVE FOR MANKIND: The honorable Christian lives by a code of honor. VIRTUE FIRST IS HIS MOTTO. He respects authority, loves God with personal love, and loves man with impersonal love. 9

At spiritual birth we enter the royal family of the Lord Jesus Christ, and He has given us His code of honor by which to live. 1. Respect the privacy of the royal priesthood. 2. Love all people with impersonal love 3. Recognize that all believers have a common objective 4. Build integrity; do no distort morality 5. Never assume that production is a means of divine blessing 6. Depend totally on the integrity of God 7. Remember that the honor code is for all believers. 8. More is demanded of the strong than the weak 9. Orient to authority 10. Reciprocate for the privilege of hearing doctrine taught The Christian way of life is a life of freedom (Gal. 5:1) Privacy is essential to freedom. The principle of the honor code, then, is "live and let live" (Rom. 14:7,8) This means abstaining from gossip, maligning, judging, character assassination, and evil speculation from rumors and hearsay. (Rom. 14:2,3) Impersonal love emphasizes your own integrity, which demands that you hold no grudge or resentment against anyone, especially other believers, who possess the same imputed righteousness of God that you posses (Heb. 13:1) God keeps each believer alive to advance to maturity in the divine dynasphere. You must submit to the authority of your pastor-teacher, but this also means that you must demonstrate courtesy, thoughtfulness, and sensitivity toward those in the congregation who may be at a different stage of spiritual growth (Rom. 15:5-7) Integrity is the standard of the royal family, superior to morality, which belongs to believer and unbeliever alike. The believer's integrity is rooted in the filling of the Spirit and in Bible doctrine. 10

Your talent, personality, intelligence, sacrifice, and all your ability never merit blessing from God. He blesses His own imputed righteousness in you. God recognizes only integrity, which is the standard of maturity attained through His power system. Production is a result of spiritual advance, never the cause. In order to depend on God, you must be intimately aware of His attributes through understanding Bible doctrine. You are carried to maturity by "thinking", thinking under the honor code principle. Right thinking creates right motivation and right motivation leads to right action (Rom. 12:1,2) The royal family honor code is not just for the brilliant or accomplished people. Simply because the royal code is superior to all other approaches to life is no excuse for arrogance. Remember, it is God's system, His honor code, not yours. We are all royalty, yet no two believers are equal. Even among royalty some are stronger and more advanced than others by virtue or their more consistent perception and application of doctrine. Arrogant people are weak, and the weak resent authority. But authority protects freedom (1 Pet. 2:13-18). Like human freedom, Christian freedom is not an isolated quality. Your freedom as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ is an important part of a system that includes free will, privacy, private property, and authority. God has delegated His authority to pastors (Eph. 4:11) and always protects His servants (Isa. 54:17). Christian giving is a matter of honor under the royal family's code of conduct. God measures giving by the motivation behind the gift, not by its monetary value (Mark 12:41-44). Thus, the honor code demands a generous attitude in return for benefits received (Rom. 15:26,17). 11

#9 SHARING THE HAPPINESS OF GOD: Does you happiness depend upon people, circumstances, or the details of life? Learn to have an attitude of optimism, confidence, animation, and joy in the face of adversity, stress, and pressure. When your spiritual life takes precedence over circumstances, you carry God's happiness with you as a constant companion. Although happiness is the ultimate objective of God's game plan, happiness is strictly a by-product. God's game plan calls for us to pursue truth. The shortcut to happiness is the long road to misery. Remember, Satan has no happiness to share. He creates a pseudo-happiness to lure people away from God's plan. As the ruler of the world, Satan has the power to provide pseudo-prosperity. Satan's most subtle and effective deception is religion. #10 OCCUPATION WITH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST: Are you always looking for a role model in life? You already have one! During the Incarnation, our Lord displayed impeccable, spirituality, faith-rest, grace and doctrinal orientation, fulfillment of His destiny, personal and impersonal love, and the happiness of God. Now, your mental attitude can reflect the ultimate problem-solving perspective through occupation with Him. 12
