The Deacon s Corner celebrating 50 years of the diaconate 1968 2018 Dear Folks, This is my favorite time of year church speaking. Spring is coming, despite the fact as I write this we are having our 3rd Nor easter (even though it is a wimpy storm!). But what I like the most about this time is that we are on the door step of celebrating the Pascal Triduum. That three day liturgical season that links the 40 days of Lent and the 50 days of Easter. For Deacons, Lent Triduum and Easter is the busiest time of the year with the Stations of the Cross, Eucharist Adoration, interviewing confirmation candidates, Palm Sunday, the chrism mass with Cardinal Tobin, Feet Washing on Holy Thursday, presenting the cross on Good Friday and the magnificent Easter Vigil. We deacons have a lot to do! In today s Gospel, we heard that Some Greeks had come to Philip and said we would like to see Jesus. When Philip told Jesus of the Greeks request he answered them saying, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. That is what these seasons mean to me, seeing Jesus in the Word and Sacraments and worshiping him. We celebrate our redemption and thank God for giving us Jesus to do that. The season of Lent ends and the joyful celebration of Triduum begins when we hear the words "We should glory in the cross... " at the beginning of mass on Holy Thursday evening. We look forward to and even anticipate the resurrection. The mood this evening is one of joy which is fully experienced at the Easter Vigil. God's plan for the world was revealed in Jesus Christ who took on human form so that he might "dwell among us." The very core of Christ's mission is to be found in his death and resurrection. By dying and rising God's Son broke the bonds of death and was restored to life. He passed through pain and darkness so that he might lead us to the fullness of light or our redemption. But what Jesus accomplished, his total self-giving is not isolated in the confines of history. The triduum liturgy is not only a remembrance of a past event, because the power of Jesus s actions remains; it continues on. So it is that through the liturgy we participate in Christ's victory over sin and death. What Christ did some 20 centuries ago has a presence, a power, an ongoing effect. It happens in us today, and it also looks forward to the future, to the time of Christ's second coming. Deacon Andy Golden Early Bulletin Deadline for Easter Issue The deadline for the April 1st Easter Sunday bulletin is this Friday, March 23rd by 12:00 Noon. New Leadership Needed for Community Sunday Ministry With a debt of gratitude St. Peter s would like to thank Rosemary and Gene Dunton for their many years of leadership of the Community Sunday Ministry. We are currently seeking new leadership for this ministry. This well-organized ministry needs a leader to coordinate the various groups who run Community Sunday once a month from September through June. The leader will provide instructions and details to those ministries, which are contained in the Community Sunday Ministry written guidelines. If you are interested in being the coordinator for this rewarding ministry, please email PastoralCouncil@saint-peter.org. Blessing of Easter Food Saturday, March 31 On Holy Saturday, March 31st at 1:00 PM, a Blessing of Easter Food will take place in the Chapel. The custom of blessing food for Easter arose from the discipline of fasting throughout Lent and the special Easter fast during the Triduum. Easter was the first day when meat, eggs, and other foods could again be eaten. Swieconka (sh-vee-soon-kah) is one of the most enduring and beloved Eastern European traditions. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter food are brought to the church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood, the typical Easter evergreen. Special pride is taken in preparing a decorative and tasteful basket with crisp linens, occasionally embroidered for the occasion, and just enough boxwood and ribbon woven through the handle. Observing the foods and creations of other parishioners is one of the special joys of the event. Please join us by bringing your baskets of meats, breads, baked goods, eggs, chocolates, and jelly beans for a blessing. JustSteps: Catholic Social Teaching St. Patrick s Day and its Social Justice Connections About 40% of the world celebrates St. Patrick day, according to History.com. But most don t know the social justice connections or the roots of social activism connected both with the saint and with the holiday. St Patrick was a victim of human trafficking. Born in Britain (Wales) in the 5th century, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland when he was 16 and made a slave. He escaped 6 years later and began to preach Christianity across the country. Before the former black slave Sr. Josephine Bakhita was canonized and named the patron of human trafficking, St. Patrick was under serious consideration for the title. After the Great Potato Famine in the mid-1800s (itself a brutal injustice committed by the British), 1 million poor Irish Catholics escaped to America, again according to History.com. Though they were vilified and persecuted here as well, they found strength in numbers with the freedom to organize. They united to create voting blocks called the green machine that gave them political power. In recent years, the parade itself has been questioned by some, because of the sin of racism of the Irish against blacks and their history of being slaveholders in America. Over the years, many groups have been allowed to march in the Parade except for gay and lesbian groups, who first applied for permission to participate in the 1980s. In recognizing their civil rights and universal human dignity, that injustice changed last year. Congratulations! Congratulations to all of the kids that participated in this year's CYO program and THANK YOU to the parents for volunteering their time to coach and help out in other ways. A special congratulations to the 5th Grade Girls team for finishing undefeated and winning their league championship! Thanks to all that volunteered to make the season possible. Your time and dedication is very much appreciated. 3x your impact! Through March 31, Amazon is tripling the donation rate on your first smile.amazon.com purchase!
