ROAD TO EMMAUS The Harmony of the Old and New Testament INTRODUCTION - THE SEVEN P's Luke 24:27 "Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures." This is a three lesson introduction to the series of courses called Road to Emmaus. The intention is to have a course for each book of the Bible. As of this writing Genesis and Exodus are complete. Leviticus is being illustrated, and Numbers is under construction. Lesson A - Luke 24:13-35 Jesus opening the Old Testament to explain Himself. Lesson B - 1 st Corinthians 10:1-13 The Old Testament was written so that we would have examples to go by. Lesson C - Every course will expect you to find a passage in the book being studied to re-write into a prayer. Treasure Trek - The last couple of pages of this introduction is meant to be kept and referred to by the student in in some later courses. The New Testament is connected to the Old Testament in at least seven ways: (1) Persons of the Trinity: God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit behaved in the Old Testament just as they do in the New Testament. (2) Patterns or Types: The Old Testament has many "types" of Jesus Christ and a few of other prominent New Testament characters, chiastic and poetic parallelism. (3) Prophecies: The New Testament reports the fulfillment of many Old Testament prophecies, mostly with about the Messiah. Also prophesies of His 2nd coming appear in both Testaments and confirm one another. (4) People/Events: The New Testament uses the Old Testaments for examples, both good and bad, like a preacher might give sermon illustrations. (5) Principles: The New Testament uses the Old Testament to explain and justify the doctrines taught by Jesus and the Apostles. (6) Promises: The New Testament demonstrates that God keeps His word by showing how He kept the promises made in the Old Testament. (7) Prayers: Just like the woman at the well and the thief on the cross and others in the New Testament people talked to Our Lord throughout the Old Testament. 1 Persons 2 Patterns 3 Prophecies 4 People 5 Principles 6 Promises 7 Prayers The idea is the student will look for the logos or pictures associated with these 7 P's as the courses are studied. See pages 9 and 10 Suggested methodology for each lesson: 1. Fellowship (Save most of this for the end of class.) 2. Take prayer requests (Try to keep it from becoming a competition to see who has the most or the worst.) 3. Pray (The idea here is to leave our troubles with God so we can give His word our attention with a clear mind.) 4. Read the lesson text aloud from the Bible (You may want to do this one question at a time.) 5. Answer and briefly discuss the fill in the blank questions. Let those who prefer to listen, listen. My answers on the next page are just one opinion; you may have a better answer. 6. On the final Think & Pray question everyone should take a few minutes to pray over it and jot down their own thoughts before the discussion. This will give the Holy Spirit a time to speak. 7. Discuss your Think & Pray answers. Never force anyone to share theirs. As with the other questions, my answer is just one more opinion; you may have a better answer. 8. Close in prayer (It is best to call on others to pray, but try to get their permission ahead of time.) 9. Fellowship (Leave this as open ended as possible for the time and place you meet.) Depending on the number of people, each lesson is expected to take about one hour. Steps 4 thru 7 are about half of that. If you take longer, let each lesson take more than one meeting. If you take less time, extra questions are provided for discussion called For Further Thought. The Harmony of the Old and New Testament 1 The Seven P's

If you are not incarcerated you have permission to print and copy these course materials as much as you like as long as you make payment for their use and keep this page intact with the contents. This is not free, except to those who are in jail or prison, and although we are a ministry, we are not a non-profit organization. We expect to be paid, to help finance our ministry to the incarcerated. We suggest two different ways of determining the price. (1) Take up an offering from the students at the end of the course, and send it to us. OR (2) Pray about it and pay us what God tells you to send. Of course, we have designed the website so that there is nothing to stop you from just downloading and printing the course. If you think it is worth nothing, why are you using it? If you think God would have you take or teach this course and you have no money to pay for it, I urge you to reconsider. If God does not want you to use this course He might be trying to let you know that by withholding funds. Or He might have some other purpose, like teaching you to humbly ask somebody else to fund it. Or maybe something else, but if we worship the same God, He would not have you just take it without regard to our wishes. We hope to make enough money to continue producing and providing these lessons. If God does not bless this ministry with financial encouragement, we will take that as pretty strong evidence He does not want us to make any more of these lessons available. We prefer that you mail us a check, but you may also pay by credit card via PayPal. ROAD TO EMMAUS - The Harmony of the Old and New Testament - Introduction [B] Examples for Us Please read 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 [B1] Who was baptized? [B2] Who was their Rock? [B3] Why were these examples given to us? [B4] Who did they test or tempt? [B5] Who is to be extra careful? [B6] What does this passage tell us about our relationship with God? Think & Pray The Harmony of the Old and New Testament 5 The Seven P's

------------- ANSWERS ------------- [B] Examples for Us [B1] Who was baptized? All (1Cor 10:1-2) [B2] Who was their Rock? Christ or the Lord (1Cor 10:4) [B3] Why were these examples given to us? so that we will not desire evil things as they did (1Cor 10:6) [B4] Who did they test or tempt? Christ (1Cor 10:9) [B5] Who is to be extra careful? Those who think they stand (1Cor 10:12) [B6] What does this passage tell us about our relationship with God? No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it. (1Cor 10:13) Could it mean that studying the Old Testament is the way of escape from temptation? What can we learn from the examples of the people in the Bible? We will be looking at that in some detail. One interesting question that will often face us is this: Which people are good examples and which are bad? In 1 Corinthians 10:13 is a great promise. "God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it." We will be looking for other promises as we read through the Bible. What will happen in class? We will read selected brief passages of scripture and discuss them together. Only a fraction of the scriptures in the Bible will be read and studied in class. It is hoped that the students will read the rest of the scripture between classes, in order to better understand the context, but it is not a requirement. I expect us to average about nine or ten chapters a week with perhaps 20 or 30 verses studied in detail during class time. What is expected of you? What do you have to do to participate? How much you read and participate is entirely up to you. A wide range of options are available to you. If you like, you can simply show up occasionally and observe what we do and listen to what we say. No one will ever be called out or expected to participate in the discussions. On the other hand, you can read all of the scriptures that provide the context for our lessons and study associated commentaries as well. Then in class you can express your ideas and join in the discussions fully. Beyond the expectations of politeness we all have, there are no rules or requirements. Introduction - Revised 4/12/2014 6 ROAD TO EMMAUS

ROAD TO EMMAUS - The Harmony of the Old and New Testament - Introduction [C] Up Close & Personal: As a part of applying the Bible to our personal relationship with God we will practice using scriptures to pray to God. At the end of each Bible book lesson, you will be asked to select a passage from that book and turn it into a prayer. You will have an opportunity to share this with the class, but it will never be a requirement. I plan to always share mine. Since this is best learned by example, here is a sample of what I am talking about. Please re-write Ephesians 6:10-20 as a prayer. (You may substitute some other Bible passage. Yours does not have to be this long. You can just use a single verse if you like.) Ephesians 6:10-20 (Phrases in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS are quotes from the Old Testament) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, 15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, 19 and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. The Harmony of the Old and New Testament 7 The Seven P's

Here is how I re-wrote the exhortation from Paul to us in Ephesians 6:10-20 as a prayer asking God to help us to do what Paul says. This verse becomes 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, 19 and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. this prayer Lord, please help me to be strong. Give me a portion of your mighty power. Clothe me in your full armor, so that I might stand firm against the schemes of the devil. Help me understand that my struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Please, God, give me your complete armor, so that I will be able to resist in the evil day, and stand firm, doing all that is needful. Make me to stand firm, put on me the belt of Your truth, and the breastplate of Your righteousness. Prepare me with the Gospel of Peace so that my feet will be prepared to go where Your Spirit guides me. Put on my arm the strong shield of sincere faith in You, so that it will extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one's lies. Protect my mind with the helmet of your salvation, and put in my hands the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Lord, help me to remember to pray at all times in the Spirit so that I might be alert to the needs of those around me and diligent to pray for my fellow Christians. Father, I lift up to you those called into the ministry of the Gospel, that utterance will be given to them, so that they may open their mouths and make known the Gospel with boldness. Lord, help me remember that I also have the duty to proclaim your Gospel boldly. Amen. Introduction - Revised 4/12/2014 8 ROAD TO EMMAUS

Trek the Tremendous Treasure Trail Matthew 13:44 The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field." Look for these logos as you study the courses in this series. The idea is the student will look for the logos or pictures associated with these 7 P's as the courses are studied. See page 1. After the first four courses these reminders will not be included. Hopefully by then this idea will be understood completely Connection Illustration The New Testament is connected to the Old Testament in at least seven ways: (1) Persons of the Trinity: God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit behaved in the Old Testament just as they do in the New Testament. Deuteronomy 6:4 Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. 1 John 5:5-8Jesus Christ--He is the One who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water and by blood. And the Spirit is the One who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water, and the blood--and these three are in agreement. (2) Patterns or Types: The Old Testament has many "types" of Jesus Christ and a few of other prominent New Testament characters, chiastic and poetic parallelism. Romans 5:14 Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin in the likeness of Adam's transgression. He is a prototype of the Coming One. 1 Corinthians 10:4 They drank of the spiritual rock... and that rock was Christ," we know that the rock in the wilderness was a true type of Christ. (3) Prophecies: The New Testament reports the fulfillment of many Old Testament prophecies, mostly with regard to the Messiah. Also prophesies of His second coming appear in both Testaments and confirm one another. Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. John 20:25 So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord! But he said to them, Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. Look For: The Harmony of the Old and New Testament 9 The Seven P's

(4) People/Events: The New Testament uses the Old Testaments for examples, both good and bad, like a preacher might give sermon illustrations. Jonah 1:17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights Matthew 12:40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. John 2:19 Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. (5) Principles: The New Testament uses the Old Testament to explain and justify the doctrines taught by Jesus and the Apostles. Matthew 22:36-40 Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest? He said to him, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands. (6) Promises: The New Testament demonstrates that God keeps His word by showing how He kept the promises made in the Old Testament. Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith without having received the promises, but they saw them from a distance, greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth. (7) Prayers: Just like the woman at the well and the thief on the cross and others in the New Testament people talked to Our Lord throughout the Old Testament. Exodus 33:11 The LORD spoke with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his assistant, the young man Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the inside of the tent. Introduction - Revised 4/12/2014 10 ROAD TO EMMAUS
