A Letter from Father. Page 2 July 6, 2014 MAY YOU HAVE A HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY AND A WONDERFUL SUMMER! Thank you for your generosity for St. Francis Parish. May God bless you for sharing and caring week after week with your thoughtfulness and support. On this Independence Day, I invite you to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, as she is the Patroness of the United States of America. God had truly blessed us with liberty and opportunity in this great nation. We must remember that freedom is never free and we should never take it for granted, especially when we recall all of our loved ones who have sacrificed to serve and those still serving our country in the defense of liberty. In 1776, our founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, securing our freedoms of religion, democracy, politics and unity, under God. By invoking God, they sought His guidance and spiritual strength for our country. This document is our beacon of hope. It is a privilege to live in a free country which makes it possible for us to openly express our opinions, right or wrong, without fear of repercussions. Celebrations on the Fourth of July always include picnics, concerts and lots of spectacular fireworks. The following story reflects why we should simplify our efforts and concentrate on enjoying one another: One Fourth of July, a loving, dedicated mother decided that she would have a party for the neighbors at their summer place by the lake. She hoped that she could start a tradition and do that every year. One of the kids said, Let s have pizza, as kids always say. Her husband said, We can grill some hamburgers. That s easy, which is what he always said. No, said the mother, We should have a really nice dinner, which she always said. The rest of the family thought that beef bourgeon was a little much for a Fourth of July dinner. There was no reason to clean up the house like it was just before Christmas. If they had to have Caesar salad, couldn t you make it out of a bag? Was it really necessary to bake potatoes? Wouldn t potato salad be just as good? Couldn t you buy the apple pies at the bakery instead of making a half dozen of them? And what would be wrong with packaged pie crust? It turned out that the party was a feast which everyone enjoyed. However, they would have enjoyed it a lot more if the mother wasn t so worn out that she didn t have any fun. More important than making everything so perfect and waiting on our family and guests, is enjoying them and loving them. We should never be so busy that we have no time to love. As we celebrate Independence Day, let us pray for all of those who have sacrificed their lives so that you and I may live and worship freely. Let us thank our Blessed Mother for all the ways she has blessed our lives and our nation. May this spirit of joy continue throughout the summer months. May God bless you and God bless the United States of America! Peace and joy,

Parish & Community Activities Page 3 July 6, 2014 On the Lighter Side. A painter was hired to do some work on the local Catholic church. To recoup the cost of the discount he had given the church, he diluted his paint with turpentine. One day while he was up on the scaffolding, almost finished with the job, he heard a horrendous clap of thunder and the sky opened. The rain washed the thinned paint off the church and knocked the painter off his scaffold and onto the ground below. He knew this was a warning from the Almighty, so he got on his knees and cried: Forgive me Lord! What should I do? And from above the clouds boomed a voice: REPAINT! REPAINT! AND THIN NO MORE! ST. STEWARDSHIP GIVING PRAYER Good and gracious God, we thank you for all we are and all we have. Everything is a gift from your infinite generosity. We marvel at how bountiful your kindness is. We rest in appreciation of your enduring mercy. As we explore our responsibility to be good stewards, fill us with the compassion of Jesus, your Son. Give us eyes to see the needs of those around us, in the faces of our neighbors near and far. Give us hearts that are moved by the pleas of those who cry out - on behalf of the children, the refugees, the sick and the suffering. Give us hands that are eager to share what has been entrusted to us. Give us feet to venture wherever the Spirit leads for the mission to bring your Good News to all. As we resolve to be mindful of the needs of others, we pray that You instill in us your generosity, your kindness and your mercy. Keep us focused in our mission of good stewardship. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 July 6, 2014 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Confirmation is complicated, at least in its history. It arose in response to real problems deeply felt, not the least of which was the desire of the bishop to minister to all who were baptized. But it also has to do with the early crisis of how to deal with persons baptized by congregations that had broken bonds with the greater church: heretics. People reasoned that no matter how wrong headed the minister might be, Christ would always work in the waters of baptism. No matter what, God would sweep aside all human obstacles to claim the new life in the water. They were not so sure about the ability of someone who had broken with the church to confer the Spirit. By the fifth century, already-baptized persons coming into the church were anointed with chrism but not rebaptized. This anointing with myron or chrism was seen as an act of reconciliation by the church and a seal upon the commitments vowed by the newcomer. Today, we preserve this ancient practice by never rebaptizing Christians who have been baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We affirm the candidates baptismal dignity and we celebrate confirmation at their first reception of the Eucharist. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. SETTING ASIDE THE WEAPONS OF WAR Why, we might ask the prophet Zechariah today, would God want to banish chariots and horses? The answer follows: because they are used to violate God s reign of peace, along with the warrior s bow. In the days of Zechariah, chariots and horses were high-priced items used only for war-making. They were the aircraft carriers and nuclear missiles of his day. And for his culture, which thought of any king as being a military leader first and foremost, a king riding on a lowly beast of burden to proclaim peace without horses, chariots and bows would have set his listeners topsy-turvy. This lowly, beast-riding king of peace, we believe, was fulfilled in Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. In a world torn by military strife often generated by differing religious views and even in our own lives and homes where we are often at war over the tiniest things, we would do well to stop and consider to what degree we are willing to be like that king whose way of gentleness and humility is the way for us to find rest for our weary souls.
