You have probably noticed that at the Vigil and Sunday Masses you are warmly welcomed and offered a Mass and hymn book. This is an excellent way of getting to know people in the Parish, so if you would like to join the rota, please contact Barbara or Chris. Currently, the frequency of performing this service is about every three to four weeks. It takes just a few minutes before and after Mass. Whist Drives Contact: Ann Huband (01584 873797) On the second and fourth Fridays of the month, St Peter s hosts a whist drive. Without our volunteers, this valuable community service would not be possible. The commitment is for a few hours on a Friday evening, three or four times a year, as well as a shopping trip to purchase prizes for both the whist drive and a raffle. Funding for these is provided. If you would like to join the team, please contact Ann. 1 10

Introduction Friend, You are most welcome to our Parish family, and we hope that you will feel at home with us very quickly. The purpose of this brochure is to let you know about our activities and services, and whom to contact if you wish to play an active role in one or more ways. Some of the groups are more formal in structure than others for example, the Parish Pastoral Council - but all are friendly and welcoming of new volunteers. The following list is in alphabetical order, but is not exhaustive. Additional events will be announced in the weekly newsletter, which is also available on our website at www.stpetersludlow.org We look forward to meeting you. Buildings/Ground Maintenance Contact: Chris Henry (01584 875 894) We are always pleased to add to our list of volunteers, particularly our rota for ground maintenance/mowing the grass. We currently have six members on the rota, who are on duty for a week at a time in the spring/summer/autumn. The main task is to mow the grass using our sit-on mower. If you feel able to take this on, full training will be provided. Catering (occasional events) Contact: Barbara Handy (01584 873 048) In addition to our regular Sunday morning tea/coffee rota we occasionally need willing hands to help with our events. No experience necessary, just a readiness to help out with anything from setting tables to washing up. Barbara would be delighted to add you to her list of volunteers. Local Pastoral Area or Ann Westmacott (01584 874410) The Local Parish Area (LPA3) is the grouping of 4 local parishes : St Peter s Ludlow St.Elizabeth s Cleobury Mortimer; St Milburga s Church Stretton St Walburga s Plowden For certain common pastoral purposes. For example, an annual day of recollection; annual skittles evening; annual pilgrimage, weekly exchange of newsletters. Music We do have a regular organist but If you are an organist, please do make yourself known so that you could play when the regular organist is not here. There is also an electronic option on the organ to play prerecorded accompaniments to hymns and Mass. If you are willing to join the rota of occasional volunteers to play the discs during Sunday Mass when the organist is away it would be much appreciated. We also sing the Psalms at Sunday Mass led by a cantor so if you are able to join the rota for this please let Fr. Chris know. 3 8

. Faith Development Liturgy Planning Group Charitable Fundraising Children s Liturgy Contact: Peter Shaw (01584 891540) Contact: Colette Lonergan (01584 872614) We have regular talk and discussions to help develop and enhance our understanding of our faith. These take place monthly from September to April, usually on the first Wednesday of the month. A glass of wine is provided to loosen tongues! Gift Aid Contact: Chris Henry (01584 875894) You are no doubt familiar with the system whereby if you give to the Church via this scheme, we can claim an extra 25p per pound from the Government. If you would like to take part, then Chris will be pleased to sign you up and provide a box of envelopes for the weekly collection. We meet four times a year to plan and prepare our liturgy. All are welcome to come along and contribute their thoughts. We also have a regular group who meet to choose the hymns for Sunday masses and every second Saturday Vigil Mass. If you would like to make any suggestions, please do so. Hundred Club Contact: Anneli Conroy (01584 318258) Every year we run a 100 Club to raise funds for St Peter s. We had 101 members for the calendar year 2013. There are two prizes each month of 15 and 10, with an extra 50 in June and December. Membership costs 10 for the year, and recruitment is in December/January. This is a fun way of giving a little extra with the possibility of gaining even more. We have boxes available for collecting for certain charities. If you would like one for the APF (Association for Propagation of the Faith), please contact Vera Richards (01584 874 562). For the Diocesan Children s Society / Caritas, please contact Ruth Gosling (01584 823 360). In addition, we have occasional collections/fund raisers for other charities with which our parishioners are personally involved, most notably learning4life which helps Mothers and children with HIV in Uganda. At the start of Sunday morning mass, Fr Chris invites any children present who have not yet made their First Communion to go to the Parish Lounge where they have their own catechesis and act of worship, returning at the offertory. Due to the Parish demographic, there are usually only a few participants. It is nevertheless an important Ministry and the current adult leaders would be delighted to have you join their rota. Due to the nature of the task, you will need to undergo a DBS check (at our expense). Church Cleaning Contact: Barbara Handy (01584 873048) We clean the church once a fortnight. Teams of three or four people take it in turns so that no-one is called on more than three or four times a year. If you are interested please let Barbara know so that she can include you on the rota. 7 4

Churches Together Around Ludlow (CTAL) Through CTAL, Christians from various denominations work in partnership to serve the people of Ludlow and the surrounding villages. More information is available on their website: www.ctludlow.org.uk One particular opportunity is Acts 2 where people from the various churches go into local schools to lead an act of worship with songs and drama. If you are able to help with this please contact Fr. Chris. In addition to occasional ecumenical acts of worship, CTAL is very involved in work to alleviate poverty and help anyone in need. Ludlow under Pressure is the name given to a report of a wideranging review of Ludlow s social needs commissioned by CTAL and published in November 2012. The report recommended targeting priority help to older people at risk and to young people in the 16-24 age group. It highlighted that many Ludlow people are feeling the effect of cuts to benefits and services funded by central government and the local authority following the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession, and that some are suffering real hardship. A concrete example of CTAL s work is the Food Bank which is based at the Baptist Church at the Rockspring Centre. Volunteers to staff the Food Bank are always required. The commitment usually amounts to one or two two hour sessions (1100 1300) each month, during which time they prepare any food parcels which have been requested and tidy the cupboards. If you would like to help with this, please contact Ruth Davies on 07896 706189. In addition, if you are able to add an extra tin or two to your weekly shopping, this would be most gratefully received. There is a list at the back of church of the type of items needed, along Church Flowers Contact: Jane Young (01584 877 716) There is an extra collection twice a year for donations towards the flowers at Christmas and Easter time. Volunteers to help with the Church arrangements all the year round are always welcome. Coffee/Tea after Sunday Mass Contact. Colette Lonergan (01584 872614) We gather for tea/coffee /biscuits in the Parish Lounge after Mass on Sunday. Volunteers work in pairs to provide the refreshments and to wash up afterwards. If you are willing to help, Colette will be pleased to add you to the rota.. Administration There are many opportunities to use computing skills, such as producing the newsletter as part of a team, if you are able to assist please let us know. 5 6
