Ths Summer Mr. and Mrs. Lotze' have had as ther guests Mr. Lotzer's two ssters and ther famles Mr. and Mrs. Paul Clermont and ther three chldren of Tmmns Ontaro and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Byers and ther small daughter of Camrose Alberta. Amateur rado s Mr. Lotzer's hobby and hs knowledge of ths and kndred subjects s consderable. Jeanette and Don are busy people but never too busy to do a kndness or lend a hand. ' The 1948 edton of the Va~ouver sland Outboard Assocaton's Regatta at Cordova Bay co-sponsored by the Cordova Bay Communty Club wll get under way at 1 :30 o'clock Labor Day Sept. 6. wth approxmately 20 boats of varous classes representng Seattle Vancouver and Vctora motor boat clubs takng part. Wth ex-commodore Frank Sontag (a famous speed-boat racer hmself) of the Wenatchee Yacht Club n attendance as a spectator the Regatta Commttee expects an estmated crowd of two to three thousand people and judgng by the number and qualty of compettors and contnually mprover class of boats ths year's Regatta wll undoubtedly be one of the most mportant spectacles ever seen at Cordova Bay. s out of place a fre hazard-and downrght detrmental to property values.' Graft crookedness and nhumanty seem unversally prevalent; co-operaton generosty and sympathy notorously lackng among us. Mental culture today seems generally speakng at a hgher level because educaton has become more unversal We have techncal and scentfc nventons hardly dreamed of by our ancestors. But many of these have been adopted for methods of dy.structon whch rases the queston: has man's ethcal and moral nature smlarly mproved? We have just experenced the most devastatng bloodest war of all tmes. Does ths ndcate that we are fundamentally as barbarous and bloodthrsty as some of the most prmtve cvlzatons? Can we- talk of human betterment n -the face of such questons? t s our frm convcton that humanty has mproved. Vrtually every ctzen was a professonal warror n olden tmes. Now wth few exceptons manknd hates war. Serfdom and slavery were accepted untl less than a hundred years ago. Now slavery s abhorrent to us. Glance backwards -at lvng condtons vermn-nfested prsons where prsoners often langushed wthout trals the poor were allowed to starve the aged and nfrm to de. Chld labo;' was unversal; poltcal objectors and relgous dssenters were hanged tyranny and cruelty characterzed rulng monarchs. Now hygenc measures are systematcally eradcatng flth and dsease. Lvng condtons have mproved mmeasurably. The poor and nfrm are cared for we have poltcal and relgous freedom here und n other places n the makn.g. But we cannot hurry the process of evoluton. The man pont s there s an awakenng. The world's evls were once looked upon as natural and nevtable somethng to "put up wth." Now there s a desre and a wllngness to brng about changes and we are a better stronger happer healther freer race and everyone should see that ths progress contnues so that we leave behnd us a better world than the one we entered. When he was fftyfve he took to wfe Elzabeth a courageous lttle Englsh woman who not only assumed the care of ten step-chldren but gave the paternal saac ten more. Elzabeth used to amuse the chldren by rectng lttle verses some of them datng back to the tenth century. Whle these rhymes seemed ngenuous or merely nonsenscal they had a great sgnfcance when they were composed. n those days a man could speak crtcally of anyone n authorty over hm f he were wllng to take the consequences; however the average man felt that havng hs head chopped off was mpractcal so he cloaked hs taunt or gbe n jngles and allegory. "Needles and pns needles and pns When a man marres hs troubles begns!" Those lnes were wrtten of Henry V and one of hs several wves Catherne Howard who brought pns back wth her from France. Whle Elzabeth Goose was rasng her own lttle ones her step-chldren were growng up and marryng. Her second step-daughter Anne marred a prnter from Shropshre named Thomas Fleet. Thomas dslked hs mother-n-law and never mssed a chance to rdcule her. He heard her rectng to the chldren and thought the rhymes qute absurd so he wrote them down gradually and when he had a suffcent number he prnted them callng the book "Mother Goose." But Thomas' plan to humlate hs poor mother-n-law back-fred. The lttle volume was an nstant success and Thomas astonshed and chagrned found hmself wth a best-seller on hs hands. Any day Gnomes Fares Sprtes and Elves can be seen galy trppng on ther way dong good turns for the mortals of the dstrct. These lttle people meet each week under the protecton and gudance of Brown Owl and Tawny Owl. These lttle people are part of a world-wde organzaton known as the Brownes. The group n ths area s known as the 1st Cordova Bay Browne Pack~ t was organzed June 17 1948 and sx weeks later on July 29 there were 16 grls enrolled and presented wth ther pns. Brownes are grls from 8 to 11 years ~ for the older grls the Cordova Bay Gude Company has been formed. Gudes also meet once a week and are learnng many thngs whch wr prove extremely useful both now and n later lfe. -BROWN OWL. A brthday party for Dane and Marca Wper was held recently at ther grandmother's home n Cordova Bay; Twentyfour lttle boys and grls were enchanted Jony rdes throughout the afternoon. ~.<tne and Marca and ther sster Carol are the grand-daughters of Mr. and Mrs. T. W~ hope to enter three teams from the Bay ths season; ntermedate "B" grls and boys and a junor boys' team. However there may be some htch n these plans; we wll have to wat for the league 'meetng and see what competton 's eptered for these local youngsters. -certanly hope that the other dstrcts n Saanch support ther young athletes as the organzatons and people of Cordova Bay do. We thought we had a staff expert n the person of Edgar Buckle but when we sought an explanaton he wrapped hmself n a thck slence. However everyone else had a theory and expounded t. Some stll blame the Atom Bomb for the vagares of clmate whle others hold sun spots responsble. One of our neghbors beleves that we are beng punshed for our sns. We reject the last opnon as absurd. f our nqutes had any nfluences on clmate the weather would have been consstently horrble over a long perod. When so much' has been wrtten and shouted from local platforms regardng the curbng of juvenle delnquency what better way can be devsed to keep our young people off the street durng the long Fall and Wnter evenngs than well organzed basketball and smlar sports. The problem of other Saanch dstrcts appears to be a scarcty of people who can devote tme and effort to coach and organze ther young people also the lack of organzatons such as our own Com- munty Club whch has the knack of pushng people nto these necessary postons. : Let us hope we have a successful season and see more teams n acton than ever before. Our Saanch. youngsters deserve the support of all ts resdents so they may fght for ther place on the top rungs of Brtsh Columba sports.
