Luke Lesson 71 Chains Be Broken Lesson 1 1

Luke 16:19 31 (NASB95) 19 Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. 20 And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22 Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried out and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus 2

bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us. 27 And he said, Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father s house 28 for I have five brothers in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. 29 But Abraham said, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them. 30 But he said, No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent! 31 But he said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead. Consider, young man, as you walk by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, you soon shall be, so prepare, young man to follow me. To follow you is not my intent; until I know which way you went! In a speech to the National Press Club, Ted Turner in said, Heaven is going to be a mighty slender place. And most of the people I know in life aren t going to be there. There are a few notable exceptions and I ll miss them. Remember, heaven is going to be perfect. And I don t really want to be there...those of us that go to hell, which 3

will be most of us in this room; most journalists are certainly going there. But, when we get to hell we ll have a chance to make things better because hell is supposed to be a mess. And heaven is perfect. Who wants to go to a place that s perfect? Boring. Boring. C. S. Lewis once saw scripted on a gravestone: Here lies an atheist all dressed up and no where to go. Hebrews 9:27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, Luke 16: 19 Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. Numbers 16:31 33 (NASB95) 31 As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open; 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah with their possessions. 4

33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive to Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. 1 Samuel 28:11 (NASB95) 11 Then the woman said, Whom shall I bring up for you? And he said, Bring up Samuel for me. Isaiah 14:15 (NASB95) 15 Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit. Job 26:5 (NASB95) 5 The departed spirits tremble under the waters and their inhabitants. Psalm 89:48 (NASB95) 48 What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Genesis 49:33 (NASB95) 33 When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people. Genesis 15:15 (NASB95) 15 As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. 5

Deuteronomy 32:22 (NASB95) 22 For a fire is kindled in My anger, And burns to the lowest part of Sheol, And consumes the earth with its yield, And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains. John 13:23 25 (NASB95) 23 There was reclining on Jesus bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter gestured to him, and said to him, Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking. 25 He, leaning back thus on Jesus bosom, said to Him, Lord, who is it? Luke 23:42 43 (NASB95) 42 And he was saying, Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom! 43 And He said to him, Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise. 2 Corinthians 12:3 4 (NASB95) 3 And I know how such a man whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows 4 was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak. Ephesians 4:8 10 (NASB95) 8 Therefore it says, WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN. 9 (Now this expression, He ascended, what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) 6

Revelation 1:17 18 (NASB95) 17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18 and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. 1 Peter 3 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, John 20:17 17 Jesus said to her, Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God. 2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. Phil. 1:22 But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. 23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; Revelation 20:11 15 (NASB95) 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 7

12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Luke 16:24 And he cried out and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us. Matt. 8:12 but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Job 10:21 22 (NASB95) 21 Before I go and I shall not return To the land of darkness and deep shadow, 8

22 The land of utter gloom as darkness itself, Of deep shadow without order, And which shines as the darkness. Mark 9:43 (ESV) 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. Matthew 13:41 42 (ESV) 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all lawbreakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Luke 16:27 And he said, Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father s house 28 for I have five brothers in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. Acts 4 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: Rulers and elders of the people! 9

9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. 13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God s sight to obey you rather than God. 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard. Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 23:37"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Revelations 21:4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." 10
