THE BASICS PHILOSOPHY OF THE ORGANIZATION REGARDING HAZING Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity is a values-based membership develpment rganizatin that fcuses n building brtherhd thrugh character enhancement, leadership develpment, academic achievement, cmmitment t service, lifelng friendship and scial experiences. The Fraternity s purpse and aim is t prmte fellwship and mutual trust amng its members, and Pi Kappa Phi fundamentally believes hazing prevents individual members and chapters frm exemplifying these characteristics f brtherhd. Striving t be a respnsible member f the higher educatin cmmunity, Pi Kappa Phi is highly cncerned abut any activity that culd be cnsidered mentally, physically, r emtinally unsafe. Our Fraternity believes very strngly in the betterment f men thrugh ur chapters. Our rganizatin uphlds the fllwing philsphy specifically related t hazing: The Fraternity is unequivcally ppsed t all acts f hazing and expects ur members t fllw the laws acrss the United States that have made hazing illegal. As an rganizatin funded n the principles f friendship, the Fraternity expects that all members treat each ther with dignity and respect, regardless f their membership classificatin r level f senirity within the rganizatin. The Fraternity supprts and enhances the missin f the institutins where we are present thrugh applicatin f relevant student develpment theries. As a subset f the campus cmmunity, the Fraternity cllabrates with the hst institutin t address the prblem f hazing. The Fraternity wrks t address the underlying causes f hazing, and nt simply the bservable behavirs. As such, Pi Kappa Phi utilizes a cmprehensive educatinal apprach that reinfrces the Fraternity s cncern fr human dignity and mutual respect amng its members. Thrugh educatin, training, and mature adult guidance, we prvide the tls t help students make gd chices, and t understand the cnsequences f their chices. The rganizatin will hld chapters and individual chapter members accuntable fr the chices they make. The Fraternity expects persnal respnsibility frm its members and accuntability thrugh lcal self gvernance within the bundaries established by Pi Kappa Phi s Cnstitutin, Supreme Laws, and Natinal Cuncil plicies. The Fraternity fllws a cnsistent and prgressive discipline strategy with ur chapters. When a member r subrdinate chapter is unable t cnfrm t the expectatins f Pi Kappa Phi, hwever, the cnduct prcess may determine that they shuld n lnger share in the privilege f participating in the Fraternity. We are cncerned fr the safety, well being, and dignity f ur members. PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY RISK MANAGEMENT POLICY N chapter, assciate chapter, student, alumnus, r vlunteer shall cnduct nr cndne hazing activities. UNDERSTANDING THE STANDARDS BOARD (10 minutes) In rder fr Pi Kappa Phi t be successful, each member must demnstrate persnal integrity and ultimate respect in his daily life. T ensure each member is living by ur values, we have established standards f cnduct. Members are expected t hld each ther accuntable t these standards. There are times when all members f the chapter, especially its leaders, must draw the line between the emtins f brtherhd and the necessities f respnsibility. It is difficult t d smetimes, but a crucial bligatin f all members f Pi Kappa Phi. Brtherhd, as it exists between a chapter and a member, is a partnership. When a man is carrying his weight, paying his dues, making gd grades, and psitively cntributing t the Fraternity, he can expect full benefits. Hwever, when he fails t d these things, he must expect the chapter t hld him accuntable. The Student Creed clearly summarizes ur shared standards and values as members f Pi Kappa Phi. These are the basic expectatins f membership; therefre, the Student Creed shuld guide yur everyday actins. The chapter standards bard is the peer grup that is charged with maintaining the fraternity s standards. The cmpsitin f the Standards Bard is a diverse crss-sectin f the chapter that accurately represents the varying interests and age levels within. The Standards Bard has five (5) members: Standards Bard Chairman Sergeant-at-Arms receives any frmal Cmplaints frm members f the chapter and delivers cmmunicatin between the Bard and individual members Scribe takes the fficial minutes f each Standards Bard meeting; accurately recrds cases and utcmes in the chapter recrds; cmpletes apprpriate Standards Bard paperwrk as necessary Tw (2) additinal members
WHO KILLED JUSTIN SMITH (45 minutes) Setup/Supplies Needed Wh Killed Justin Smith? handut Pi Kappa Phi Risk Management Plicy Basics handut Wh Is t Blame? 20 minutes Distribute the Wh Killed Justin Smith? handut. Break assciate members int grups f 4-5. Each grup shuld read the scenari and gain cnsensus n wh is t blame fr Justin s death. If yu receive questins abut whether the rankings are based n legal respnsibility, suffering, r mral bligatin, tell the assciate members t cmplete the activity hwever they prefer. After 15 minutes, bring the assciate members back tgether, and ask: Wh is t blame fr Justin Smith s death? The assciate members will likely yell ut, Justin. At this pint, yu can agree; but remind the assciate members that Justin is already dead, s: Wh else is t blame? Ask each persn wh shares why they ranked the individual where they did. There is n right answer in this scenari. After 5 minutes, mve n t the next prtin f the activity. Mre imprtant than simply determining wh is respnsible fr Justin s death, hwever, is figuring ut what culd have been dne t prevent his death. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Risk Management Plicy 20 minutes Pi Kappa Phi has a risk management plicy, which is intended t keep ur members safe. The assciate member shuld again wrk in their assigned grups. After 10 minutes, bring the assciate members back tgether, and ask: What risk management rules did the chapter vilate in this scenari? Crrect answers include: Rule #10 Dry Assciate Member Activities Christian decided t have a pledge event with a quiz and lineup that night with sme alchl. Family drinks were imprtant t keeping the family united and [Sctt] had given Justin a fifth f whiskey earlier in the evening befre the lineup. Rule #1 Dn t Break the Law Justin Smith, age 19. Rule #4 Dn t Serve t Minrs Justin Smith, age 19. Hazing Plicy Christian decided t have a pledge event with a lineup that night. What culd the chapter have dne t reduce their risk in this scenari? Pssible answers include: Set clear expectatins fr Big Brthers that family drinks are prhibited Dn t prvide alchl t assciate members Require the Warden t discuss the upcming week s assciate member activities with the Executive Cuncil and chapter each week Hw was bystander behavir invlved in this scenari? Pssible answers include: Brthers f Zeta Delta Chapter Many f the brthers cmmented abut hw much [Justin] culd drink and mre than a few had escrted/carried him hme frm past parties and accmpanied him as he threw up.
Christian, the Warden Christian decided t have a pledge event with a quiz and lineup that night with sme alchl. Chase, a pledge brther Nbdy ever tld him nt t pass the bttle t his pledge brther if he was already clearly intxicated. Justin didn t lk any drunker than anyne else at the pledge event. He was having truble answering questins asked by the brthers, but n mre than his ther pledge brthers were having. Tyler, the Archn Tyler felt bad fr nt supervising all pledging activities. Sctt, his Big Brther Family drinks were imprtant t keeping the family united and he had given Justin a fifth f whiskey earlier in the evening befre the lineup. Lri, his girlfriend She had thught abut calling his parents r cntacting the Directr f Fraternity Life n the campus, but had nt dne it based n Justin urging her that everything was OK. Justin s parents He started drinking during his sphmre year f high schl. They knew he had been hazed as part f this high schl ftball team but didn t think it was a big deal. Justin s dad had been hazed when he was jining a fraternity in cllege. But, what culd parents d when they were 200 miles away? As members f Pi Kappa Phi, yu have a respnsibility t nt nly fllw the Fraternity s plicies, but als t help keep yur brthers safe.
ULTIMATE RESPECT (15 minutes) The mst challenging aspect f hlding brthers accuntable is cming away frm the interactin with a psitive feeling. Usually, smene will be unhappy and will be vcal f his displeasure. Whatever the reasn, there will be times when yu need t speak hnestly with all persnal feelings aside. The Fraternity has a unique mechanism t assist with this accuntability; that mechanism is Ultimate Respect. Ultimate respect is when (1) the well-being f the fraternity r an individual brther is put ahead f the friendship; and/r (2) yu realize that the unpleasantness f shrt-term cnflict is acceptable cmpared t the lng-term ramificatins f inactin. Ultimate Respect is an bligatin fr any man f Pi Kappa Phi and we can use the fllwing as a guide t help infrm this prcess. At its heart, the cncept f Ultimate Respect is abut prductive cnflict and recgnitin f the greater gd and is t be used when a brther is exhibiting behavirs nt in accrdance with his wn values r the values and expectatins f Pi Kappa Phi. Because f the trust intrinsic in Pi Kappa Phi, members can engage in prductive cnflict thrugh Ultimate Respect. This prductive cnflict encurages members t hld each ther accuntable and put aside chapter plitics, allwing members t chse their wrds and actins based n what they really think rather than n hw they want thers t react. And nly thrugh a recgnitin f the greater need t prtect the well-being f the Fraternity r an individual brther can members truly identify pprtunities t engage each ther in Ultimate Respect Cnsider having tw initiated members share hw ultimate respect has bettered their chapter experience Ultimately, yur respnsibility as a leader and a brther is t prvide gd infrmatin, t ffer respect and encuragement, and t uphld the rganizatin s standards and values. It is nt yur jb t teach a cllege-aged man the basics f respnsibility but t hld him accuntable t the prmises he has made in the spirit f Ultimate Respect. True brtherhd is drawing the line s as t never cmprmise ur standards.
ULTIMATE RESPECT IN ACTION (60-90 minutes) The Warden and the members f the Assciate Member Educatin Cmmittee shuld participate with the assciate members. Have everyne line up in tw even lines facing each ther. Each persn will have 2 minutes t describe hw the persn facing him has impacted him thus far in the assciate member educatin prcess. Fr 1 minute, each persn shuld share with the member acrss frm him why he likes him. Fr the next minute, each persn shuld suggest an area in which the ther member culd imprve. Being truthful during the activity, even thugh smetimes uncmfrtable, is essential. The persn wh is receiving feedback may nt respnd t the ther member. He will have his pprtunity t share his feedback when it is his turn. This is why the exercise is called Ultimate Respect. Emphasize that the infrmatin shared with each f the peple in the rm is cnfidential and shuld nt be discussed with anyne ther than the persn with whm yu are sharing it. Once each persn in the pair has shared, everyne rtates ne persn t his right, until each member has had an pprtunity t share his feedback with everyne else participating. At the cnclusin f the activity, the Warden shuld ffer a brief prayer and dismiss the assciate members. There shuld NOT be any additinal debrief, lengthy discussin, r questin and answer perid.
SUGGESTED SUBORDINATE RITUALS Dead Huse Student Creed Ultimate Respect The Man in the Glass Debrief The mst imprtant part f a sub-ritual is the debrief. It is extremely pivtal that the meaning behind each sub-ritual be discussed with the chapter. D nt assume that the members understd the lessn; talk abut the lessn and have the members share their feelings and thughts. It is during this time that true grwth and develpment takes place. Therefre, a thrugh debrief shuld fllw EVERY subrdinate ritual perfrmed by the chapter. What? S What? Nw What? What happened? Dissect what happened thrughut the activity, what was bserved, what they were feeling, what symbls were present, etc. Why are these things imprtant? Hw d they tie back t the values f Pi Kappa Phi and the tenants f The Student Creed? What impact d they have n individual members? What impact d they have n the chapter? What impact d they have n the natinal fraternity? What d yu d nw? Hw can yu apply these cncepts, values, lessns, etc. utside f the subritual? Hw d they apply t yur fraternity experience? Hw d they apply t yur cllege experience? Hw d they apply t the real wrld and life after cllege? What shuld they d with this lessn?
