Atlanta Tidbits Ledger Atlanta Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Organized March 15, 1921 Editor: Henry Cobb www.saratlanta.org Volume 7 Issue 4 Atlanta, Georgia April 2018 Next Meeting Thursday April 12th Mark your calendars for Thursday April 12th chapter meeting at the Petite Violette Restaurant, 2948 Clairmont Rd, Atlanta, GA 30329. Regular meetings are held on the second Thursdays of the month except in February when we meet on the Saturday closest to Washington s birthday and in July and August when we do not schedule a regular meeting. Remember those soda can tabs, Labels for Education, and Box Tops for Education for donation to the Children of the American Revolution, magazines and toiletries for veterans at the VA Hospital, paperback books for the USO, and history and genealogy books for our fund raising Traveling Book Store. A drop-off point at the table next to the registration table is set up to receive your donations. Upcoming Regular Atlanta Chapter Meetings Usually held the 2 nd Thursday April 12, 2018 Our speaker will be David Bessho who served in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 2011. He was commissioned as an Infantry officer and served on active duty in West Germany and South Korea. After leaving active duty, he continued to serve in the Army Reserve as a Civil Affairs officer with the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne). After 9/11, he was called up for service in Afghanistan in 2002, and again in 2007 for the surge campaign in Iraq. His presentation briefly covers the background and mission of the U.S. Army Civil Affairs branch and discusses some of the operations of the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) in Afghanistan (2002-2003) and Iraq (2007-2008).

March Meeting Highlights Chapter President Henry Cobb leads the meeting

Tim F. Miller was our speaker in March. His topic was Patriots vs. Loyalists, America s First Civil War. He discussed how families were sometimes split because of their differences over the Colonies independence from Great Britain. An example he used was Benjamin Franklin and his son. New Flag Streamer Tom Gurley presents a streamer to Color Guard Chairman Terry Manning that was presented to the Chapter for placing a wreath at the Briar Creek ceremony on March 3 rd.

Patriots in Georgia Revolutionary War Engagements 1776-1782 Our book is now in the Library of Congress. The proceeds from the book to the Atlanta Chapter are approximately $15,000 To put that into perspective, our Chapter would normally have less than $1,000 per year available to fund the types of projects that these proceeds will fund. This is a monumental opportunity that David and Richard have made available to our Chapter and to the preservation of the 42 known battle sites in Georgia. Members are encouraged to purchase a book for personal use or as a donation to a library or other organization. Out of 300 books the chapter has distributed two thirds of the books. There are less than 70 books remaining. The Chapter has set a goal to get copies of this book into as many libraries and research facilities in Georgia and across the nation as possible. To achieve this, we are encouraging the purchase and donation of books. All net proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to preserve and support research Georgia Revolutionary War battle sites. Additional information about the book, including purchase and donation options, can be obtained at: www.saratlanta.org Some locations in Georgia that do not have a copy of the book are: Dougherty County (Albany), Washington County (Sandersville), Gwinnett County, Laurens County (Dublin), Ware County (Waycross), Coffee County (Douglas), Henry County (McDonough), Houston County (Perry), Lowndes County (Valdosta). If you are interested in purchasing a book for a library in one of these locations please contact Richard Marsh. This is not a comprehensive list of the locations without books. Our Chapter in the Community Terry Manning continues to reprsent SAR and the Atlanta Chapter with his many presentations to groups of all types. During the first 3 months of 2018 Terry presented programs on behalf of SAR to over 1,100 individuals. It is not likely that any other individual in the State Society reaches more individuals on an annual basis than does Terry. David Noble also continues his work with preservation and exploration of Revolutionary War battlefields. His major efforts contiue on reseraching Col. John Dooly s home death and burial location. 2018 Chapter Officer Directory Chapter officers to serve February 24, 2018, to February 23, 2019, are as follows: President Henry Cobb whc2gt@yahoo.com Vice President Bill Goodman wsgmks@mindspring.com Secretary Al Adams moveradams@aol..com Treasurer Richard Marsh rpmarsh1@att.net Registrar David Noble danoble10@att.net Sergeant-At-Arms Bob Campbell gingerbob@bellsouth.net Chancellor Ed Floyd floyd7@bellsouth.net Chaplain J.R. Donations toward chapter sponsored events such as Wreaths Across America also credit toward the Atlanta Fellow program. Our newest (46 th ) Atlanta Fellow is Charlie Newcomer. Veterans Respect Activities The role of the Veterans Respect Committee is to pursue opportunities to honor and recognize current service members and veterans of past service. A wide range of activities fall under this charge. Some examples are: - hours served in the VA Hospital (VAH) Volunteer Service, -visiting a veteran in a VAH, nursing home or private home, -donating personal care items to a VAH or nursing home serving veterans, -donating publications to a VAH, -organizing an outing for one or more veterans,

-participating in a veteran s funeral as a participant, pallbearer, or attendee, -attendance at Revolutionary War Veteran s Grave Marking, -participating in placing flags or wreaths on veteran s graves. We are aware that many of our Atlanta Chapter members have been involved in such activities, but do not know the extent. We would like to gather information on such efforts. If you have been involved in any such activities since January 1, 2017, please report the details to our President Henry Cobb (404-664-8204/ whc2gt@yahoo.com) or our Historian John Titus (678-995-0874/mojotitus@bellsouth.net). Contributions to SAR Programs Contributions made by our members to SAR programs such as Youth Program Endowment Funds, Public Service Program Endowment Funds, Center for Advancing America's Heritage, George Washington Endowment Fund, SAR Foundation, Friends of the Library, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association or the USO count toward the Americanism Points for our Chapter. If you would like to have your contributions counted as part of our Chapter please let Henry Cobb know that you have made the contribution or give the check to Henry so that he can forward it to National. There is no requirement that our Chapter receive credit, so do not feel obligated to let the Chapter know. The contribution is the important part. The chapter receiving credit is a very secondary benefit. JROTC Tom Gurley presented a Bronze JROTC medal and Certificate to Cadet Captain Ernest Zode Compton at Grady High School on March 21 st. The Chapter could use more volunteers to present awards to JROTC Cadets (NO Speeches required).

Publicity The Atlanta Chapter is in need of guidance in the field of publicity and marketing. If you have experience in this area and would have some time to provide guidance and/or advice, please call Henry Cobb @ 404-664-8204 or email @ whc2gt@yahoo.com Membership New Members Member Lynn Chadwick Butler Thomas Wood Montgomery Matthews Michael Pierson (2017) Leroy Lamar, III Marion Bryan Lamar Patriot Ancestor Ichabod Marshall John Morton David Lawyer Joshua Wilson Joshua Wilson Transfer In John Kirkpatrick Thompson, Jr. John Kirkpatrick Thompson, III (junior member) Hugh Rogers Hugh Rogers Reinstatements Supplemental Certificates Gregory Smith Cristobal Faustin Vigil

Parking Some members have asked about parking at Petite Violette. They provide valet parking and there is some parking available at the office building next door at 2948 Clairmont Rd. Below is a photo of the path from this parking area at the first Visitor Parking sign to the restaurant.

Have you had a difficult time leaving Petite Violette to go back North on Clairmont Rd? If so here are a couple of potential solutions (see map below): 1) Exit to the right and get into the far left lane as though you were going to get onto I 85 North, instead make a U turn under I 85 on Clairmont. 2) Exit to the right and turn right as though you were going to I 85 South, stay in the far right lane on the frontage road and then turn right onto Briarwood Road between the Life Storage building and REI. This will take you to Buford Highway where you can turn right which will take you back to Clairmont Rd.
