Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish January 16, 2018 DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: It is with joy, enthusiasm, and purpose-driven mission, that I invite you to celebrate National Catholic Schools Week from January 28, 2018 through February 3, 2018. Together, we recognize the extraordinary contribution that our Catholic schools across Long Island make by forming young missionary disciples, on fire with love for our Lord Jesus and the mission of the Catholic Church. At the same time, we recognize our collective responsibility towards the future of Catholic education in our Diocese. Enrollment and investment in our Catholic schools depends on the leadership of each individual Catholic. Our willingness to witness the transformative and destiny-changing experience of Catholic education to families we meet makes all the difference. As a Diocese, we are participating in V Encuentro, a national effort begun by the US Bishops to unleash the leadership and evangelizing witness of the Hispanic/Latino community in the United States. The fruits of these efforts helps to open a gateway to a deeper engagement of our Hispanic/Latino community in the mission of Catholic Education. Pope Saint John Paul II once said: In order that the Catholic school and the Catholic teacher may truly make their irreplaceable contribution to the Church and to the world, the goal of Catholic education itself must be crystal clear. Catholic education is above all a question of communicating Christ, of helping to form Christ in the lives of others. In Catholic Schools Week 2018, our Catholic schools recommit themselves to helping parents and extended families form successful, servant leaders who help drive dramatic missionary growth on Long Island and beyond. With prayers for our shared mission and gratitude for your efforts, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

To celebrate the Epiphany, our Level 1 students followed in the footsteps of the Magi to visit the crèche in our festively decorated church. Guided by their teachers, they toured all the features and fixtures of the church. Students were instructed on the Statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima, the stained-glass windows depicting the mysteries of the rosary, the holy water font, the confessionals, the Paschal Candle, the Baptismal font, the lectern and ambo, the altar with its Last Supper bas relief, the stained-glass renderings of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Jude, St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Stations of the Cross. Additionally, the students learned about the roles of the Liturgical Ministers, such as the Altar Servers, Cantor, Choir and Musicians, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Sacristans, Ushers, and Greeters. The tour concluded with students and teachers offering prayers in front of our new Tabernacle. In commemoration of the Baptism of Our Lord, our Level 1 students reflected on their own baptism by asking their parents to share the details of that day and creating a memory page. In class, they participated in a demonstration of a baptism with the teacher serving in the role of the presider, a doll standing in for the infant being baptized, and the students acting as Godparents, Parents and congregation.

Paper Goods Ministry of Consolation Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are those that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Thank you so much to all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration. On occasion, the folks who come to us for food assistance will ask if we can provide help with paper products such as toilet paper or paper towels. Food donations, as you know, remain our first priority! However, it would be a helpful addition to the folks we serve if we could offer some assistance with paper goods. All donations are greatly appreciated! Thank you for all you to help those in need.

For info: 516-541-8056. PURCHASING HEALTH INSURANCE THROUGH HEALTHCARE.GOV? Find out which plans exclude elective abortion at www.obamacareabortion.com/newyork. In 2018, there are 12 health insurance companies offering 207 Individual plans on the New York State of Health marketplace. Of these, only the 9 plans from Fidelis Care (4% of the total) are confirmed as excluding elective abortion. While New York had 8 Multi-State Plans (MSPs) in 2017, all of which excluded elective abortion, there are no longer any MSPs offered in New York for 2018. New York currently has an abortion coverage mandate in effect. In January 2017, Governor Cuomo announced new state regulatory actions to mandate that all insurance policies that provide hospital, surgical, or medical expense coverage are required to include coverage for abortions that are medically necessary with a very narrow exemption for a subset of religious employers and qualified religious organization employers. These regulations were certified by the NY Dept of Financial Services (NYDFS) on June 5, 2017. These regulations follow a 2016 lawsuit against NYDFS brought by 13 groups including Christian churches, Catholic Charities agencies, a privately held organization and an employee of a religious organization. The complaint was in response to statewide approved health insurance model language on abortion coverage, which had the effect of forcing the groups to cover abortions unbeknownst to them. The lawsuit reads: Plaintiffs were caught unawares when upon objecting to the Model Language Abortion Mandate, they were informed that they had been separately covering abortions under the service category of medically necessary surgery. Fidelis Care, a faith-based health plan and the insurance company with the largest market share of enrollees in 2017, states on its website that it excludes abortion from plans; however, in September 2017, Centene, a Fortune 100 corporation, announced it would be acquiring Fidelis Care, with a closing date sometime in the first quarter of 2018. Centene also announced it has agreed to keep in place Fidelis Care s exclusion of abortion coverage for one year following the purchase. Plans for future years, however, have not yet been described, and Centene is not a religious employer that would qualify for the NY abortion mandate exemption.
