February 2, 2014 Month of the Passion of our Lord The Presentation Of The Lord First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4 Second Reading: Hebrews 2:14-18 Gospel: Luke 2:22-40 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Becoming a member of the Catholic Church for adults is by a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This process is for those who are not already baptized and those baptized in most other Christian faiths. This year five people were in the inquiry stage of the process. They have been attending classes to learn more about what Catholics believe about Jesus and his Church. Recently they each have decided they would like to move forward with the next stage of becoming either Catechumens (for those who seek to be baptized) or Candidates (for those already baptized and desiring full communion with the Catholic Church.) The Catechumens are: Katherine Parker William Parker The Candidates for Full Communion are: Kimberly Abadir Kathryn Baker Emma Brown Hannah Leland Please pray for these Catechumens and Candidates as they continue their journey of conversion. February 2, 2014 OUR LADY OF FATIMA SCHOOL NEWS We have been celebrating National Catholic Schools Week at OLF. We started on Monday with a wonderful Grandparents & Special Friends Day assembly. Our students gave readings and provided music and dance. We were delighted to present our 5th annual Dedication to Catholic Education Certificate to parishioner and former Fatima parent Mary Welch in recognition of her contribution to Catholic education both here at Fatima and as part of the Archdiocese of Seattle's school board. Our service project this week continues. We are collecting blankets and socks for youth living on our streets. All are welcome at the R.E.A.C.H. Fair (Respecting Ethnic and Cultural Heritage) highlighting family history projects completed by our 7th and 8th grade students on Thursday, Jan. 30th, at 6 p.m. in the gym. We want to congratulate again our Speech Team members for their outstanding overall performance at the recent Seattle Prep Speech Tournament. OLF received "Best Overall Team Performance." 8th grader Stuart S. was selected "top boy" and received a $2,500 scholarship. For 1st place in Senior Oratory, 8th grader Stephen S. received a $1,000 scholarship. We are proud of everyone who placed, was a finalist, or helped with our school's overall win! If you have a 5th grader either at Fatima or elsewhere, be sure to save the date of Monday, February 24th for our Middle School Information Meeting. We'll be providing information and talking about what it means to be in grades 6-8 at Fatima. Our Annual Endowment Fund Appeal is underway. Look for a letter coming to you soon from Father Phil and Mrs. Burdett. Thank you to everyone who is supporting our school! The Good Shepherd Preschool at Our Lady of Fatima is accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year. Next year s sessions are filling up but there are some openings in the afternoons from 12:15 to 3:15. Good Shepherd Preschool is centered on Catechesis of the Good Shepherd which is an approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Our Montessori classroom welcomes all children between 3 and 5 years old. Please contact Gina Sheh at gsheh@olfatima.org for more information, or visit the school website to download an application http://school.olfatima.org/preschool.php Please join us in the OLF gym on Saturday, February 8th, 6-8:30PM for a FATHER DAUGHTER DANCE for dessert, dancing and fun! $50 per family. MUSIC MINISTRY FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Formerly called the Purification of Mary, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord has been celebrated since the fourth century, beginning in Jerusalem. In accordance with Jewish Law, Joseph and Mary presented their firstborn son to the Temple Priest 4o days following his birth. In the 11 th century, the church began blessing candles prior to the entrance procession culminating in a candle lit procession. This is why this feast is often referred to as Candlemass. During the procession, the faithful joyously sing Psalm 118 The Lord will come to us with mighty power as well as the Canticle of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis - Luke 2:29-32): "Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; because my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: a light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel." 50th ANNIVERSARY OF VATICAN II THE MASS OF VATICAN II (continued ) Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J. - President of Ignatious Press Nine Proposals of Vatican II Paragraphs 50 to 58 (Vatican II: Sacrosanctum Concilium) contain nine specific changes by the Council: #1 (Paragraph 51): The treasures of the Bible are to be opened up more fully. That has been accomplished by a greater number of readings both in the Sunday and weekday cycles. #2 (Paragraph 52): The homily is to be highly esteemed as part of the Liturgy itself. Paragraph 53 says that the Common Prayer or Prayer of the Faithful should be restored, and that's been done, too. #3 (Paragraph 54) is a key paragraph: "In Masses which are celebrated with the people, a suitable place may be allotted to their mother tongue." (What did the Council have in mind?): "This is to apply in the first place, to the readings and to the Common Prayer. But also as local conditions may warrant, to those parts which pertain to the people. Nevertheless steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass" - (that is, the unchanging parts, the parts that are there every day) - "which pertain to them." (The full article will be posted on the Music Website. www.olfatima.org/music) PROPERS PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (Candlemass) PRESCRIBED ANTIPHONS The Propers are Antiphons from the Roman Missal which accompany the three processions which occur during Mass: the Entrance Procession (Introit), the Presentation of the Gifts (Offertory) and the Communion Procession ( Communio ). The texts are taken directly from sacred scripture; most often from the Book of Psalms. Like the Readings, these Antiphons are assigned to each Liturgical celebration. Our Lady of Fatima Parish was the first Parish in the Seattle Archdiocese (since Vatican II) to sing all the prescribed Antiphons at every liturgical celebration. INTROIT: ECCE ADVENIT Behold, the sovereign Lord is coming; kingship, government and power are in His hands! OFFERTORY: DIFFUSA EST GRATIA Grace has been poured out on your lips. Therefore God has blessed you forever, world without end. COMMUNIO : RESPONSUM Simeon had received a revelation from the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. PSALM 100: Serve the Lord with gladness come before Him with joyful singing! This February, I celebrate my 20 th Anniversary serving the Catholic Church as Director of Music. I feel extremely fortunate to have ministered to Christ s holy people in this capacity and am grateful for the love and support shown to me and my family from the people of Our Lady of Fatima Parish these past years! It is an honor to celebrate Holy Mass with such exceptional people. Please continue to pray for all our Music Ministers as they share their many gifts for the greater glory of God! Matthew Loucks
