1 Holy Qur an 1.1 Shaddah The sign is called Tashdid is a sign of emphasis. It is functionally equivalent of writing the letter twice in other languages. To pronounce a letter with Tashdid, first the voice will be settled on it and then will be read with the short vowel as marked above the shaddah 1.2 Special case nün and mïm In case of nün and mïm bearing shaddah, the settling on the letters will take a little longer, in other words the voice will be prolonged on them before reading them with their short vowel. This rule explained is also called Rule of Ghunnah, Ghunnah means continuous nasal sound for about 2 seconds - 2 These the two letters Mïm and Nün are called Mïm Ghunnah and Nün Ghunnah

2 Islamic Studies: 2.1 Learning and Teaching the Holy Quran The Holy Quran says: So We have made it (the Qur an) easy in thy tongue that thou mayest give thereby good tidings to the righteous, and warn thereby a people given to contention. 19:38 Hadith 1: Nawas ibn Sama an relates that he heard the Holy Prophet (saw) say: The Quran will be summoned on the Day of Judgment along with those who kept it company in this life and acted in conformity with it. It will be heralded by the second and third chapters and these will plead on behalf of those who kept company with them (Muslim) Hadith 2: Uthman ibn Affan relates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said: The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it Hadith 3: Abu Musa relates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said: Safeguard the Quran in your memories, for by Him in Whose hands is the life of Muhammad, it escapes sooner form memory than does a camel from its rope (Bukhari and Muslim) Ø All Muslims must understand the treasure that is the Quran. It is the word of Allah and is a source for all guidance. As such, it is the duty of each Muslim to learn the Quran, be able to read it and understand its meaning. We read the Yassarnal Quran first to recite Arabic, and then we read the Quran in Arabic and try to read it alongside the translation in our native language (like English or Spanish). After we are able to read and understand the Quran, we then study the commentary as well. The most comprehensive commentary to date is the commentary by our own second khalifa as well as the commentary provided by the Promised Messiah (as). Ø As the Holy Prophet (saw) has said, it is a great achievement to be able to teach the Quran. However, keep in mind, that to truly learn and teach the Quran with success, one must also conform to its teachings. Only these people will accompany the Quran on the Day of Judgment. Ø Learning the Quran means more than simply being able to read it. It is important to do one s best to read the Quran pleasantly and slowly, but it is also important to memorize as much as possible. The Holy Prophet (saw) has said to safeguard the Quran in your memories. In fact, this was what happened when the Quran was first revealed. Many of the first Muslims memorized the entirety of the Quran and this was the method used to safeguard it. The Holy Quran clearly states that memorization is not a difficult task as the Quran has been made easy in thy tongue. The Quran states that the reason the Quran has been made easy to recite and 11
understand is so that the revelation of glad tidings to the righteous and the warnings for those prone to evil are easily spread. The Promised Mesiah (AS) says: It is important to teach more than just Arabic. In other words, it is of equal importance that we should teach the arguments to defend against Christians as well as debunk Christian belief. However, Arabic is still required as one cannot go around without an understanding of the verses, which come to aid all arguments. One cannot draw full benefit from just reading the translation of the Holy Quran. The branches of knowledge which are subservient to the Holy Quran should also be acquired. The Holy Quran and the Hadees should be studied with full understanding of their meaning as well as significance. (Malfoozat Vol. 8, pg. 329) 2.2 Ninety Nine Attributes of Allah Allah has described Himself in the Holy Qur an through His Names and Attributes. Muslims believe that studying these Names and Attributes is one of the most effective ways of strengthening one s relationship with God. The Qur an says, The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on Him by them. (7:180) Muslims are asked to call upon God during their prayers by using the most appropriate names that relate to what they are asking for. For example, if someone is seeking forgiveness from God for a sin they have committed, they should call upon Him by His name Al-Ghaffar, meaning The Ever 12
Forgiving. If one is asking for peace and tranquility in their life while experiencing some tension they should call on God by His name As-Salaam, meaning The Ultimate Source of Peace The Holy One, The Most Pure The Most Perfect (59:24, 20:114) The Source of Peace and Safety The Peace and Blessing, The Most Perfect (59:23) The Self Affirming, The Granter of Security The Affirmer of Truth (59:23) The Guardian, The Preserver The Overseeing Protector (59:23) The Almighty, The Self Sufficient The Most Honorable (3:6, 4:158, 9:40, 48:7, 59:23) The Powerful, The Most Lofty The Improver of Affairs (59:23) The Exalted, The Tremendous (59:23) 13
The Creator (6:102, 13:16, 39:62, 40:62, 59:24) The Rightful (59:24) The Fashioner of Forms (59:24) 14

3 Comtemporary Studies: Speaking Truth 3.1 Respecting Parents Allah says in the Holy Qur'an: The Lord has decreed that you worship none save Him alone, and behave beneficently towards parents. If either or both of them should attain old age while you are alive, say not `ugh' to them, nor chide them, and speak kindly to them. Lower to them the wing of humility out of tenderness and pray: Lord have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was little. (17:25) These verses are most significant on this subject. After the unity of God, human beings should, through their attitude of love, affection, and kindness, give priority over all other things to their parents who have reached an old and difficult age. Further, the verses speak of the situations even when the behavior of one or both of the parents becomes extremely trying and sometimes offensive. In response to that, not even a mild expression of disgust or disapproval should pass one's lips. On the contrary they should be treated with profound respect. Sayings Of Holy Prophet SAW (Ahadith) Emphasizing Respect For Parents (a) Hazrat Abu Umamah narrated that once a man asked the Holy Prophet (saw) about the rights of parents upon their children. He replied that: `The parents are the Heaven or Hell for their children.' (b) Hazrat Abdullah Bin Amr narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said: `The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of father and displeasure of Allah lies in the displeasure of father.' (c) Hazrat Abu Hurairah narrates: The Holy Prophet (saw) cursed the person three times whose old parents (both or one) were alive and he still did not earn Heaven (by serving them). (d) Once Hazrat Abdullah-Bin-Masood asked the Holy Prophet (saw) to tell him the deed liked by Almighty Allah. The Holy Prophet (saw) replied. `To offer prayers in time.' He asked him to tell the second best. He was told `to behave nicely with parents'. Rewards for Respecting Parents Holy Prophet (saw) once told a very interesting anecdote to his companions about three persons. According to him, the three persons were once traveling when heavy rains began to fall. They took shelter in a cave. Incidentally, a big stone came hurtling down and blocked the opening of the cave. All the three travelers lost the hope of their survival. One of them 17
told the rest not to lose hope and pray to Almighty Allah, by describing the most virtuous deed of their lives, for enabling them to get out of the cave. One of them addressing Almighty Allah, submitted that he had old parents and several small children. When he would come back home after grazing the goats he would first offer the milk to his old parents and then to his children. Once when he came home quite late, his parents were asleep. He milked the goats as usual and taking the cup of milk went to his old parents, but did not disturb their sleep. The whole night he stood near his parents (to give them milk whenever they get up). He prayed to Allah to enable them to come out of the cave. Allah was pleased with the act of this man and the stone moved a little. Similarly, after the other two related their tales, the stone was fully moved and they were able to come out of the cave. Nice treatment Hazrat Abu Hurairah relates that once a person came to the Holy Prophet (saw) and asked, `O Holy Messenger of Allah who is the most deserving person to get nice treatment from me?' He replied, `Your mother.' He asked, `Who next?' To this, he got the same reply. When he repeated this question for the fourth time, he was told by the Holy Prophet Your father Disrespecting or disobeying Parents Hazrat Bakr narrates that once the Holy Prophet (saw) asked that should he not warn them against three major sins? All of them said. `Certainly, O Prophet!' He then said. `To ascribe partners with Allah, to disobey parents'; getting up as he was reclining, he said `to tell a lie or to give false evidence'. He went on repeating his words for such a long time that we wished him to be silent. Praying for parents when they pass away Hazrat Abu Hurairah narrates that the Prophet (saw) said that when a person died, his period of activity was over. But there were three things which remain benefiting him even after his death. 1. Lasting act of welfare. 2. His knowledge beneficial to people. 3. His/Her righteous children who pray to Allah for his/her deliverance and forgiveness. 18
