The Sunday Readings Theme: The work of the Church must always go forward, but it is a work in which everyone must participate according to his or her state in life. Priests and those in orders have special roles, but the laity must also contribute and not just receive. First Reading (Acts 6 :1-7) Luke continues his narration of the formation of the early Church. Today he recounts the selection and ordination of the first deacons, among whom is Stephen who will become the first martyr. Second Reading (1Pt 2:4-9) This is an important reading because Peter speaks of the royal priesthood of which the laity is a part. This is not the sacramental priesthood of Jesus Christ, for which ordination is necessary; but as members of the Mystical Body all of the laity have a share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ, the cornerstone of our beliefs. Gospel: (Jn 14 :1-12) Humanity has always been puzzled by the question: What is God like? Being pure spirit and the superlative of every good thing, our finite minds can never comprehend His infinite majesty and greatness. Yet we know God and in a very simple way. Today s Gospel gives us the formula when Phillip asks this very question. Christ replies directly: Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. By knowing Christ, we know God the Father. Thought for the Day: Jesus is the way to God. He states this very clearly, Jesus reveals himself to us through His Gospels and through His people. If we love Christ, we will truly try to study and learn all we can about Him. It would be very sad if when we finally meet Him in our judgment He should say to us: I have been with you all this time and you still do not know me. Dear Father Henryk, It has been a wonderful experience celebrating Mass at Saint Coleman s Parish. Please extend my good wishes to your parishoners. You, as their good Pastor, Father Marek, Father Jerry, the Staff, and the parishoners have been most welcoming and hospitable. At every moment, I felt at home celebrating the Sunday and week-day Masses. Now, like a good snow bird I take flight home to New Jersey. Let us pray for one another. With Priestly Blessings, Fr. Monthly dedications: Each month of the calendar year has a special spiritual dedication, and May is the month dedicated to Mary. : There are three special days in May dedicated to Mary: Mother s Day on the second Sunday of May, Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, and the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on May 31. Mother s Day is primarily a secular celebration intended to honor all mothers and the importance of motherhood in the family and society, but for Catholics, it is a day to honor the greatest of all mothers, Mary, the Blessed Mother. Our Lady of Fatima recalls the appearance of Mary to three peasant children in Portugal in 1917, while the Visitation recalls Mary s encounter with Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-45). : There are many beautiful ways to venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary in May. It is common to place a statue or picture of Mary in a more prominent location in the church, school, or home, and to decorate it with flowers. It is traditional to conduct a May crowning, to weave a crown of flowers and place it on the head of a Mary statue, or to place a bouquet of flowers near an image of Mary. It is also a popular time to conduct a May or Rosary procession in which a number of people walk together in a reverent manner and recite the Rosary or sing Marian hymns. The Rosary is highly recommended, either for groups at church or families at home or in the car, or privately. There are many excellent Mary prayers in addition to the Hail Mary: the Litany of Mary, the Hail Holy Queen or Salve Regina, the Memorare, and the Angelus. Some Marian hymns can also be included at Mass. by Jayne Jaudon Ferrer
