JESUS WAS BAPTIZED AND WE ARE, TOO! The Second Sunday after Epiphany January 11-14, 2018

N84 W15252 Menomonee Ave. Menomonee Falls, WI 53051 N108 W14290 Bel Aire Lane Germantown, WI 53022 WELCOME TO WORSHIP! We are pleased that you have chosen to worship the Lord with us today. If you are a guest visiting with us, know that we are thankful you have joined us, and please take a moment to sign the friendship register during the gathering of the thank offering. Large print hymnals (both locations) are available upon request from an usher. Hearing assist devices (Falls only) are available upon request from an usher. Restrooms at the Falls: In the lower level of the church and also down the school hallway. Restrooms at Germantown: In the north and south halls of the building. If you need a place to quiet a restless child, the service is streamed to a TV in the lower level of the Falls and in the Alpha Room at Germantown. SERVICE NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY The order of service for today is printed in this folder. The hymns are found in Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal, the red hymnal, or are printed in the folder. Communion We are celebrating the Lord s Supper today. What is this Sacrament? It is the receiving of Christ s body and blood, together with the bread and wine, for the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins (Mt. 26:17-29; 1 Cor. 11:23-29). It is an expression of unity among us when it comes to the teachings of Jesus (Jn. 8:31,32). If you are visiting with us today, please speak with one of our Pastors about receiving this Sacrament. 2

THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY Our order of worship this morning is the Common Service, which is a version of the historic liturgy of the Christian church, and is found on p. 15 in the front of the red hymnal. OPENING HYMN Baptized in Water 297 P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION OF SINS P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie 3

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. GLORY BE TO GOD Gloria in Excelsis 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray. Almighty God, you gave your one and only Son to be the light of the world. Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and believed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. 5

THE WORD FIRST LESSON Isaiah 42:1-7 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope. 5 This is what God the LORD says the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. 6

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 67 Tune 83 1 God of mercy, God of grace, Show the brightness of your face. Shine upon us, Savior, shine; Fill your Church with light divine, And your saving health extend To the earth s remotest end. 2 Let the people praise you, Lord! Be by all that live adored. Let the nations shout and sing Glory to their Savior King, At your feet their tribute pay, And your holy will obey. 3 Let the people praise you, Lord, Then enjoy your rich reward! God to us his blessing give, We to God devoted live, All below and all above One in joy and light and love. SECOND LESSON Acts 10:34-38 34 Then Peter began to speak: I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. VERSE OF THE DAY Mark 1:11b P: Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Alleluia. Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function. After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: 7

GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 3:13-17 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We 8

acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Rise, O Light of Gentile Nations 577 SERMON Acts 10:34-38 How True It Is that God Loves All People A case study from Peter s day A case study from today After the sermon, the congregation sings: THANK OFFERING II Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 9

Please take a moment during the gathering of the thank offering to sign the FRIENDSHIP REGISTER and get to know those seated around you. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: O heavenly Father, we come before you this day in thanksgiving and praise. We thank you for revealing yourself at the baptism of Jesus. There you declared the one born at Bethlehem and adored by the Magi to be your dearly loved Son in whom you are well pleased. Enable all of us to find in him our hope and salvation. As you anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit, so pour out that same Spirit on us that we may serve you in the world. Take from us all fear and doubt, overcome our laziness and indecision, and drive the ugliness of sin from our lives. Open our eyes to the glorious truth that as your baptized children we are your priests in this world. Grant your strength and blessing to all pastors, teachers, and missionaries. May they proclaim your Word with fervor and diligence and so bring light to those who sit in darkness. In your mercy bring help and healing to the sick and the afflicted. By your grace enable them to cast their care on you, knowing that you care for them. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. P: May we all together rejoice in your Son, Jesus Christ, whom we worship with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. 10

THE SACRAMENT P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a human being and revealed his glory as your only Son, full of grace and truth. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 11

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. 12

O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei DISTRIBUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMN Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice 377 SONG OF SIMEON Nunc Dimittis 13

P: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. P: We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this holy supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BLESSING P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. 14
