David and Jonathan Bible Verse The Lord sees into the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7) Did You Know? Jonathan, Saul s son, and David have become very good friends. They have made a covenant between each other to be friends and to follow God. Jonathan even gives David his robe, sword, armor, and belt to protect him. In giving David these items, Jonathan indicates that he knows he will never be the king following his father. Saul is growing more paranoid every day. Even though Saul sends David on missions, he does not really expect that David will be successful. But when he is, Saul has no choice but to recognize his achievements. Remember, David has been anointed as the next king, but Saul does not know this. What we see is Saul declining and David rising. Jonathan is in the middle. We also see that God is with David. God has rejected Saul and Saul s actions. Throughout this story we see how both David and Jonathan are loving and serving God. In spite of knowing that David is in danger, Jonathan s friendship with David does not end. They remain friends until the very end. Older elementary-age children understand friendship. What they may struggle with is how Saul could treat David so badly. Help them to understand that Saul was not well and that he really did not serve God anymore. SAY: Today s Bible story is found in 1 Samuel 18:1-5 and 20:1-42. Let s read together about David and his friendship with Jonathan. This month we have a poster that shows every story. SAY: I wonder what it was like to be friends with Saul s son Jonathan. I wonder if I could have been friends with Jonathan. I wonder what it was like to David to be successful but still find disfavor with Saul. I wonder how it felt for David to hear from Jonathan that his life was in danger. I wonder how God is working in this story. GROW STRONGER FRIENDSHIP PINS Supplies: Leader Guide p. 47, large and small safety pins, small pony beads, bowl Place the beads into the bowl. SAY: Jonathan and David were friends. Jonathan gave David his cloak and they promised to stay friends. When David was in danger Jonathan worked to protect him. Friends are very important to our lives. We are going to make friendship pins today. Each of you will get 2 safety pins. There should be a bowl of pony beads in front of you. Use the beads to create a pattern on four of the small safety pins, then copy that pattern on the second set of four small safety pins. Thread each set of four small pins onto a large safety pin. Remember you need to make sure you can close the pins. The idea is to keep one of the pins for yourself and to share the other pin with a friend. If time permits you can make several friendship pins. LEARN AND SERVE WITH THE DEEP BLUE KIDS Supplies: Leader Guide p. 48, Class Stuff pp. 10, 23, Bible Stories & Stuff session 2, passports from session 3, markers, colored pencils, chenille stems, yarn, zip-top bags Hang the Mission Poster (Class Stuff p. 10) and Guatemala Poster (Class Stuff p. 23). Copy Worry Dolls ( Leader Guide p. 48) for each child. SAY: Now that we have arrived in Guatemala, we need to make sure to indicate this on our passports. Let s all take out our passports and on the first page fill in the information about where we are. Draw something that will remind you of Guatemala. We are also going to make Worry Dolls. Guatemalan children keep their worry dolls in a special bag or box. Each night before going to sleep the children take out their worry dolls and tell one concern or worry to each doll. The worry dolls are then placed under the child s pillow until morning. The worry doll is supposed to keep the child s worries so the child can sleep well. We are going to make our own worry dolls. You will need 2 chenille stems, yarn and a zip-top bag. Follow the instructions on page 48 to create your worry doll. Decorate your zip-top bag with markers and make sure you put your name on the bag. Once the bags are decorated, you can put your worry doll in the bag and take it home with you to share your worries with Fall 2017 Session 7 deepbluekids.com 45

each night. We have a handout with all the directions for making the worry dolls. Remember, you can also share your worries with God each night before you go to sleep. Your prayers are important to God. Hand out Bible Stories & Stuff session 7. SAY: We are also going to read from Bible Stories & Stuff and learn more about traveling and making new friends. Let s read together. FRIENDS Supplies: mural paper, markers Hang the mural paper on the wall. SAY: Friends are important in our lives. Friends help us to show love to others and they help us to be our best. What are makes a friend the best? How are you a friend to someone? With the markers, write words or draw pictures on the mural paper that help us all remember what it means to be a friend. WORSHIP PRAYER AND PRAISE Supplies: Adventure DVD, Bible Stories & Stuff session, CEB Kids Bible, DVD player, TV or projector with screen, table, fabric for covering table, candle, cross on table Set up your worship center with the table, the fabric over the table, the cross, and the candle. Play Dance Like Crazy and invite the children to the worship area, while singing along with the Adventure DVD. TIP Do you have kids waiting to be picked up? Check out the memory game at deepbluekids.com SAY: Our anchor point for this month is we can love and serve God. As we light our candle for worship, we will think about what it means to love God and to serve God now as children and then throughout our lives. (Light the candle.) SAY: We are going to close our time out together today with a prayer. Before we pray, are there any prayer requests? (Give the children time to respond.) PRAY: Gracious God, thank you for our friends. Friends help us to show your love to others around us. Amen. SAY: Remember to take home your Bible Stories & Stuff for session 7. 46 Deep Blue Older Elementary Leader Guide Session 7

Friendship Pins Supplies: You will need 8 smaller safety pins and 2 larger safety pins per child, and a bowl of small seed beads. Open up each of the four smaller safety pins. Thread 4 beads on each pin in designs of your choosing. Then close each of the 4 safety pins. Open the larger safety pin. Thread the coiled hole of the 4 smaller safety pins onto the larger pin. Close the larger safety pin. Then copy your same pattern on the second set of small safety pins and thread them onto the larger safety pin. The second pin, the friendship pin, is now ready to share. When you share your pin, open the larger safety pin and pin to a shirt or shoestring, then close the larger safety pin. (NOTE: when finished and pinned to a shirt, the beaded pins are pushed to one end. And be careful when taking it off, as the four beaded pins can easily fall off.) Fall 2017 Session 7 deepbluekids.com 47

Worry Dolls Supplies: chenille stems, yarn, marker, zip-top bag You will need 2 chenille stems, yarn, and one zip-top bag per child. Fold each chenille stem in half, hooking them together and twist each about 1/4 of the way from the middle, in opposite directions. Then spread out the bottom chenille stem for legs. Fold the ends up to create feet. Fold one side of the top chenille stem into a circle for a head back to the twisted body and fold the second side of the chenille stem backwards along the twisted part (see illustration), The two ends of the top chenille stem will form the arms. Create hands by making a small circle with the ends of the chenille stems. Wrap the yarn around the body of the doll, then down and up one leg and then the other. Wrap the yarn around the body and crisscross over the arms and down and up each arm. You will have a round circle of folded chenille stems for the head, held in place by the yarn. Using several small lengths of yarn, thread each piece through the open circle of the head and tie them into a knot around the chenille stem, creating strands of hair. Trim the yarn to make it the same length and spread it out. Decorate your zip-top bag with markers and make sure you put your name on the bag. Once the bag is decorated you can put your worry doll in the bag and take it home with you to share your worries with each night. 48 Deep Blue Older Elementary Leader Guide Session 7
