Volume Fve God wth Us A Survey of Matthew Acts An Important Interlude Matthew to Revelaton The Heart of the Matter We now begn the second phase of our safar through Scrpture. Havng concluded our study of the Old Testament, we need to complete the pcture by gettng a grp on the New Testament... God s fnal word to humanty. Our desre s to see all twentyseven books as a whole, to see how they ft together, how they relate to us, and the value of each secton to the person who reads and beleves the Bble. Of specal nterest s the flow of thought carred through these books and letters of the New Testament. Obvously, these books revolve around the person and work of Chrst, the Son of God, who came (as promsed n the Old Testament); who lved, ded, arose, and ascended (as recorded n the Gospels); who revealed truth to lve by (as seen n Acts as well as the epstles); and who wll someday come agan (as foretold n Revelaton). Dscoverng the Way 1. Some Essental Informaton about the Bble (Luke 24:25 27, 44 46) Before we dve nto the New Testament, let s clarfy some key nformaton about Scrpture: the wrters and tme nvolved, the dvsons and language used, and the theme and means employed. Volume Fve God wth Us A Survey of Matthew Acts Matthew: Let s Meet the Kng A Survey of Matthew The Heart of the Matter As we undertake ths survey of the New Testament, we come frst to the four gospel accounts of the lfe of Jesus. They were wrtten to awaken and to strengthen fath n Chrst and to answer objectons and msconceptons about Hm. As the flame of Chrstanty spread rapdly beyond the Holy Land, the oral testmony of the apostles was no longer adequate; the truth concernng Chrst needed to be recorded n wrtten form. Matthew, a tax collector by trade, wrote hs book to emphasze Chrst, the Kng. The book ncludes numerous facts and expressons that would have appealed to the Jewsh reader. The fulfllment of Old Testament propheces and the presentaton of Jesus as Messah are clearly emphaszed by Matthew. When we understand the book of Matthew, we bow before Kng Jesus, the promsed Messah of Israel. Dscoverng the Way 1. A General Glance at All Four Gospels Wrtten to specfc audences and emphaszng dstnct themes, each of the four gospels contrbutes a partcular perspectve to our knowledge of Jesus. Eutheos s the Greek term repeated throughout the gospel of Mark, appearng nearly forty tmes. It means mmedately. Although the shortest of the four gospels, the book of Mark wastes no words portrayng the Savor as a servant to others. The tone s practcal, whch appealed to the Roman mnd. We want to observe the Servant at work n ths account of Hs lfe, notcng especally how clearly the key verse of the book (Mark 10:45) outlnes the two major phases of Hs earthly exstence and mnstry. Tools for Dggng Deeper Dscoverng the Way 1. Volume Fve God wth Us A Survey of Matthew Acts Luke: The Physcan s Opnon A Survey of Luke The Heart of the Matter Dr. Luke, Paul s travelng companon, was probably the only Gentle wrter of any part of the New Testament. Hs gospel focuses on provdng a complete account of the lfe of Jesus. Certanly, none of the other three evangelsts gave us a more detaled or descrptve analyss of the Savor s brth, chldhood, and manhood. The physcan, wrtng to Greeks, revealed hs own dstnctveness by (1) showng an uncommon nterest n varous ndvduals, (2) dsplayng an unusual emphass on medcal matters, (3) gvng a promnent place to women n hs account, and (4) emphaszng the humanty of our Lord durng Hs earthly plgrmage. As we mght expect, the frstcentury physcan was extremely careful n both hs research and the documentaton of hs facts. Luke s keen nterest n Chrst s teachngs provdes us wth a wealth of nsght behnd the scenes of Jesus s many parables. Dscoverng the Way 1. Volume Fve God wth Us A Survey of Matthew Acts John: That You May Beleve A Survey of John The Heart of the Matter A queston frequently asked by new Chrstans s, Whch book of the Bble should I study frst? Bble-translatng teams often ask a smlar queston: Whch book should we translate frst? Belevers occasonally wonder, Whch secton of Scrpture would be good for my non-chrstan frends to read? All three questons are usually answered the same way: the gospel of John. The fourth gospel s consdered a prmer on the essental bascs of Chrstanty. In the book of John, Chrst s clearly and preemnently exalted as dety. In smple (yet profound) terms, Jesus s set forth so that all may beleve that He s ndeed the Son of God. Hopefully, ths lesson, whch provdes a brd s-eye vew of the twenty-one chapters n John, wll help all of us realze that eternal lfe begns wth Chrst. Dscoverng the Way 1. Volume Fve God wth Us A Survey of Matthew Acts Acts: Lke a Mghty Army A Survey of Acts The Heart of the Matter All too often Chrstans look upon ther relgous roots wth much-too-low esteem. Intmdated by the gant boot-stompng of secular events that occupy the attenton of most hstory books, we entertan the false dea that the church of Jesus Chrst s lttle more than a pece of lnt on the page... a tny, fragle thread woven through the centures. Not so! The church s rather lke a mghty army marchng through tme delberately, confdently, vctorously... spurred on by the promse of ts Founder that the gates of Hades wll not overpower t. No other book n the Bble underscores the rchness and courage of our hstory better than the book of Acts. And no other book affrms more clearly our God-gven power to persevere. We may be small n number, but no remnant was ever surer of ts destny. Dscoverng the Way 1. Some Helpful Facts about Acts In approachng the book of Acts, t s best f we understand some key contrasts between ths book and the books of the Gospels.
