Parent s Guide Journey Parents Dear Parents, Our goal in Awana is to work alongside parents to train children and youth to grow into adults who know, love and serve the Lord. We recognize that parents are the primary spiritual nurturers of their children and we want to do all we can to help. Our desire is to provide you with the tools that enable you to be involved with the curriculum your child is studying. Your children are now in high school. They are on the brink of adulthood, yet you occasionally still see glimpses of the little kid they once were. At other times, you gasp in amazement as they respond with astounding maturity. We want our teens to face the world strong in their faith, no matter what s ahead on their live s journey. We want them to understand that life can be difficult, but also to rest in the life-supporting perspective that God is sovereign. The Journey curriculum focuses on teaching teens to make life choices with that Christ-centered perspective. They can trust in Him. To help you, the parent, familiarize yourself with what your teen is learning at Journey, we provide these Parent s Guides which offer a summary of the lessons and discussion questions to get a conversation going with your teen. We hope you find these guides helpful. We are thankful for the privilege of working alongside you in discipling your teens to know, love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. We can think of no task more worthwhile. If you have any questions, please talk to your teen s leader. Praying for you, The Awana Youth Ministries Team Parent s Guide is a production of Awana Youth Ministries and Awana at Home awanaym.org awana.org/athome

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 1: Future Features Memory Verse: Revelation 1:3 In a Nutshell Revelation was written to show that God is in control and that victory over sin and death will be accomplished through Jesus Christ. Summary John, by God s choosing, wrote the book of Revelation to describe some things that will take place during the end times. In the first few verses the reader meets seven churches in Asia. Here, Christ introduces Himself as the Alpha and the Omega. John makes it very clear that, as future events unfold, God is in control, just as He has been since the beginning. The Next Step Revelation can be a confusing, scary book if you don t remember one thing: God is in control. No matter what happens today or what happened yesterday, God is in total control. If He didn t have total control, He would not be God. Spend some time at the dinner table talking about God s sovereignty (His control over everything). Have each family member bring up one thing he or she wants to stop worrying about because God is in control of it. Then take time to pray and ask God to remind you of His sovereignty and love for you in all your circumstances. Lesson 1: Future Features 2012 Awana Clubs International 1

TM Parent s Guide Revelation In a Nutshell Jesus Christ appeared personally to John and told him what to write. Lesson 2: The Lord of Glory Memory Verse: Revelation 1:8 Summary John begins Revelation by sending greetings from Christ and himself to the seven churches in Asia. Unlike some other prophetic messages, Revelation was meant to be heard and communicated. After the brief introduction and greeting, John tries to describe his encounter with Jesus Christ. It s been over 60 years since he s seen Christ, but John recognized Him as Jesus. John s description is much like Daniel s description of the Almighty God in Daniel 7:9. John was so overwhelmed with Christ that he fell down at Christ s feet immediately. But Christ urged John to get up and write down what he was seeing so John could tell people what was to take place soon. The Next Step Being a Christian teenager is not easy. There is pressure to get good grades, look like your friends, play your sports well, get to church on time, try to make your parents happy, and be cool. Often the pressure of each day is so much that even thinking about the next day is hard. Revelation forces the reader to think about some events that will take place in the future. For a Christian teenager, these events can be encouraging. But even more than the events that will take place, Jesus Christ is the encouragement they need. This week take your teenager out for dinner and talk about Christ and His control over her life and future. It s hard to understand how life will work out, but knowing and trusting Christ will bring peace. Lesson 2: The Lord of Glory 2012 Awana Clubs International 3

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 3: You ve Got Mail! Memory Verse: Revelation 2:19 In a Nutshell Four churches are commended for their works for Christ but warned about things they needed to do better. Summary Revelation 2 is filled with letters to the different churches John addressed in Chapter 1. Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum and Thyatira are all given a description of Christ, a commendation, counsel and a promise. The Next Step With your son or daughter, brainstorm about what Christ would say about the church you attend. Write down some descriptions of Christ based on your current sermon series and also discuss some commendations and condemnations for your church as it relates to your teenager. Spend some time thinking of ways to increase your church s strengths and finding ways to strengthen the areas where there are weaknesses. Pray together, asking God to move in your hearts and in the lives of those at your church. Lesson 3: You ve Got Mail! 2012 Awana Clubs International 5

(The answer can be found in Ephesus.) 10. To which church did Christ describe Himself as the living one? (The answer can be found in Revelation 2:8.) Lesson 3: You ve Got Mail! 6

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 4: More Mail Memory Verses: Revelation 3:15-16 In a Nutshell Three more churches are given commendations and warnings. Summary Like Revelation 2, Chapter 3 is filled with a description of Christ, and, for three churches, a commendation, a condemnation, counsel and a promise. The churches in this chapter include Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. The Next Step The students were challenged to take a poll among their friends to see where they (their friends) land on the issues mentioned at the beginning of the lesson (Prayer can change what happens in life, the Christian faith is relevant to your life, etc.). After your son or daughter completes this, ask your teenager if any of the questions led to more serious questions on faith. After you discuss the answers your teenager s friends gave, pray with him and for his friends. Ask God to use him to lead one of his friends to Christ in the coming year. (The answer can be found in Revelation 3:1-4.) Lesson 4: More Mail 8

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 5: He Is Worthy! Memory Verse: Revelation 4:11 In a Nutshell Angels and other creatures worship Christ for His righteousness. Summary The title of this lesson is He Is Worthy! And indeed, Jesus Christ is worthy of all our praise. In Revelation 4-5, worship is expressed to the Creator and to the Redeemer. As the reader is invited to worship the Creator, he gets a sneak peek into God s throne room and the worshipers around it. Then the reader is taken to a vision of the Redeemer. The Redeemer holds a sealed scroll that holds future events. Around the Redeemer are thousands of angels, 24 elders and 4 living creatures. The Next Step Take some time as a family to read Revelation 4-5 aloud a few times. Talk about the throne room and discuss the images (blazing lamps, thunder, rainbow, emerald, etc.). Allow this discussion to turn into praise by thanking God for His power, love and holiness. Lesson 5: He Is Worthy! 2012 Awana Clubs International 9

Review It Questions and Answers (Or where they can be found in your teenager s Journey manual, anyway; you didn t expect us to do all the work for you, did you?) 1. For which of God s works do the elders and living creatures worship Him? (The answer can be found under Worship the Creator.) 2. For which of Christ s works do the elders and living creatures worship Him? (The answer can be found under Worship the Redeemer.) 3. What is one truth about worship you learned from these two chapters? (The answers will vary.) 4. Why is Christ worthy to open the sealed scroll? ((The answer can be found under Worship the Redeemer.) 5. According to Revelation 4:11, how did God create everything? (The answer can be found in the Scripture referenced.) 6. True/False. Any number of people can open the seals on the scroll in God s hand. (The answer can be found under Worship the Redeemer.) 7. What does the rainbow around God s throne represent? (The answer can be found under Worship the Creator.) 8. What is written on the scroll in God s hand? (The answer can be found under Worship the Redeemer.) 9. Define worship in your own words. (The answers will vary.) 10. Why does John see God in His throne room before the judgments begin? (The answer can be found under Worship the Creator.) Lesson 5: He Is Worthy! 10

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 6: Here Comes Trouble Memory Verse: Revelation 7:12 In a Nutshell During the tribulation, sinners will face a series of judgments from God. Summary Revelation 6, and the beginning of Chapter 8, show God s seven seals. Christ breaks open each seal and they include: the Antichrist, war, famine, death, martyr s prayers, earthquake and silence. Revelation 7 is about God s servants. John writes about the angels, who temporarily hold back God s judgments until they seal God s servants, and 144,000 believers who will trust Christ during the tribulation. Chapters 8 and 9 are mainly about the trumpet judgments. They include demolished vegetation, bloody sea, water pollution, interrupted light, demonic activity and a great army from the east. The Next Step The Buckle It In section and On the Street portion of this lesson focus on being thankful for the salvation that you have as well as being mindful to pray for opportunities to witness to family, friends and acquaintances in light of not knowing the time or day of Christ s return. Ask your teenager if she has thought of anyone while considering this part of her lesson. If she has, commit to praying with her for her friend and give her opportunities to be with this person in order to share the gospel. This might include having that friend over for a family dinner or allowing your teenager to hang out where she can have an opportunity to talk with her friend. Lesson 6: Here Comes Trouble 2012 Awana Clubs International 11

Review It Questions and Answers (Or where they can be found in your teenager s Journey manual, anyway; you didn t expect us to do all the work for you, did you?) 1. Who are the 144,000? (The answers can be found under God s Servants.) 2. True/False. After the rapture, no one will be saved. (The answer can be found under God s Servants.) 3. Who opens the seals that bring judgment on earth? (The answer can be found under God s Seal Judgments.) 4. True/False. Food will be plentiful during the tribulation. (The answer can be found under God s Seal Judgments.) 5. True/False. When people experience God s judgments, they will repent of their sins. (The answer can be found under God s Trumpet Judgments.) 6. By the end of the trumpet judgments, what portion of the world s population will be dead? (The answer can be found under God s Trumpet Judgments.) 7. Who is the Antichrist? (The answer can be found under God s Seal Judgments.) 8. Name four of the seal judgments. (The answer can be found under God s Seal Judgments.) 9. True/False. Demonic activity will increase during the tribulation. (The answer can be found under God s Trumpet Judgments.) 10. Name four of the trumpet judgments. (The answer can be found under God s Trumpet Judgments.) Lesson 6: Here Comes Trouble 12

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 7: Eat Any Good Books Lately? Memory Verse: Revelation 11:17 In a Nutshell God s witnesses are killed, and more judgments are unleashed. Summary This lesson covers Revelation 10-11 and is mainly about food, celebration and praise. After the last few chapters in Revelation, these titles seem to show the reader a bit of relief. However, after reading the kinds of food and celebration, the reader will see it s not happy at all. The food mentioned in Chapter 10 is actually a scroll. God wanted John to eat the book that is probably the same seven-sealed book mentioned earlier. The scroll tasted sweet but turned sour in John s stomach. During the celebration mentioned in Revelation 11, witnesses testifying to Christ will be killed. Instead of a proper burial or mourning, the people leave the bodies in the streets and throw a party. However, three and half days later, God raises these witnesses from the dead and brings them to heaven. Those in heaven rejoice that God is about to carry out His plan. The Next Step Reading Revelation can be confusing and scary. It can also be humbling and convicting. It can be hard to read how serious sin and unbelief is. Take your teenager on a walk to discuss what she has observed in the book and study so far. Ask her if she has any questions about what she has read. Do your best to explain or clear up the confusing parts. If you don t know the answer, admit that it is hard for you to understand too, and find some books or commentaries your pastor recommends. Lesson 7: Eat Any Good Books Lately? 2012 Awana Clubs International 13

Review It Questions and Answers (Or where they can be found in your teenager s Journey manual, anyway; you didn t expect us to do all the work for you, did you?) 1. What did the voice tell John to do with the little book he saw? (The answer can be found under New Food.) 2. The two witnesses who appear during the first half of the tribulation remind us of and. (The answer can be found under New Celebration.) 3. Who will kill the two witnesses? (The answer can be found under New Celebration.) 4. True/False. The two witnesses will be buried in Jerusalem. (The answer can be found in the New Celebration.) 5. What will Christ do for those who serve Him? (The answer can be found under New Praise.) 6. What is the mighty angel holding? (The answer can be found under New Food.) 7. True/False. The book John ate became sweet to his stomach. (The answer can be found under New Food.) 8. How long will the two witnesses prophesy? (The answer can be found under New Celebration.) 9. How will the people respond to their deaths? (The answer can be found under New Celebration.) 10. How do those in heaven respond at the midpoint of the tribulation? Why? (The answer can be found under New Praise.) Lesson 7: Eat Any Good Books Lately? 14

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 8: Know Your Enemy Memory Verse: Revelation 12:10 In a Nutshell Satan makes a great effort to defeat Christ but is himself defeated. Summary Revelation 12-13 give us a picture of Satan s schemes until his time runs out. We ll see him interact with a few characters: a woman, a male child and Michael the archangel. The woman is the nation of Israel and she is pregnant with a male child Christ. During the final days of Satan s fight, Michael will get involved. Shortly after, Satan is hurled to the earth and a voice from heaven will announce salvation, declaring God victorious. However, Satan empowers two people during the tribulation: the beast from the sea; the Antichrist, and the beast from the earth; the False Prophet who imitates Christ. The Next Step While Satan appears to have much power in these lessons, remind your teenager that when Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, Satan s power over believers was gone. Encourage your teenager to walk in the knowledge that Jesus is victorious and he is part of the pure, spotless bride of Christ if he is saved. It s easy to act defeated after sinning, but Romans 8 reminds us that as Christians, God sees us with no condemnation. Spend some time praying with your child, thanking God for the victory Christ won on the cross for his salvation and life. Lesson 8: Know Your Enemy 2012 Awana Clubs International 15

(The answer can be found under Male Child.) 9. Which description of Satan from Revelation 12 and 13 best describes how you think he has been working in your life? Why? (The answers will vary. Find help under Fast Fact.) 10. True/False. The False Prophet and the Antichrist will be able to imitate Christ s miracles. (The answer can be found under Beast From the Earth.) Lesson 8: Know Your Enemy 16

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 9: What Will It Take? Memory Verses: Revelation 15:3-4 In a Nutshell God s final judgments come on those who have rejected Christ. Summary This lesson covers Revelation 14-16. In Chapter 14 the millennial kingdom is inaugurated and the 144,000 mentioned earlier stand on Mt. Zion with Christ. Next, six angels give messages about God s wrath, love and people (both wicked and godly). Chapter 15 prepares the way for Chapter 16, where God s bowl judgments take place. Chapter 16 shows God s bowl judgments: malignant sores, water turning to blood, a scorching sun, darkness, invasion from the east and an earthquake. The Next Step The Fast Fact asks the students to look up the things mentioned as great. Do the exercise with your teenager over ice cream or at a museum where there are great paintings or a baseball game, where there are great plays. Get creative in your approach, tailoring it to your son s or daughter s interests. Lesson 9: What Will It Take? 2012 Awana Clubs International 17

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 10: Two Babylons Memory Verse: Revelation 18:5 In a Nutshell The two Babylons, false religion and worldly systems, are explained. Summary Revelation 17-18 covers religious and commercial Babylon. Religious Babylon is referred to as a prostitute. She is a religious institution of works. An angel announces the judgment for the city. While Satan will use this Babylon for his own ends, he will eventually destroy it in order to have sole glory in the second half of the tribulation. The commercial Babylon refers to the political and economic scene of the times. A second angel announces destruction for commercial Babylon, but before it falls, another heavenly voice encourages God s people to separate from this city. The Next Step You are now more than two-thirds through the book of Revelation and some of the chapters and judgments might be blending together. Make up a game to review what your teenager has learned. Quiz him over what each chapter is about or find a way to make trivia questions about the bowl judgments. After dinner one night this week, make the review fun! Lesson 10: Two Babylons 2012 Awana Clubs International 19

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 11: I Can Only Imagine Memory Verses: Revelation 19:6-7 In a Nutshell Jesus Christ returns to earth to defeat Satan s puppets and set up His millennial kingdom, after which He sends Satan to hell forever. Summary While the last few weeks have been about destruction, doom and God s judgment, this week s chapters (19-20) offer some hope. The chapters include songs of praise to God, a wedding celebration for the Church and the second coming of Christ. The students also learn about the battle of Armageddon where Christ defeats Satan. One thousand years pass during which Satan is bound. After 1,000 years passes, Satan is released and God defeats him once and for all. Following Satan s demise, God s final judgment will take place. The Next Step Using the various names that describe God in these chapters, do something creative. If your teenager likes to paint, let him paint a picture using the words. If he likes to write songs, help him write a song about the names of God. If he likes to do math, help him make a chart of the names of God and the references where they are found. Spend some time thanking God for His character and being. Lesson 11: I Can Only Imagine 2012 Awana Clubs International 21

TM Parent s Guide Revelation Lesson 12: New and Improved Memory Verse: Revelation 21:6 In a Nutshell God prepares a new heaven and a new earth and reigns forever. Summary Revelation 21 paints a picture of what the New Jerusalem will look like. It covers who the occupants are and a description of the place. Everything will be new there. No more sin, no more pain, no more hoping. It will be reality. As Revelation progressed, Christ s character and attributes were shown. We saw Him as Savior, Head of the Church, fulfillment of prophecy, Bridegroom, conqueror, judge over the wicked and God of eternity. Revelation ends with promises, blessings, an invitation, warning and a prayer. The Next Step Sit down as a family and come up with a list of things that are on earth but won t be in heaven. We tend to focus on sickness, death and unhappiness and it s very true that we ll have none of those through eternity. But don t forget about the little annoyances that we face all day every day headaches, waiting in lines, keys or the jobs that are important now but won t be needed then dentists, ambulance drivers, psychologists.
