Arm s Length Christianity Down through the centuries, hunters have used bow/arrows, blowguns, spears and guns to kill monkeys. But the most interesting way I ever read about was how the hunters would catch the monkeys by letting the monkey trap himself. The hunter would take a wild gourd and cut a two-inch hole in the side and a smaller one in the top, where a rope could be put through and the gourd hung from a tree. He would then take the insides out of the gourd, and place several handfuls of peanuts in the gourd. Usually sooner than later, a monkey would come and stick his hand in and grab a big handful of these peanuts, but his hand would be too big to pull it out. Now he is trapped, with no way out. The hunter would come back, and that night he would have a monkey dinner. Why doesn t the monkey let go of the peanuts and run away? Because monkeys are so greedy and selfish, they will refuse to let go. The hunter kills him with his fist still inside the gourd, hanging on to food it never gets to eat. Many in the world and the church are just like that monkey. They reach out and grab on to this world, and refuse to let go, even though it will mean certain death. Their love for the world and everything in it allows the devil to trap them in sins like lying, stealing, drugs, alcohol, the love of money, greed, gambling, sexual immorality, or some other sin. They get trapped, and then conformed to this world! Then, like the monkey, they die! Romans 12:2 - do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. To be worldly means being conformed to this world! It means that we love the world and want to fit in and get along with the world and be like the world! Godliness is being like God in our behavior. We cannot be both worldly and godly - they do not mix. James 4:4 - You adulterers! Don t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Many Christians today are calling themselves Christians, but living like the world around them. In fact, there is very little difference in the way the majority of people who claim to be Christians and those who don t live their lives (Barna Seminar in Little Rock, March 30, 1998). James 4:6-8: But He gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, God opposes the proud but favors the humble. So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. 1 John 2:15-17: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. The love of the world and the love of God are not compatible. That s why the most miserable people on the face of this planet are those who know they are supposed to serve God, but are not willing to give up the world. They try to straddle the fence and have it both ways! The Israelites wanted to be friends with the world they lived in, but they got too close for comfort and it wasn t long before they were doing the very same things the pagans were doing. They were content in the beginning to just stay one arm s length away from the world, and as the world they lived in got worse, they got worse. Today, the church is guilty of Arm s length Christianity. This means that we have our eyes more closely fixed on our culture than we do on Jesus. As the world slides down that broad path that leads to destruction, we slide with it. 1

I. The church of Laodicea Revelation 3:14-19: Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God s new creation: I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, I am rich. I have everything I want. I don t need a thing! And you don t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference. The church in Laodicea was not really for the Lord nor were they against Him. They had an abundance of physical things, but they were severely lacking in spiritual values. The Laodiceans were trying to be of the world and belong to Jesus. They saw themselves as rich and in need of nothing - not even God. The church in America is in the process of becoming more secularized and worldly with each passing day. Like the Laodiceans, many do not sense a real need for God - they are satisfied just the way it is. Christianity is no longer a passion for most people, it is a pastime. Within a single lifetime religion has been reduced to something we do on our leisure time, if it doesn t get in the way of something else! One of the great problems is that science has made this world more attractive. Much of the drudgery has been taken from life. Leisure time has been made more pleasant. As the world becomes more attractive, mankind thinks more of this present world and less and less of heaven. This process has been going on for a long time, but in the last 60+ years the church has become strangled by it. And we hardly knew what hit us. Our level of commitment in the church is nowhere near where the Bible says it should be! We don t live the way God said we are to live - we don t study and pray like we should and we are not totally committed to Jesus Christ - most people never even think about talking to someone else about Jesus. 99 times out of 100 these days when you ask a minister or church member how their church is doing they mention three things - attendance, budget and building size. None of these are mentioned in the Bible. Christianity began by meeting in caves, upper rooms, and people s houses. In Jesus letters to the seven churches of Asia we don t know how many people were in those churches. Laodicea may have had 4000 but what difference did it make since all of them were about to be vomited out of the mouth of the Lord. Smyrna may have had 50 people but they were really in tune with the Lord. Cults have big buildings; people who hate God have big budgets. It is because of worldliness that our churches today are, to a large extent, lifeless, loveless, and Spiritless. We have made the ministry and our worship services so professional and mechanical three points, a poem and a clever story, but not too many lives are being changed. Now instead of a spiritual organism that is continuing steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers it s all we can do to get people to a worship service for one hour on Sunday morning. We are continually trying to shorten the worship services, and prayer meetings they died out decades ago. This wasn t what Jesus had in mind when He died on the cross, nor is this the church that is described in the book of Acts. I believe that if Jesus were to address the church of today, He would say the church in America is a worldly church - that we are lukewarm not really for the Lord but not against Him that we have an abundance of physical things, but are severely lacking in spiritual values! 2

II. The Worldly Church It has been said that The church is more worldly than the world was 20 years ago. Many things that are acceptable to us, would have never been acceptable to our parents generation, and are definitely unacceptable to God! There are things that just 20-30 years ago would cause us to blush, that we would never have even dreamed of doing, watching, saying, etc., which now isn t any big deal. We used to preach against the dangers of immoral and ungodly activities such as drinking, fornication, adultery, homosexuality, pornography, gambling, and the love of money, immodest dressing, and such like. Now there is a growing tendency in the church to tolerate all manner of ungodliness among the members so they won t get mad and leave. Many ungodly activities and practices once staunchly opposed by the church are now permitted and even encouraged. Today our children are watching, hearing, saying, doing things, and wearing clothes that would have never been allowed at one time! Friends, we are supposed to be like Jesus, not just one arm s length better than the world. Paul told Timothy to flee youthful lusts, not just stay one arm s length away from it. Like the Israelites, some Christians and churches have become so comfortable with sin that it no longer bothers them: Jeremiah 6:15 Are they ashamed of their disgusting actions? Not at all they don t even know how to blush! III. Physically alive but spiritually dead What happens to people/churches who become worldy/secularized? Near the end of the first century Jesus told the church at Sardis - I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead (Revelation 3:1). Apparently Sardis had started out on the right path, but now it was dying of dry rot, an internal deterioration. They were physically alive but spiritually dead. There are congregations throughout this country that are every bit as dead as the church at Sardis. Most of the time it is not a single issue that kills a church -- it is a combination of several things. But since faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God the root cause for why churches become worldly and secularized and die is because they stop hearing the word of God and reject the absolute authority of the Bible! God says in Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. Christians are not studying their Bibles the way they did in the past. As a result, we are becoming Biblically illiterate. And preachers who are afraid of losing their jobs aren t standing up and preaching against the sin and ungodliness and worldliness that is being tolerated in the church! Preachers today are supposed to be user friendly, not stepping on any toes, not mentioning anything about sin but that will never wash when we stand before the one whose eyes are like fire. God wants people to be told that He loves them with a tender, everlasting love, and that He would have rather died than live without them in heaven, but He also wants people told about sin and the effects of sin, that He will not tolerate willful sinning, that no evil will dwell in His presence. Sin is not what society says it is. Sin is not what the media says it is. Sin is what God says it is, and His labels do not change. Jesus said Go and sin no more, not It's okay, I don't judge you, so you can keep on sinning. It's cool! 1 Thessalonians 5:22 Stay away from every kind of evil. 3

2 Corinthians 6:14-18: Don t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. 2 Timothy 4:1-4: I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he appears to set up his Kingdom: Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths. People in our communities are losing their lives and souls everyday our churches are losing our young people in record numbers. The whole world is wounded by Satan and sin. Our culture openly defies God, the Bible, the church, marriage, morals, ethics - lives are being destroyed by divorce, abortion, alcohol, drugs, violence, spousal/child abuse, theft, murder, etc. Every nation today, and many churches, groups, and families are in desperate need of healing. Worldliness is a malignancy that is steadily invading the church and is eating away at the very souls of our people and our churches. It is preventing the church from being what it is supposed to be - a preserving influence for godliness and righteousness (Matthew 5:13-16). Instead, we have allowed the world into the American church, and for that we are paying a very dear price. The greatest hindrance to Christianity is NOT the worldliness outside the church, but the worldliness inside. Zwingli There is a common worldly kind of Christianity in this day, which many have a cheap Christianity which offends nobody and requires no sacrifice which cost nothing and is worth nothing J.C. Ryle Most middle-class Americans tend to worship their work, to work at their play, and to play at their worship. For the church to be what it ought to be, you and I must be what we ought to be. Churches are seriously handicapped in what they can do when their members are worldly: A worldly Christian cannot shine for Christ a worldly church cannot reach the world for Christ! Worldly Christian = Heavenly Devil IV. Conclusion In His letter to the Laodiceans, Jesus was saying that they had pushed Him out of their lives, and they weren t even aware they had done so. This can happen to us as well. Take the time to look at your life. Have you become lukewarm in your service to the Jesus? Have you lost your enthusiasm? Have you settled into a comfortable spiritual rut? Were you ever closer to Jesus? In the past, were you more aware of His presence? Were you once more enthusiastic about Christianity? Are you more in love with the world than you are with Jesus? Do you have your hand in the gourd and are refusing to let go? Is Jesus the King of your life, or is it your job, or money, or pleasure, or a person, etc? 4

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Are you refusing to take your hand out of the gourd and open the door for Jesus? Remember, knob is on the inside He will not force Himself in. But to turn the knob and let Jesus in means you have to take your hands off of the world! The monkey only spends a little while with its hand in the gourd before he is killed - many of us spend our entire lives in the traps that Satan sets in this world! Today, is your hand in a gourd? Then repent and let go before it s too late! Romans 13:11-12: This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here Revelation 3:21-22: To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. 5
