St Mary s Parish, Bennekerry Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday 18 th October 2015 The Common Tasks The common tasks are beautiful if we Have eyes to see their shining ministry. The ploughman with his share deep in the loam; The carpenter whose skilled hands build a home; The gardener working with reluctant sod, Faithful to his partnership with God These are the artisans of life. And, oh, A woman with her eyes and cheeks aglore, Watching a kettle, tending a scarlet flame, Guarding a little child there is no name For this great ministry. But eyes are dull That do not see that it is beautiful; That do not see within the common tasks The simple answer to the thing God asks Of any child, a pride within His breast: That at our given work we do our best. Askea Senior Citizens Celebrations Askea Community Group / Senior Citizens. Askea Parish Community Group are celebrating 25 Years together. In 1990 when Askea became a new Parish, the Community Group was started. We helped out with various things in the parish and until the Parish Centre was built we used to have a cuppa after Mass in the prefabs. The idea of having something for our Senior Citizens was discussed and, when the Parish Centre was built our monthly nights out started and from having 12 / 15 people we now have over 80 members. Along with monthly nights out we now have two holidays every year, a Christmas Party, and Easter and a Summer Day Trip. Our October Night Out on Wednesday 28 th October will be a celebration of that twenty five years. We are inviting as many members as can to come to our October Night Out starting at 6.45pm. We will have a bless and Prayer Remembrance for our deceased members with Bingo, Music and a cuppa to follow. As it is near Halloween we will have a Halloween Fancy Dress competition. Proceeds from the night will be given to a local charity. Please let us know if you are coming to our night as we need to know numbers for catering. Contact Marian at 059 91 43010 by 23 rd October. Military Tunic A lost guardian angel. Sitting on the edge of the world. I follow the cracks of the sidewalk, my trolley and I. My home on the corner of every mission street. My tin coffee cup starts off with caring heartbeats. My only possession is the icon of war, with six buttons missing. Navy and white my grandfathers 70-year-old military tunic. My Jacket- My blanket- My Jacket from which I am inseparable. My Jacket goes wherever I go. This Jacket is my home. ~Homeless Poet~
After Apple-Picking My long two-pointed ladder's sticking through a tree Toward heaven still, And there's a barrel that I didn't fill Beside it, and there may be two or three Apples I didn't pick upon some bough. But I am done with apple-picking now. Essence of winter sleep is on the night, The scent of apples: I am drowsing off. I cannot rub the strangeness from my sight I got from looking through a pane of glass I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough And held against the world of hoary grass. It melted, and I let it fall and break. But I was well Upon my way to sleep before it fell, And I could tell What form my dreaming was about to take. Magnified apples appear and disappear, Stem end and blossom end, And every fleck of russet showing clear. My instep arch not only keeps the ache, It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round. I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend. And I keep hearing from the cellar bin The rumbling sound Of load on load of apples coming in. For I have had too much Of apple-picking: I am overtired Of the great harvest I myself desired. There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch, Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall. For all That struck the earth, No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble, Went surely to the cider-apple heap As of no worth. One can see what will trouble This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is. Were he not gone, The woodchuck could say whether it's like his Long sleep, as I describe its coming on, Or just some human sleep. BY ROBERT FROST
