Divine Mercy Sunday Today s Readings First Reading: Psalm: Second Reading: Gospel: Readings for the Week The community of believers was of one heart and mind (Acts 4). Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118). Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God (1 John 5). The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. (John 20). In this Sunday s Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that [e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God (5:1) what we might refer to as being born again. Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! Pope Francis April Prayer Intention The Holy Father s April prayer intention is as follows: For Those who have Responsibility in Economic Matters That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to open new paths. 8 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: The Archdiocese is truly blessed by the services of many holy and dedicated priests, especially our retired priests, who have served our Archdiocese so faithfully. We currently have over fifty retired priests, many of whom continue to serve in our archdiocese in many ways. The annual retirement collection on Good Shepherd Sunday, April 21-22, 2018, is used to support the medical and retirement expenses of these priests. Your participation in the collection is a way to say thank you to our retired Archdiocesan priests for their many years of service to us, the Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. I assure you that your support will benefit the priests for many years to come. Please join me daily in prayer for vocations to the priesthood that others may follow in their footsteps to give their lives to be good shepherds in leading the flock of Christ.
