Spreading A Love for God and His Glory February 19, 2017 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 1 Timothy 3:1

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS All: *CALL TO WORSHIP: 1 Chronicles 16:28-33 Leader: Attribute to the LORD, O clans of the peoples, attribute to the LORD glory and strength! All: Attribute to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. Leader: Tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, The LORD reigns! Leader: Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. *GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS - Hymn #32 Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father, There is no shadow of turning with thee: Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; As thou hast been thou for ever wilt be. Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see: All I have needed thy hand hath provided "Great is thy faithfulness," Lord unto me! Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. continued above - 2 -

*GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS, continued Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside. *HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD The splendor of the King clothed in majesty. Let all the earth rejoice, let all the earth rejoice. He wraps himself in light and darkness tries to hide and trembles at his voice, and trembles at his voice. How great is our God, sing with me. How great is our God, and all will see how great, how great is our God. Age to age he stands and time is in his hands. Beginning and the end, beginning and the end; the Godhead three in one: Father, Spirit, Son. The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb. (Bridge 2x) Name above all names, you are worthy of our praise and my heart will sing how great is our God. God Calls Us The Lord summons his people to worship and we respond in obedience. The Lord s call is a call to action. We gather, praise, adore, give thanks, etc. The Call to Worship is a joyful summons and a clear reminder that worship is our coming into God s presence by his command, and not our command that he come into our presence. - 3 - *Indicates when to stand. *PRAYER OF PRAISE *ROCK OF AGES, CLEFT FOR ME Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; Let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r. Not the labors of my hands can fulfil thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears for ever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling; Naked, come to thee for dress, helpless, look to thee for grace; Foul, I to the Fountain fly; wash me, Saviour, or I die. While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eye shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. - 4 -

COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Proverbs 7:1-3 My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. All: Merciful Father, cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from our proud thoughts and our vain desires. We often treat your word and your commandments far too lightly. We always want your promises but we hold back from walking in true and heartfelt obedience. We are quick to bind ourselves to lesser goods, and not treasure your teachings as the apple of our eye. Lord, we come to you confessing this as sin, confiding in your grace, and finding our refuge and strength through Jesus Christ your Son. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Psalm 32:1-2 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit. God Cleanses Us The biblical response to God s call to be in his presence is confessing our sins. We humble ourselves when we approach our God. This is a corporate prayer of all God s people. It is a great privilege of the gospel that we can stand forgiven before the Lord of glory. - 5 -

*HE WILL HOLD ME FAST When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast; When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast. I could never keep my hold through lifeʼs fearful path; For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast. He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast; For my Saviour loves me so, He will hold me fast. Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast; Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast. Heʼll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last; Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast. For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast; Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast. Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast ʻTill our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last! (Chorus 3x) INSTALLATION OF PASTOR TAYLOR CLARK ORDINATION & INSTALLATION OF ELDERS & DEACONS Ruling Elder Tim Anderson Ruling Elder Trent Neumann Deacon Kyle Hanson Deacon Ryan Petersen - 6 -

OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD ABOVE Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea, a great High Priest whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, My name is written on his heart; I know that while in heav'n he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart, no tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God the Just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me. Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) Behold him there! The risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless righteousness; the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace! One with himself I cannot die, my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ, my Savior and my God, with Christ, my Savior and my God. - 7 -

Sermon Series: Church Officers Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. The Gift of Church Leaders - 1 Timothy 3:1-13 (ESV) 3 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. 8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. Sermon Outline I. The Calling of Elders and Deacons - 8 -

Sermon Outline, continued II. Jesus is the Head of the Church Sermon Questions for Further Reflection 1. What is the difference between an elder and a deacon? 2. Why must an elder be thought well of by those outside the church? Why should a church leader not be a recent convert? 3. The qualifications for church leadership are also applicable to all Christians. What implications does that have on the life and behavior of all Christians? God Consecrates Us Consecrate means to make holy, to set apart. The Word of God does that for the lives of believers. Through the sermon, confessions of faith, and the offering we are sanctified for service to our Lord to joyfully offer up our lives to him. 4. How is church leadership a gift of Christ to his Church? 5. The leadership of the church does not work for you you are not our clients or our customers. We all work for Jesus. He is the head of the Church. How does this idea cut against our American consumer approach to the Church? 6. Giftedness is not the same as godliness. Why is this such an important concept to keep in mind when considering leaders in the church? What are tangible ways we can discern this difference? - 9 -

*JESUS PAID IT ALL (OH PRAISE THE ONE) I hear the Savoir say, thy strength indeed is small Child of weakness watch and pray, find in Me thine all in all Jesus paid it all; all to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow God Communes with Us The Lord strengthens and nourishes our faith through a sacramental meal. Through Jesus, communion with God has been reestablished. The covenant has been renewed. The Lord s Supper is the gospel made visible for us and we share in it as the full community of God s people. Lord now indeed I find, thy power and thine alone Can change the leper's spots, and melt the heart of stone And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete Jesus died my soul to save, my lips shall still repeat O praise the One who paid my debt And raised this life up from the dead (3x) CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

*ON JORDAN S STORMY BANKS I STAND On Jordan s stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye to Canaan s fair and happy land, where my possessions lie. All o er those wide extended plains shines one eternal day. There God, the Son forever reigns and scatters night away. I am bound, I am bound, I am bound for the Promised Land. (Repeat) No chilling winds nor poisonous breath can reach that healthful shore; sickness, sorrow, pain, and death are felt and feared no more. When shall I reach that happy place and be forever blessed? When shall I see my Father s face, and in his bosom rest? (Chorus 3x) *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service. God Commissions Us Having been richly blessed by the Lord in our worship, we are sent forth as his ambassadors of reconciliation into the world. Our worship of God as his people now extends into our lives throughout the week. We are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to him in all areas of our lives.
