Dear Friends, In case you were not in worship last Sunday, let me bring you the great news! Forest Lake Presbyterian Church has extended a call to Michael East to become our Associate Pastor for Service, Care and Discipleship! Michael is a recent graduate of Austin Theological Seminary (our PC(USA) seminary in Texas). He grew up in Oklahoma, where his mother taught school and his father was a pharmacist. He was raised in both the Catholic (his mother) and Presbyterian (his father) streams of the Christian Church. In sixth grade, Michael was confirmed in the PC(USA) and was elected an elder in his home church at 15. Michael met his wife, Katie, while they were both on staff at the Presbytery s Summer Camp (Eastern Oklahoma s version of our Camp Fellowship). On Sunday, after making their report, the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee [Caroline Streater, Eric Shytle, Bobby Counts and Margaret Harris] received a round of applause. I expect that Michael will begin working at Forest Lake on Wednesday, October 8 th, and I know you will join me in making both Michael and Katie feel welcomed to their new South Carolina home! But, even though our own congregation has voted, there are a couple more steps that must happen for Michael s call to Forest Lake to be completed and certain. The next step is for Michael to be presented and examined by Trinity Presbytery at the stated meeting of the Presbytery on Tuesday, October 7 th. Michael will give a brief meditation during the opening worship that morning at 9:30 and then he will be presented for examination at noon. You are all invited to attend this meeting of Trinity Presbytery which will be at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church [2721 Dutch Fork Road, Chapin, SC 29036]. You can come to hear Michael preach at 9:30 or come for his official examination and reception at noon. You do not need to stay for the entire meeting, but are welcome to come if you are able for the whole thing or for a portion. Michael will be in worship here at Forest Lake on Sunday, October 12 th and preach on the next Sunday, October 19 th. After the 11:00am worship on October 19 th, the Search Committee is working on holding a congregational lunch and a pounding for Michael and Katie. A pounding is not a thrashing, but is an old hospitality custom where the community brings things to help them fill their pantry and set up housekeeping a pound of sugar or a package of paper towels! Plan to come to that luncheon and if you can volunteer to help set up or clean up, please contact Caroline Streater or Margaret Harris. Finally, although Michael has finished seminary and all of the required exams, he has not yet been ordained as a Teaching Elder. He and Katie will travel back to Oklahoma in late October or early November to be ordained in his home congregation. Then, we will install Michael as our Associate Pastor on Sunday, November 16 th during our 11:00 worship service. Forest Lake Presbyterian Church has long been a teaching congregation. Just as this congregation taught and loved Chris Peters, who will be ordained here on Sunday, October 12 th at 3pm, so now we have the chance to love and to teach Michael. Copies of the brochure introducing Michael are in the downstairs lobby at church if you d like to read more about Michael and Katie. I am looking forward to what God has planned for this new chapter in FLPC s life! Join me in praying for that! See you in Church! Ellen Ellen F. Skidmore Forest Lake Presbyterian Church 6500 North Trenholm Road Columbia, SC 29206 (803) 787-5672 www.flpc.org Proclaiming the good news of God's love in Jesus Christ, to build a fellowship of Christian Love, and to serve this community and the world in the spirit of the Servant Christ.

I want to thank you for coordinating the volunteer work that the generous parishioners of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church have recently provided at Children s Garden Child Development Center. We appreciate your support and hope that we can work with your church again as we all work towards improving the lives of our fellow Midlands residents who are less fortunate than we are. Thanks again, Jeremy C. Hodges World Communion Sunday & Peacemaking Offering - October 5, 2014 The Peacemaking Offering supports the peacemaking efforts of the church at every governing body level and provides an opportunity to witness to God's gift of peace in the world. Gifts given to the Peacemaking Offering through a congregation are divided in the following manner - 25 percent retained by congregations for support of their own peacemaking ministry; 25 percent used to support presbytery and synod peacemaking efforts; and 50 percent forwarded to the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program of the Presbyterian Mission Agency so that it can continue to provide assistance and resources for congregations and other bodies of the PC (USA). If your organization or Ministry has something that they want to share with the congregation, remember that we have four distinct display places in the upstairs Connecting Point Lobby. If you have a sign-up or event information that you want others to see and/or pick up, remember that you need to plan ahead and reserve a spot. To do that, go to the Connecting Point Desk. In the drawer of that desk is a clipboard that defines the four display spots and lists dates. You reserve the specific spot and the weeks for the display. The display spaces are normally on a first-come, first-served basis. If there is a problem with this system, speak to the staff liaison who assists your Ministry for help. Our goal is to avoid card tables or other free standing displays to keep our side lobby looking neat and interesting. The person who puts the display up is also responsible for taking it down to make room for whomever comes next on the list. Pam Bowman, our Connecting Point Volunteer Desk Coordinator, and Jodi Beckham, our Discipleship Coordinator, can answer your questions, and they would be delighted to have your help in staffing this very important evangelistic ministry on Sunday Mornings! Help us get the good news about Forest Lake out to everyone who comes to our building!
