The group prays for our Blessed Mother s intercession to end violence (both domestic and civil) and the persecution of Christians throughout the world. All parishioners are invited to join us. We welcome anyone willing to lead a decade of the Rosary in a language other than English. St. Helen s Purgatorial Society Mass All parishioners have the opportunity to enroll the names of loved ones in the Purgatorial Society. The Purgatorial Society Mass will be held on the last Friday of each month. The offering to be enrolled in the Purgatorial Society is $120 per name (a total of 12 Masses for one year will be said for your loved one). Aside from listing one name, a husband and wife together, or a family name is also acceptable. Having a Purgatorial Society is wonderful way of living out the Scriptures and will be a relief for those who desire to have their loved ones remembered with prayers all year long at God s Altar. Please stop in at the Rectory if you are interested in having a loved one enrolled in the Purgatorial Society. The next Purgatorial Society Mass will be held Friday, November 24, 2017.
October 29, 2017 Page 2 Of Crying Babies and Cry Babies Recently, I had someone in my office who asked me what she should do in the event that her child begins to cry in church. I shrugged, and realized that s what babies do; I suggested maybe walk around with the child or go into the foyer of the Church where the child can have a cry. I quickly realized, she was asking only because of the stares and grimaces of those sitting around her when the child became unruly. Let us put this into perspective! I spent nine years studying for the priesthood. Nine years of sitting in a chapel never hearing the sound of a child s voice. On family day, the Seminary Chapel would be filled with Seminarian s families and the sound of all sorts of voices. The sounds of children chattering, dropping books and babies crying was heard only once a year! The fact of the matter is, that is what children do! Children become agitated, they cry, they crawl around, play with books and make noise. I believe this situation is not something to be overly concerned about. Of crying babies might I suggest: if your child becomes upset you know your child best. If it is an out of the ordinary crying or agitation, maybe a little walking around will help them. The foyer of the church, although not sound proof, will greatly reduce the sound and permit your child to walk around or have it out. There are speakers in the foyer which will allow you to hear the Mass and, of course, the doors are made of glass, permitting you to see Mass. This may be especially necessary during homily time as it is the only part of the Mass that can not be followed by using a book. Also, if a child needs to use the bathroom, that child should always be accompanied by a parent! What I do believe needs more attention and needs to be addressed, is the chatter of adults, who, before Mass, find it necessary to discuss everything from what is happening in the neighborhood to what s on sale at the supermarket. The chatter and conversations of adults before Mass sometimes reaches a fever pitch, and is more offensive and unsettling than the occasional child who, to no fault of their own, cries out for attention. Interestingly, I have found that the adults who are cry babies about crying babies are the same individuals who find it necessary to have long, loud conversations before Mass begins! That, my friends needs to stop! Fr.
