M ISSION ARLINGTON MISSION METROPLEX LESSON 6 Old Testament Abraham and Lot Genesis 13:1-18 18 Memory Verse: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love Him with all your strength and with all your mind. (Luke 10:27 NIrV) Lesson Goals: 1. Understand that Abraham and Lot had many animals. 2. Understand that there was not enough food for the ani- mals to graze. 3. Recognize that Lot chose to live in Sodom. 4. Learn that God blessed Abraham and promised him many descendants. Last week we learned about Abraham. God called him and told him that He would have many descendants. God told Abraham to go to a place that He would show Him. Abraham believed God and obeyed. Read the Bible READ: Genesis 13:1-18 18 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Begin With Prayer Abraham and his nephew Lot traveled around the desert in tents. They followed God and did what He said. Remember that Abraham had lots of sheep and animals. They traveled with them and grazed on the land. Lot also had many animals. As they moved from place to place, they had to have enough land for both groups of animals to graze. (Genesis 13:1-5) As the animal herds and flocks grew, they needed more food and land for the animals. One day, Lot s helpers started arguing with Abraham s helpers. They argued over where the animals would graze. Abraham said, Let s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your helpers and my helpers because we are brothers. There is much land all around us. Let s separate. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I ll go to the left. (Genesis 13:6-9) Lot looked up and saw the beautiful green grass around the river. He also saw two cities that had lots of activity. So, Lot chose for himself the green pastureland to the east. Because Lot chose this land, Abraham went to the west and settled in the land of Canaan. Lot lived near a city called Sodom. It was full of activity, but the people were very wicked and mean. They often made bad choices and sinned against God. Lot chose to be around people who did wrong and it caused him and his family to accept the sin. They probably did more wrongs because they were around people who sinned. (Genesis 13:10-12) Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 6 Page 2

Abraham Bible Facts 1. Lot was Abraham s nephew. 2. The land could not sustain the flocks of both men. 3. Lot chose to live in Sodom. 4. God promised Abraham many descendants. Abraham, on the other hand, followed God and obeyed God. He did right things and lived to please God. God continued to tell Abraham that He would bless him and give him many children. God told Abraham to look all around. God shared that He would give Abraham and his family all the land that he could see. Abraham believed God and knew He would keep His promise. God also asked Abraham to look at the dusty dirt he was standing on. He told Abraham that he would have more family descendants than dust particles. (Genesis 13:13-18) Abraham and Lot were very different people. Abraham followed God and did things God s way. Lot followed his own way and lived for himself. God wants us to think of others before we think of ourselves. (I Corinthians 10:24) God wants us to care about each other and to take care of each other. What about you? Do you live for God and do things God s way or do you want to do things your way? God wants us to do things His way and love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Luke 10:27) Review 1. Who was Lot? (Abraham s nephew) 2. Why did Lot and Abraham separate? (the land could not sustain the flocks of both men) 3. Where did Lot go? (Lot chose the land to the east and lived in Sodom) 4. What did God do? (God blessed Abraham and told him that he would give him children as numerous as the dust particles) Do you know Jesus? Do you know how you can do things God s way? To be part of God s family, you must tell God you are sorry for all the wrongs you have done and ask Jesus to come into your life. (Romans 10:9-10; I John 1:9) He will come into your life and help you do right. He will guide you and show you the right way to go. If you want to know more, talk to your teacher. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to help us do right. 3. Ask God to help you know the right way to go. 4. Pray for friends and family members who need to follow God. Application Abraham and Lot had so many animals that there was not enough food for the animals to graze. Abraham asked Lot to choose an area to live in and Abraham would choose another. Lot chose to live in Sodom and Abraham chose the land of Canaan. Abraham believed and obeyed God. God blessed Abraham and promised him many descendants. God was faithful to His promise. Preschool Lesson Read the Bible READ: Genesis 13:1-8 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Sing Father Abraham, Praise Him, or another song related to the story. Abraham and his nephew Lot traveled around the desert and lived in tents. They followed God and did what He said. Remember that Abraham had lots of sheep and animals. (Make baaa sounds and moo sounds.) They traveled with them and grazed on the land. Lot also had many animals. As they moved from place to place, they had to have enough land for both groups of animals to graze. As the animal herds and flocks grew, they needed more food and land for the animals. Lot looked up and saw the beautiful green grass around the river. (Put your hand over your eyes like you are looking.) He also saw two cities that had lots of activity. We need to be like Abraham and follow God and obey Him. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to help us do right. 3. Ask God to help you know the right way to go. Memory verse for younger children: Love God. Luke 10:27 NIrV Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 6 Page 4

Learning Activities Memory verse activity Play hangman to learn the verse. Talk about would it means to receive a gift (like at Christmas) and what it means to receive Jesus. Test your memory Bring several toy sheep, toy cattle, and toy men. As you tell the story, set up a map that shows the journey of Abraham and Lot and place the toy animals and toy men on the map. Let the children retell the story. Taste activity Travel around and eat snacks (dried fruits and nuts) today like Abraham. Think about it How do you deal with quarrels in your family? Talk about how God wants us to live in peace and love our enemies. Lot was greedy and chose the best land. He didn t ask God what He wanted. Abraham waited for God and God blessed him and gave him ALL the land! Name some things that show that we are greedy. Now think of ways to share and do things God s way. When we get close to sin and people who do wrong, it makes us more willing to do wrong things. How can we live for God and do right things and not be deep in sin? Touch activity To illustrate how we become desensitized to sin; bring a clear glass of water, and a tea bag. Share how the water is clean and pure. Now put the tea bag in the water. Notice how the water starts to become cloudy and dirty. When we are around sin a lot, we become used to it and over time, we begin to sin also. Share how we must try to do right and follow God all the time at church, at school, at home, everywhere! Run and play Have some of the children pretend to be sheep and cattle. Ask four of the children to be the herdsmen (two for Lot and two for Abraham). Let the herdsmen lead races from one place to another. Listen As the children take time for silence, remind them that God wants us to believe and obey Him. Sing Take time to sing the Father Abraham, Praise Him, Trust and Obey, or sing another song related to the story. Reach out Pray specifically for kids that did not come today. Ask one of the children to pray. Invite several of the children to go with you to deliver coloring pages to those who did not come. Encourage those who did not come to read the story in the Bible.
