Transcription:

Third Sunday of Advent In Scandinavia In Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland, Lucy (called Lucia) is venerated on December 13 in a ceremony where a girl is elected to portray Lucia. Wearing a white gown with a red sash and a crown of candles on her head, she walks at the head of a procession of women, each holding a candle. The candles symbolize the fire that refused to take St. Lucia's life when she was sentenced to be burned. The women sing a Lucia song while entering the room, to the melody of the traditional Neapolitan song Santa Lucia; the Italian lyrics describe the view from Santa Lucia in Naples, the various Scandinavian lyrics are fashioned for the occasion, describing the light with which Lucia overcomes the darkness. Each Scandinavian country has lyrics in their native tongues. After finishing this song, the procession sings Christmas carols or more songs about Lucia. A similar version occurs in Scandinavian communities and churches in the Island The Holy Eucharist: Rite II with Sacramental Healing December 15, 2013 Trinity Episcopal Church 218 East Benton Street, Aurora, IL 60505 (630) 897-7283 www.trinityaurora.org Welcoming God s children since 1849

St. Lucia lyrics Hark! through the darksome night Sounds come a wingeing: Lo! 'tis the Queen of Light joyfully singing. Clad in her garment white, wearing her crown of light, Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia! Deep in the northern sky Bright stars are beaming; Christmas is drawing nigh, Candles are gleaming. Welcome thou vision rare, Lights glowing in thy hair, Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia! The night goes with weighty step round yard and hearth, round earth, the sun departs Shadows are brooding There in our dark house, Walking with lit candles, Saint Lucia, Saint Lucia. (continued) The darkness shall soon depart from the earth's valleys thus she speaks a wonderful word to us The day shall rise anew from the rosy sky. Saint Lucia, Saint Lucia Night walks grand, yet silent, Now hear its gentle wings, In every room so hushed, Whispering like wings. Look, at our threshold stands, White-clad with light in her hair, Look, at our threshold stands, White-clad with light in her hair, Darkness shall take flight soon, From earth's valleys. So she speaks Wonderful words to us: A new day will rise again From the rosy sky A new day will rise again From the rosy sky
