Woman, here is your son... Here is your mother. John 19:26-27

LENT: A period of 40 days (sans Sundays) starting on Ash Wednesday (last Wednesday), leading up to Good Friday. It s a time of refection, remembrance, repentance and reconciliation. We don t take Lent that seriously here. But we do take the Cross of Christ seriously! So we ve called our Lent Series Gravitas: The final Words of Jesus. We will spend 7 Sundays looking at Jesus last words. LENT 1: Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:43) LENT 2: Woman, here is your son... Here is your mother. (John 19:26-27) LENT 3: Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? (Matt 27:46) LENT 4: I am thirsty. (John 19:28) LENT 5: It is finished (John 19:30) PALM SUNDAY: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. (Luke 23:34) GOOD FRIDAY: Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. (Luke 23:46) EASTER SUNDAY: Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for? (John 20:15) 1

QUOTEs: There is something infinitely moving in the fact that Jesus in the agony of the cross, in the moment when the salvation of the world hung in the balance, thought of the loneliness of his mother in the days when he was taken away. ~ William Barclay If you asked twenty good men today what they thought the highest of the virtues, nineteen of them would reply, Unselfishness. But if you had asked almost any of the great Christians of old, he would have replied, Love. You see what has happened? A negative term has been substituted for a positive... The negative ideal of Unselfishness carries with it the suggestion not primarily of securing good things for others, but of going without them ourselves, as if our abstinence and not their happiness was the important point. I do not think this is the Christian virtue of Love. ~ C.S Lewis, The Weight of Glory. 2

1 John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! SONG : Your grace is enough Great is Your faithfulness O God You wrestle with the sinner s heart You lead us by still waters into mercy And nothing can keep us apart So remember Your people Remember Your children Remember Your promise O God Your grace is enough Your grace is enough Your grace is enough for me Great is Your love and justice God You use the weak to lead the strong You lead us in the song of Your salvation And all Your people sing along So remember Your people Remember Your children Remember Your promise O God Your grace is enough Your grace is enough Your grace is enough for me CCLI Song No. 4477026 2003 spiritandsong.com Thankyou Music (Admin. by Crossroad Distributors Pty. 1 John 3:4-5; 16 4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 16...This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. SONG: Saviour King And now the weak say I have strength By the spirit of power that raised Christ from the dead And now the poor stand and confess That my portion is Him and I m more than blessed Let now our hearts burn with a flame A fire consuming all for your Son s holy name And with the heavens we declare You are our king We love you Lord, we worship you You are our God, you alone are good Let now your church shine as the bride That you saw in your heart as you offered up your life Let now the lost be welcomed home By the saved and redeemed those adopted as your own Let now our hearts burn with a flame A fire consuming all for your Son s holy name And with the heavens we declare You are our king We love you Lord, we worship you You are our God, you alone are good You asked your Son to carry this The heavy cross our weight of sin I love you Lord, I worship you Hope which was lost, now stands renewed I give my life to honour this The love of Christ, the saviour king 4 Marty Sampson Mia Fieldes Copyright 2006 Hillsong Publishing (Admin. by Hillsong Publishing (Australia) Used by permission. 1 John 3:19-20 9 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 5

SONg: Redemption Redemption like a flood has come To wash away our sin Relentless like the ocean s tide He has brought us in Any honour Any glory We owe him (repeat) Redemption like the sun has come And darkness has no place Relentless like the summer s blaze He has shone his grace Any honour Any glory We owe him (repeat) Redemption like the sun has come And darkness has no place Relentless like the summer s blaze He has shone his grace Your kingdom come Your will be done On earth Written by Matt Straw, 2010. Psalm 22:11-19 11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. 12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. 13 Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. 16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. 19 But you, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me. 7

John 19:23-27 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24 Let s not tear it, they said to one another. Let s decide by lot who will get it. This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. So this is what the soldiers did. 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, Dear woman, here is your son, 27 and to the disciple, Here is your mother. From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. sermon thoughts: 8
