Thank you to everyone who attended our Fall Festival Tricky Tray!!! Parish Christmas Giving Tree Maureen Connor and Theresa Weber, Co-Chairs Last year, thanks to your love and generosity, we donated over 700 gifts to children and adults in our community and beyond. The Christmas Giving Tree will be in the Church and Walsh Hall beginning Thanksgiving weekend. The tree will be adorned with the gift requests and wishes of those who rely on help during the Christmas season. This year, we have received a request for Gift Cards to various stores in the amount of $25. While a gift card may not be the most fun gift to give, they are great ways to help out families at Christmas time. They allow parents to buy more personal items for their children (underwear, etc) and items for their homes (appliances, bedding, etc). They also allow teenagers and young adults to purchase things that fit their unique styles and tastes. We ask that you again be as generous as possible to help make Christmas a wonderful time for these children, teenagers and adults in need. Helping those in need is simple, but very much appreciated: 1. Take a tag from the tree, 2. Purchase the requested gift (gifts should be new), 3. Wrap the gift and securely place the tag back on the gift, so that we can get it to the appropriate person. If it is a gift card, please be sure to put the amount on it. 4. Return the gift to the church by Sunday, December 13, to allow time for sorting and delivery. This year your kindness will help children and adults from the following agencies: 1. Adopt-a-Family of Nutley 2. Children in Foster Care 3. Covenant House, NJ 4. Special Young Adults of Nutley 5. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark 6. York Street Project of Jersey City 656 Page 4
I am the alpha and the omega the one who is, who was, and who is to come, the almighty. Revelation 1:8 The readings during the past few weeks have centered on the end-time or second coming of Christ. In last week s gospel Jesus for-told a time of tribulation. The Son of Man would return coming in the clouds with great power and glory. (Mark 13:26) Today we hear similar words from the book Daniel. As the visions continued during the night I saw one like a son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven. I Daniel 7:13 (Today s readings begin on page 230.) For centuries people have attempted to determine when the end-time will occur. Human tragedies such as the turmoil in Paris and natural disasters cause spikes in such activity. Those who subscribe to these theories, attempt to draw connections and causality between scripture and such events to support their ideas. The purpose of my commentary is neither to prove nor disprove such theories. Instead, I offer the teaching of the Church taken from the Revelation 1:8. (See the top of this article.) Based on Christ being both beginning an end offers one certainty: at each moment in time humanity exists somewhere in between beginning and the end. Thus, our focus should not be on the when, but on the how. It s not when is the end coming, but how we should will live at this moment in time. The Solemnity of Christ the King is the final Sunday of the liturgical year. It is like a gateway that connects us to the next part of the journey. Consider this journey in a cyclical (rather than linear), fashion. One way to illustrate this might be the orbit of the earth around the sun. While the earth retraces a similar pattern each year; slight variations cause it to move gradually yet inexorably closer to the sun. Christ the King connects and culminates all that we have celebrated this past liturgical year: Jesus birth, suffering, death and resurrection. It offers us one more turn on the liturgical wheel and the opportunity come closer to the Son and the kingdom he initiated. Wishing you peace and calm during turbulent times, Religious Education Events Tonight (5-7:30pm) - 7th Grade Faith Night in Walsh Hall Tuesday, November 24 - Religious Education Class Sunday, November 29 - No Religious Education Class - Have a Happy Thanksgiving Tuesday, December 1 - Religious Education Class & 1st Penance Parent & Student Class Thursday, December 3- Confirmation Class Sunday, December 6 - Religious Education Class P.S.: I am grateful to be able to serve you here at St. Mary's. Thank you also to you, the community of St. Mary s for your kindness and patience. Pre-Cana at St. Mary's Parish Last Saturday, St. Mary's Parish hosted a Pre-Cana Life-Skills Day for over 50 engaged couples from the Archdiocese of Newark. The couples listened to talks about Communication, Finances, Family Life, and Intimacy from married couples from our parish and our parish priests. They also had the chance to share with each other about those important topics. The day concluded for the couples with the chance to pray with each other, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and attend Mass where they received a special blessing. We would like to thank, Rich & Monica David, Marlon & Coco Cadag, Carl & Linda Lordi, Joseph & Rosalinda Palombini and all those who assisted in making this day a success by sharing their gifts and talents with these couples. We ask for your continued prayers for all those who are preparing for marriage that they may share Christ's love with one another and be examples of that love for all to see. 656 Page 5
