St Mary s Newsletter Issue : 29 Wednesday 11 September, 2013 Dear Parents, Vatican II tells us that the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life (Lumen gentium, no.11; cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1324). As Catholics, we believe that Christ Himself is present in the Eucharist in a most sublime manner. The Eucharist should be central to the spiritual life of every baptised Catholic as a source of Faith, Hope and Charity. Vatican II also promoted Eucharistic participation by all members of the community. The key paragraph of the Sacrosantium concilium (SC), The Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy, called for people to be led to that full conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the Liturgy (SC14). To promote active participation people should be encouraged to take part by means of acclamation, responses, psalmody, antiphons and songs, as well as by actions, gestures and bearing. (SC30). On Saturday night I was privileged to take part in a most beautiful Family Mass at St Mary s. The children read the readings and responses; a simple children s choir led the songs as well. Their beaming joyful participation was infectious as proud parents, grandparents and parishioners also joined in with full, conscious and active participation. There were so many St Mary s families present with little babes in arms, toddlers moving in the aisles, with older siblings caring for the little ones, parents listening intently to their children s words and actions, with the full parish community united in beautiful Eucharistic prayer and thanksgiving to our Lord. It was a special night as everyone participated with community joy and love together. Full, conscious, active participation is the key to the Eucharist as the source and summit of Christian life. I wish to pass on my appreciation to the organising committee and I look forward to the next Parish family liturgy. Congratulations to all! New 40 km Speed Zone for Lower Campus Parents are advised that the Warwick Council has approved our application to have the speed limit reduced around the Lower Campus (Percy Street) Entrance. A new speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour has been put into action between Acacia Avenue and the Percy Street/Palmerin Street roundabout. I wish to sincerely thank Melinda Gale for bringing this safety matter to our attention and the P & F for your immediate action and campaign. Personal Safety In the lead up to the school holidays, it is important to remind students about staying safe over the holiday period. Here are some tips to discuss with your child around personal safety, particularly around being approached by someone they don t know: Teach your child the power of NO! when asked to go somewhere or keep a secret. Don t assume your child will know what to do have the conversation with your child. Try not to have a sole focus on stranger danger strangers to a child often means someone who is mean or scary looking. Sometimes a person may appear friendly, and may be persuasive enough to gain the confidence of your child. Rather than focusing on never talk to strangers, consider also talking to your child about people who are safe to talk to, such as Unformed Police Officers, or going to a safe place like a shop counter if they are lost or feel unsafe. Tell your child that no-one should ever invade their personal space. Talk about trusted adults an activity that can be useful is asking your child to draw around their hand and write down on each finger a person they could talk to if they don t feel safe (or point to each finger and talk about it if they have difficulty writing) Notices Together, we can support the safety of everyone s children.
